How to Get Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker in World of Warcraft
Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker is one of the few legendary items ever released in World of Warcraft. It’s an extremely fun and powerful weapon that players could obtain in the original World of Warcraft version of the game. Everyone wanted to walk around with a Thunderfury, but few ever managed to make that dream a reality.
The blade still exists today within the modern game, even though its purpose has changed. It’s no longer a weapon used for fighting, but instead it has become one of the rarest transmog appearances for 1-handed weapons.
If you’re interested in farming this sword and adding it to your collection, read on as we’ll explain in detail how to find and craft this magnificent item.

How to get Thunderfury WoW
Before you can start the quest chain to obtain Thunderfury, you must first venture into the Molten Core, one of the best WoW raids ever made, and kill the Firelord’s two lieutenants, Garr and Baron Geddon. These bosses have a very low chance to drop two Bindings of the Windseeker, Baron dropping the left half and Garr dropping the right half. Both are required in order to finish the quest and receive the real Thunderfury blade.
The Quest
Assuming you’ve already looted at least one half of the Bindings of the Windseeker, you can now begin working on your quest for Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker. Only Warriors, Paladins, Rogues, Hunters and Death Knights are eligible for this quest.
Here’s how you do it:
- To start the quest for Thunderfury, you need to bring your binding to Silithus and talk to Highlord Demitrian. You will receive an item called Vessel of Rebirth and the true grind just begins.
- You will then be required to slay Ragnaros again and collect an item called Essence of the Firelord. Luckily, this item has a 100% drop chance, so there’s no RNG involved.
- Lastly, you need to obtain 10 Enchanted Elementium Bars through a difficult and costly crafting process.
- Finally, bring the two halves, your Enchanted Elementium Bars and the Essence of the Firelord to Silithus. This time, Highlord Demitrian will summon Thunderaan himself, the original owner of the blade, after which you’ll have to defeat him and loot the blade.
The biggest obstacle in this entire process will be obtaining the two Bindings of the Windseeker. You might get unlucky and end up farming Molten Core for months, or you may get both on your first try. The rest can easily be obtained, although the bars might cost a pretty penny depending on your server prices. However, if you’re farming WoW gold regularly, you won’t have an issue here.
Enjoy Your Thunderfury Transmog Appearance
Now that you’ve acquired the legendary blade, it’s time to mix and match it with your other transmog pieces from the wardrobe. Thunderfury completely stands out with its flashy lightning effect and the sheer size. Despite being a 1-handed sword, this thing is huge!

Get the Real Deal in WoW Classic
While getting a Thunderfury on retail is still a big accomplishment, it pales in comparison to the real deal. To get the original version of Thunderfury, the Blessed Blade of the Windseeker, you will have to play on the Classic era servers and relive the original experience.
This is a much harder task as you’ll have to find an active guild and raid Molten Core on a weekly basis. Oh, and make sure you’re ready to start tanking and pick a warrior. Otherwise, your chances of getting this legendary weapon are slim at best.
If you’re not intimidated by this challenge and still wish to do it, you’ll have one hell of a time. Classic era servers are currently experiencing a massive increase in popularity and the servers are thriving. You can level a fresh character and start raiding within a month. The journey will be rough, but the reward will be that much sweeter.
