The VALORANT Champions Tour has big changes for 2027

Riot Games just dropped the master plan for the 2027 VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) season, and they are essentially adopting the motto “Everything is a Tournament.” If you are a Tier 2 team grinding in the open scene, Christmas just came early. If you are a comfortable, underperforming franchised partner team, it is officially time to sweat.

The upcoming structural rework aims to create a much more intuitive and brutal competitive pathway. It opens the doors wide for open-bracket teams while introducing a mechanic that esports fans have wanted for years: actual consequences for the big dogs.

No More Free Rides for Partner Teams

The absolute headline of the 2027 update is that partner teams can now get relegated. Under the current ecosystem, getting partnered with Riot meant a guaranteed slot at the high table regardless of how badly you bombed your matches.

Starting in 2027, if a partner team fails to place near the top at regional Cups or global Masters events, they lose their fast pass. They will be forced to pack their bags and fight for survival in the Open Playoffs alongside the hungry up-and-comers.

Viewers are going to get high-stakes, dramatic tournaments out of this change. The only potential downside is the hilarious mental image of a world-class partner team having a single bad weekend, dropping down to the Open Playoffs, and absolutely obliterating a bunch of unsuspecting casual stacks who just wanted to play some competitive Valorant.

Show Me the Money

Riot is fully aware that running an esports organization on pure vibes and passion is a great way to go bankrupt. To make sure open teams can actually afford to feed their players, Riot is throwing some serious financial backing behind anyone who qualifies through the open tracks.

The fixed incentives for open teams are hitting some massive milestones:

  • Qualify for Kickoff or a Cup: $100,000
  • Qualify for Masters: $200,000
  • Qualify for Champions: $400,000

The developers explicitly stated that they wanted open teams to have a real shot, rather than just a token slot. Giving an underdog team a hundred grand just for making it into a regional Kickoff tournament is a massive win for the grass-roots scene. It also makes things incredibly lucrative for creator-led teams, who are getting extra roster continuity rules to help them keep their hard-earned circuit points.

Triple-Elimination and the Pacific Rework

The actual tournament structures are getting a heavy makeover too. The season-opening Kickoffs are returning with a brutal triple-elimination format. For the Americas, EMEA, and Pacific regions, these 12-team brawls will feature eight partner teams and four squads fresh out of the Open Qualifiers.

Meanwhile, VCT Pacific is getting completely chopped up into sub-regions to maximize local competition. The region will be split into South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and a Wild Card group covering the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and the rest of Southeast Asia. Top teams from South Asia and Oceania will also get a dedicated Last Chance Qualifier to sneak their way into the main circuit.

The 2027 season is shaping up to be an absolute bloodbath where nobody is safe. Go start practicing your aim, because the path to champions is officially open to anyone with a mouse and a dream.
