What is Stab in Pokémon? – Stab in Pokémon Explained

What is Stab in Pokémon? Given that there are hundreds of moves in the franchise, it certainly sounds like an attack. There are moves like Pound, Scratch, Cut, Gust, Fly, Bind, Slam, Stomp, Thrash, Bite, Leer and so many others in the games, so Stab isn’t that far off. However, it’s not one of the moves that trainers can teach their Pokémon in any game. It’s actually an acronym. Here’s what it stands for and what it means in the Pokémon universe.

What is Stab in Pokémon? Exploring the acronym

Stab stands for Same Type Attack Bonus. It’s a part of all Pokémon games, so there is STAB, as it is referred to, in Scarlet, X, Shield, Black 2 and Arceus. All games, including Pokémon GO, have this bonus. The bonus increases the attack power of a move when it’s used by a Pokémon of the same type.

For example, in Pokémon GO, Mewtwo is a very popular battle Pokémon. If you use it and it has Psystrike as its charged attack and Confusion as its fast attack, they will both be boosted by STAB. If you use a Slaking with a Play Rough attack, then it won’t be boosted. It can still be effective, but it won’t have extra damage. If you’re curious about this Pokémon, make sure to check out our Mewtwo Pokemon GO guide.

This is applicable to all Pokémon, and every single one has a type. This bonus amplifies a move’s power by 50%. For instance, if a Fire-type Pokémon uses Ember, Ember’s base power is boosted from 40 to 60.

Furthermore, if a Pokémon has Adaptability, the boost in power is increased by 100%. So, once again, if Ember was used, its base power will change from 40 to 80. STAB does not apply to moves that do a set amount of damage, nor ones that do not use the normal damage formula, including as Dragon Rage and Seismic Toss.

Additionally, dual-types have added advantage of getting bonuses on both types. For example, Charizard would receive a boost for Fire Blast (Fire-type and Gust (Flying-type).
