Diablo 4 is a game that boasts a massive open world in which players can explore and discover quests, monsters, and hidden treasures to progress their characters. To travel the vast distances in Diablo 4, players will need a mount.
Mounts in Diablo 4 serve as your main vehicle when traveling from point A to point B, significantly cutting down journeys and allowing you to spend more time fighting powerful monsters and collecting cool loot.

Obtaining your first mount will be a journey in itself. You’ll have to play for a solid 10-20 hours through the main campaign before being able to mount your own horse for the first time.
Diablo 4 how to get mount involves a quest that becomes available once you reach Act 4 and find Donan. You’ll be given a quest called “A Master’s Touch,” and upon completion, you will receive a follow-up quest called “Donan’s Favor” where you’ll finally get your first mount. The item is called “Reins of the Old Nell Steed” and using it will summon Old Nell, your new horse.
Once you obtain Old Nell, you’ll be able to explore the entirety of the Diablo 4 map, the way it was truly meant to be explored.
Mounts in Diablo 4 come in all shapes and sizes, but for now, they’re all horses. The Diablo 4 team have decided to keep mounts grounded in reality, but we’re sure they’ll allow us to ride demons and other terrifying creatures later in the game’s future.
Still, you have a lot of options when it comes to your mount customization. Not only can you apply different mount skins to change the entire appearance of your mount, but you can also attach different trophies and barding to it.
To customize your mount, simply visit your local Stable Master and apply all the new changes through the Stable interface. It’s that easy.

Diablo 4 is a grindy game, and the whole point of the game is to obtain more and more loot. That goes for mounts, too. The game has certain areas where specific mounts can drop. You might have received one already if you’re lucky, but otherwise you can always look up mount drop locations and farm for specific mount skins.
The other option is to simply buy your mount skins. The Diablo 4 microtransaction shop has loads of unique character and mount skins, all readily available…for a price. If you’ve got some leftover Platinum, you should consider purchasing one of these beasts and ride in style.
Mounts in Diablo 4 are rather unique as they allow you to use specific mount abilities while riding. Every time you mount on your horse, your regular skill bar will be replaced by a new mount bar where you can see all the mount abilities, and a few other interesting things.
Mounts are not invulnerable creatures and they’ll show fear when staying close to monsters for a prolonged period of time. The mount will fill up its Fear bar and dismount you once it fills up. You’ll need to keep track of this bar, otherwise you might find yourself in some tricky situations.
You can also cause your mount to gain a temporary speed boost by using Spur, which is also one of the new mount mechanics. You’re granted 3 Spur charges, so use them sparingly.
Lastly, you have the unique mount ability that’s cast upon dismounting. This will cause you to jump off your horse and execute a special attack on all nearby monsters. Different Diablo 4 classes will use different attacks. The damage of this ability is nothing special, but it is a nice touch to the Diablo 4 combat.
Diablo 4 is an open world game, a classic ARPG with MMO elements blended together. While the game follows the traditional formula for the most part, it does introduce many new concepts never seen before in previous Diablo titles. The open world of Diablo 4 is one of them.

You’re expected to play and explore the vast space of Sanctuary, which is where the mount system comes into play. You wouldn’t realistically be able to explore all of it on foot, without first losing your mind out of boredom. More importantly, you’ll often have missions and side activities in Diablo 4 you’ll want to complete each day, taking you to different corners of the world. Without a swift mount, all of these would become tedious and repetitive rather quickly.
Mounts add the necessary spice to Diablo 4 and also serve as a great way for Blizzard to monetize the game without introducing any P2W elements similar to Diablo: Immortal.
If you haven’t already reached the point in your campaign and obtained your first mount, now’s the time. Get to Act 4 as soon as possible and Old Nell will be yours. Make sure to treat your mount nicely, and keep it well fed.
