CDL Drama Strikes Major IV As Teams Start Dropping

It’s the final CDL Major of the season, taking place behind closed doors in Burbank. Now that the tournament has started heating up, the drama is kicking off in earnest, and teams are beginning to fall out of the running. In the last day, we’ve seen the Royal Ravens, Boston Breach, Minnesota Rokkr, Vegas Legion and OpTic Texas all crash out of the Major, with only Legion walking away with a small cash prize.

It has been a devastating blow for some teams – OpTic Texas underwent a miserable qualifying stage just to get kicked out at the first opportunity by the Miami Heretics. Boston Breach, which set the record for the longest losing streak this season, failed to win a single map before being eliminated from the tournament, marking a firm end to the organisation’s competitive season. There’s plenty of length left in the competition, but the teams are dropping like flies.

The Final Post

This is the last Major before COD Champs, which means it’s arguably the most important Major of the year. This is where teams can escape the ‘relegation zone’ and land a superior seed for Champs. However, given how teams are falling out of the running, it seems unlikely that anything considerable will change in the overall standings moving into Champs.

Last night, the drama kicked off as Toronto Ultra eliminated the Carolina Royal Ravens without the latter team winning a single map. This caused sparks to fly, and the loudmouthed competitor, Thomas ‘Scrap’ Ernst took his brashness to the door of long-time veteran, James ‘Clayster’ Eubanks. For the longest time, Scrap has been carving out an identity as the villain of the CDL, and despite it landing him a lot of flak online, he still goes after these seasoned players.

To that end, Scrap stood up following his win over the Royal Ravens and suggested that Clay ‘go back to the desk’ and mentioned that he should retire. At thirty-two, Clayster is the oldest competitor in the CDL and is in the midst of his thirteenth competitive season. By way of a response, Clayster referred Scrap to his crushing loss at last year’s COD Champs, but the shocker came when live on stage in Burbank, Clay refused Scrap’s fist bump and said, ‘kill yourself, dude.’

Running Thin

It has been a long season for some and the tanks are running on empty for others. Later today, we’ve got a slew of matches that are sure to entertain fans worldwide, but we’ll see many more upsets before this Major tournament is over. Here’s what’s coming today in the CDL:

  • LA Guerrillas vs. LA Thieves
  • Atlanta FaZe vs. Seattle Surge
  • Toronto Ultra vs. Miami Heretics

Presently, the power rankings haven’t changed. The favourite to win the tournament is still Atlanta FaZe, but it’s razor-thin between that team and Toronto Ultra, with the New York Subliners bringing up third place. Both NYSL and Ultra have to go through the loser’s bracket to get to the Grand Final, but NYSL has started on a forward foot and beaten Minnesota and Vegas, while Ultra has only managed to beat down the Royal Ravens thus far.

We can expect more drama to unfold as the weekend goes on – and then COD Champs will explode.
