WoW Tank Tier List – Best Tanks For Raiding And M+

When it comes to World of Warcraft, the specialization that will pretty much always find you the group, no matter what class you are, is the one that can tank. There is always a need for a tank for pretty much any raid group or Mythic+.

While you will definitely find success joining these groups, there are still ways that you can guarantee your spot even better if more tanks are contesting to join. The way to do that is by playing a tank that is higher in the current WoW tank tier list.

WoW Tank Tier List For Raiding

At the time of making this tier list, the current raid is the one related to patch 10.1.5, which is Abberus, the Shadowed Crucible. While the WoW raid is quite fantastic, it is definitely challenging as well, which is why the WoW Tank Tier list plays a significant role in setting up correct raid groups. However, while the tier list is important, you should not take it to heart as the one related to Mythic+.

Raiding Tier List Discussion

What makes this raiding tier so amazing is that pretty much all classes come close to power when it comes to tanking, which is relatively rare. Every tank spec is viable even for the mythic difficulty, and it will depend only on the rest of the group which spec is better than the other.

Of course, while every spec is viable for tanking, there are some advantages that certain WoW classes have over other ones.

Paladins are great with their Auras and external cooldowns, and while they have dominated the DPS charts as tanks in the past, they are actually toned down now to other tanks in the game, which is great. Paladins have one of the most important tools for raiding, which is Blessing of Spellwarding, which negates magic damage completely in certain situations.

The second class that we put into the S-tier is the Blood Death Knight, and they are great for tanking because of all the utility that they can bring to the raid. Anti-Magic Zone, Insidious Chill, Death Grip, Anti-Magic Shell, and Death’s Advance are just some of the fantastic tools they can use during raid encounters. Most importantly, Death Strike allows them to self-sustain quite a bit, allowing healers to make more mistakes.

As for other classes, it is worth saying that they are all very viable options as they bring their own interesting kits to the boss fights, and they can deal with certain mechanics in their own way.
Brewmaster Monks have interesting tools that makes them the perfect all-arounder when it comes to tanking. The only downside to this specialization is that from all the tanks, they can have quite a lot of keybinds in their rotation, which can be both a blessing and a curse, depending on the player’s preference.

Protection Warrior does not have that much damage output, which should not really matter for tanks in raids, but they do have some nice utility. Rallying Cry is the best non-healer ability to keep the raid alive, and it is one of the tools that make this spec stand out.

Vengeance Demon Hunter is only slightly better than Guardian Druid in our opinion, as they at least have some tools that makes them unique compared to other Demon Hunters. It also helps that they are incredibly mobile, which we will, of course, mention in the Mythic+ section as well.

The only spec we are not too big fans of is the Guardian Druid, as the utility they bring to the raid can be brought by any other Druid as well, making them not so special as other tanks. However, if you enjoy playing Guardian Druid, do not let our placing of this spec in the tier list discourage you from playing it, as it is still as viable as other tank specs.

World of Warcraft Tank Tier List For Mythic+

While the raiding tier list is all that mattered in the past, ever since Mythic+ arrived, along with its e-sports side, it too is quite important in making a World of Warcraft Tank Tier list. Of course, since the groups and the encounters are completely different from each other, you can expect different specs to shine in Mythic+ compared to raiding.

S-Tier Specs Highlight

Guardian Druid

While the Guardian Druid is viable in raiding, it is a but underwhelming compared to its value in the Mythic+ scene. In Mythic Dungeons, Guardian druids are just amazing when it comes to the utility that they can bring to the party since they are probably going to be the only druid in it. Cyclone, Hibernate, Typhoon, Innervate, Rebirth, and Mass Entanglement are just some of the utility they can use to deal with trash packs or provide extra utility during boss fights, making them by far the best tanks for Mythic+ this season.

Vengeance Demon Hunter

Many would argue that the top spot for Mythic+ tanking should go to Vengeance Demon Hunters, and they could be right, as they are indeed very good. While they are in the second spot on our tier list, we agree that they are incredible when it comes to dealing with trash packs due to the sheer amount of crowd control that this spec can bring to the party.

Chaos Nova, Sighil of Silence, Sigil of Chains, Metamorphosis, Darkness, and Vengeful Retreat are all incredible tools that they can use to cc and survive in Mythic+, and the incredible mobility a Demon Hunter can have can prove extremely useful in certain fights where positioning the boss is key to a successful takedown.
