How many Diablo 4 bosses are there?
Diablo 4 launched with three unique world bosses, but more will be added in future seasons and updates. These bosses have set locations and spawn timers, allowing players to plan ahead in order not to miss any of them.
Of course, slaying these world bosses is not something that’s mandatory in order to progress the game, but if you really want to maximize your efficiency while leveling, you’ll at least try to jump in whenever a world boss has spawned.
The only world bosses we have been able to fight so far has been Ashava the Pestilent, Avarice, The Gold Cursed, and Wandering Death. Some of us got the chance to fight these during all the Diablo 4 betas and the Server Slam test, but those that didn’t will be able to do it now.
Ashava the Pestilent – Abilities and Strats
Ashava is the first world boss we encountered during the beta, and is one of the three world bosses in Diablo 4 currently. This world boss spawns in the Fractured Peaks zone, more specifically in the spot called The Crucible, and once it’s up the countdown will begin. Players zoning in will automatically join the fight and participate in taking down Ashava.
Phases
Ashava, like any other Diablo 4 world boss, will have four phases. As the players dps the boss down, the boss will transition from phase to phase, becoming increasingly more dangerous.
On top of the usual phases, world bosses will also have a Stagger bar that can be whittled down by using crowd control abilities. This provides an added strategic layer to the fight, as breaking the stagger bar can temporarily weaken the boss. No other previous Diablo game had a system similar to this, so it will be interesting to see what creative ways players will find to beat bosses quicker.
Ashava’s Abilities
There’s several key abilities you should be aware of while fighting this boss. All of them can be avoided with proper knowledge and practice, but can be absolutely deadly if you’re caught off guard.
Sweep Attacks
Ashava will frequently do a half sweep and full sweep attack. Getting caught in these will result in you dying or being on the verge of death, especially if you’re one of the more squishy Diablo 4 classes or rocking a glass cannon build.
Bite, Pound & Leap
Throughout the fight, Ashava will throw a combination of Bite and Pound attacks, with a few Leaps mixed in between. These mechanics are relatively easy to dodge, especially if you’re melee and can track her movements. However, you still must actively dodge these so don’t get too overconfident.
Poison
This is the signature ability of Ashava and one that’s probably the most annoying to deal with. Ashava will slowly fill out the area with her poison, and if you happen to step into the poisoned area, you’ll receive a ticking poison DoT. This ability on its own is not too difficult, but when you have to constantly dodge and avoid other attacks, the poison becomes a serious threat.

The Pros/Cons of World Bosses
World Bosses in Diablo 4 offer an exciting challenge, but it’s important for Blizzard to properly balance this feature, otherwise it can quickly become dead content.
One of the main reasons players will farm these bosses is obviously to obtain better gear. The best Diablo games have always revolved around farming endless experience and collecting endless loot. Everyone will beat the boss at least once to experience the new hype, but that can quickly turn into a chore if the rewards are not up to par.
Another concern about the world bosses is the fact you’re fighting them with random players who may or may not attack the boss at all. It’s no secret that a lot of players tend to be lazy during events like this, just tagging the boss once and letting others finish the job. Poor class builds, lack of dps and so much more can turn this fun activity into a 30-minute slog.
Hopefully Blizzard will take note of these concerns and implement proper measures to counteract them. It would be a real shame if the meta becomes to slay the boss once and never visit again.
General Tips for World Bosses
No matter which world boss you’re fighting, you’ll need damage. Focusing on making an efficient build will not only make you level faster, but will make world boss fights quicker for you and everyone else.
Still, it’s important not to dump all your stats into power as that can lead to you getting one shot during world boss fights. Having high health along with some damage reduction mixed in can make a huge difference. You can achieve this through active skills, gear itemization and using proper legendaries.
Lastly, learning the boss fights and figuring out the mechanics is also part of the learning process. Once you know how the fight works, you’ll be able to anticipate and dodge attacks more easily. Player skill will ultimately be the determining factor here.
Above all else, make sure you’re having fun! If you’re not enjoying the world boss fight, leave and try later. Go and level some more, do side activities or progress the main story line. The bosses spawn all the time on the Diablo 4 map, so you’ll never really miss out on anything by skipping one from time to time.
