What is a Lucky Pokémon? – All You Need to Know About Lucky Pokémon
If you’ve ever traded in Pokémon GO and received one back with yellow circles and a glowing background, you may be wondering what is a lucky Pokémon? This is an entirely new mechanic for GO, so trainers who have played the mainline games might not be familiar with this phenomenon. Those who do know what they are are often trying obsessively to get them into their Pokédex. Here’s what this curious new Pokémon is and how you can get them.

What is a lucky Pokémon?
Lucky Pokémon are a new type of creature only available in Pokémon GO. Not only are they cool and unique, they require half the Stardust to power up over a regular one, and have a special background (the yellow circles) when looking at them. You’ll know if a Pokémon is lucky and there’s an entire section in the Pokédex dedicated to lucky ones.
Furthermore, every trade randomizes the IVs of the Pokémon. If you trade one with IVs of 6, 9, and 8, it can go to the other player as a 10, 13, 11. However, lucky Pokémon always have good IVs. They have to be above 80%, which means a 10 across all three stats. Unfortunately, that minimum is a two-star IV, but most lucky ones end up being three stars.
This makes luckies both pretty powerful and unique. They’re not exactly easy to get, though. They cannot be caught in the wild as all wild Pokémon will not be lucky when you catch them. Fortunately, there’s a pretty easy if not guaranteed method of getting them.
How to get them in Pokémon GO
Here’s how you can get a lucky Pokémon. First, you need to enter a trade with someone. They will have to be close by, well within the 100 meter distance. Once you’ve completed the trade, you will know if you received a lucky Pokémon. If you didn’t, you will just have to try again as it is a fairly random process. To increase your chances of getting a lucky Pokémon, you can trade two ‘mons that were caught very far apart in the world and a long time apart. The further away and the further back, the better the chances of it becoming lucky.

Keep in mind that you can ordinarily only make one special trade per day. Any Pokémon that’s not registered in the Pokédex, any shiny or any Legendary Pokémon are all considered special trades. After that, you’ll have to trade other things to try and get a lucky.
There is only one way to guarantee a Pokémon turning lucky, but it is also fairly random. Once you and your friend become best friends (which entails trading, battling together or opening gifts for 90 days), there is a chance that you can then become lucky friends. This randomly happens every time you do any of the aforementioned friendship-increasing activities. If you become lucky friends, the next trade will be lucky. Otherwise, it is totally random and will require a bit of “luck”.
