Batrider Dota 2 Guide – Lasso your enemies in patch 7.14
Batrider is a very strong offlaner who has lots of kill potential in lane and who offers his team a powerful disable in the mid and late game.
Sticky Napalm is a very unique spell in that it slows the enemies’ turn rate considerably which allows Batrider and his allies to kite enemies very easily. Firefly is a very strong escape ability as it will deal a lot of damage to pursuers. It can be used very effectively to farm neutral camps in the jungle, as Batrider can easily move between camps with it through the unobstructed movement and long duration of the spell.
Movement speed and mobility items are key on Batrider as they allow him to travel farther distances with a Lassoed enemy which is particularly important in the late game.

Complete Batrider Spell guide
Sticky Napalm
Batrider covers all enemies in the area in sticky napalm. Each stack of the napalm slows enemy movement speed and increases all damage they take from Batrider in addition to slowing turn rate by a flat 70%. The damage is halved against creeps and also provides flying vision of the area. Each cast refreshes the duration of all stacks. This spell is usually maxed first for several reasons. Firstly, it increases the damage that enemies take from all of your spells and attacks and this gives you a lot more kill potential. Secondly, the slow makes it much easier to chase down and kite enemies.
While laning, try to keep at least one stack on enemies at all times, as it makes it very hard for enemies to contest you. It makes trading hits much more effective as you will deal more damage and you can use it to last hit more effectively. If enemies let the stacks build up, then it can be very hard for them to escape due to slow turn and movement speed and you can simply chase them down with Firefly. Keep an eye on how many magic stick/wand charges they have as they may be able to turn around and kill you if you don’t take into account the healing.
Flamebreak
Batrider throws a Molotov which deals damage over time and knockback all enemies in the area of effect. This is usually maxed lastly because the damage per level from Firefly and Sticky Napalm is greater. Flamebreak does not disable enemies, which means it won’t cancel channeled abilities. It can be used to push enemies over impassable terrain which allows you to escape ganks by pushing them over cliffs. It’s usually worth getting one value-point in the spell early for the extra damage boost and knockback. The damage isn’t much at level 1, but it can deal a lot of damage when stacked with Sticky Napalm.
Firefly
Batrider flies above all enemies and drops fire below him which scorches the ground and deals damage over time. While active, he gains flying vision and will destroy any trees he flies over. This spell is usually maxed secondly after getting 2 points in it. This is because the damage difference between level 1 and 2 of the spell is quite large but after that it’s usually more effective to max Sticky Napalm.
You can fly over impassable terrain with this spell and can easily escape from enemies by flying into trees. You can Firefly into a forest and create your own escape path. If the enemies choose to follow you, they will have to follow through the fire and you will be able to keep building up Sticky Napalm stacks. If they chase for long enough and over-commit, you can often turn the gank around as they won’t be able to escape.
You can also use this spell to effectively farm the jungle and stacked neutral camps. It can also be used to defend towers by scorching the ground before they reach the towers, but the long cooldown may prevent you from being able to use it if a fight breaks out. Only do so if you don’t expect to take a fight at the tower and just want to slow the enemy team down. Note that you will fly over Techies’ Proximity Mines while the spell is active.

@ Valve
Flaming Lasso
Batrider lassos an enemy target which he can drag behind him but which also disarms Batrider. The lassoed enemy cannot move or cast spells, but if Batrider teleports or Blinks, the lasso is broken. This disable pierces magic immunity but is also broken through Dismember or Walrus Kick. Aghanim’s Scepter makes Flaming Lasso deal damage over time and also lassos a random enemy hero within 400 units of the primary target.
Flaming Lasso is an incredibly strong spell as it allows you to effectively relocate even the hardest Dota 2 heroes. The distance you can travel is directly affected by your movement speed and you can also use Force Staff to travel farther. Use Firefly immediately before Flaming Lasso to deal damage over time to the target and to possibly drag them through trees. The flying vision from Firefly will also make it easier to scout out enemies for you to Blink onto with a Blink Dagger.
Talents
Level 10: +5 Armor or +6% Spell Amplification
The extra armor is usually a bit stronger here because it helps to tank you up which is generally more important than dealing a bit more damage. The spell amplification can be good if you aren’t facing much physical damage.
Level 15: +300 Health or +2s Flamebreak Burn Duration
The additional 300 health is almost always a stronger talent choice here because it helps you to stay alive for a lot longer. If you are in low risk of getting killed during team-fights, then the extra Flamebreak burn duration can potentially be a big increase to your DPS. At max level and without any stacks of Sticky Napalm active, it will deal 80 damage more to each enemy in its range.
Level 20: +50 Movement Speed or 15% Cooldown Reduction
Both of these talents are very valuable for Batrider and you should choose whichever you feel you need more. The extra movement speed allows you to drag enemies farther during Flaming Lasso and makes it easier for you to chase and escape from enemies during Firefly. This can be very strong against heroes that you need to kite or enemies who have high movement speed and can be hard to lockdown. The cooldown reduction is also very strong on Batrider because it allows him to cast all of his spells a bit sooner. Batrider also tends to get a lot of active items such as Blink Dagger, Force Staff, Black King Bar and Shiva’s Guard and the CDR will allow you to use all of these more often as well.
Level 25: -13s Flamebreak Cooldown or +8s Firefly Duration
The increased Firefly duration is usually a stronger choice here because it’s one of Batrider’s strongest spells. It normally has a 22 second downtime which gets reduced to only 14. The longer duration is strong for a number of reasons. It will allow you to fight at your strongest more often and for longer, will give you more mobility and vision from the flying movement, and allow you a larger window with which to use your Lasso effectively. In most cases, this is the stronger talent because it helps you to fight more effectively in the late game.
The reduced Flamebreak cooldown gives the spell a 4 second cooldown. The damage over time is far greater than the cooldown, especially with the level 15 talent and the damage will stack when used multiple times. This talent can be good if you need to kite enemies more often, as the knockback can be very useful. The damage over time can be helpful if you are struggling to get close with Firefly or to at all utilize it effectively.
What Items to build on Batrider
Starting Items
- Wind Lace
- Tango
- Healing Salve
- Iron Branch
- Clarity
Batrider’s starting items should provide him with enough regeneration for his whatever he may face in the offlane. A Wind Lace is a common pickup because it helps him to escape from enemies with Firefly and also to chase them down if he gains enough stacks with Sticky Napalm. The extra movement speed can also help him to kite his enemies, since the turn rate slow will make it harder for enemies to catch him if he tries to juke.
Early Game Items
Tranquil Boots
Tranquil Boots are almost always the best boots to buy on Batrider. This is because they provide a lot of movement speed to help you get kills, HP regen to keep you active and roaming for kills on the map and are relatively cheap, which allows you to get a faster Blink Dagger or Drum of Endurance up.
Bottle
A Bottle can be a good item if you are taking a lot of damage in your lane. You can usually control the runes quite easily, since Firefly and Sticky Napalm can make it a lot harder for your enemies to contest you. The extra mana regeneration is also very nice and allows you to use Sticky Napalm a lot more freely. Lastly, having a bottle can be great because at all stages in the game you have the possibility of bottling a Haste rune, which is invaluable for the hero.
Drum of Endurance
A Drum of Endurance is a strong early-to-mid game item on Batrider because it provides him with an active which greatly increases his and his allies’ movement speed which works well with Flaming Lasso. The extra stats are very helpful, and the item itself will give your team another edge when taking fights in the earlier stages of the game. This is important because when you have Flaming Lasso off cooldown, you should be looking to take fights or gank enemies.
Blink Dagger
A Blink Dagger is the first core item that you should farm on Batrider. It’s so important because Flaming Lasso has such a short cast range, and the ability to blink on top of enemies makes it so much more easier to initiate good fights, gank enemies and to catch enemies out of position.
Magic Wand
A Magic Wand can be good in the early game if you are against heroes who use a lot of spells or if the early game is likely to be very active. Sometimes it’s not needed since you many not take many fights until you get your Drum of Endurance or Blink Dagger, and it’s an additional cost which will delay these items.

Mid Game Items
Force Staff
Force Staff should, in most cases, be the 2nd core item you get on Batrider. This is because it’s a very strong mobility item which helps you to drag enemies even farther away through Flaming Lasso. It can be very dangerous to Blink on top of an enemy in order to attempt to Lasso them, and whether you succeed or not, the item will help you get to safety.
Boots of Travel
Boots of Travel are strong on Batrider because they increase his movement speed which allows him to drag enemies farther with Flaming Lasso. It’s an effective item on him, because he doesn’t really need any other items.
Black King Bar
A Black King Bar is needed in almost every game because it’s quite easy for enemies to prevent Batrider from using Flaming Lasso effectively. This is because the spell relies on him blinking on top of the enemy and to drag them far away. Stuns, slows and other disables can easily stop him from doing this.
Eul’s Scepter of Divinity
A Eul’s Scepter offers more mobility for Batrider, lots of mana regeneration and a strong utility spell. The mana regen is great on him, as he tends to cast a lot of spells and the active can be used both defensively and offensively.
Late Game Items
Octarine Core
Octarine core will tank you up a lot, but more importantly reduce the cooldowns on all of your spells and items and give you spell lifesteal. This is strong because Batrider tends to buy lots of active items such as Black King Bar and Scythe of Vyse. The spell lifesteal can be very strong because Firefly can potentially deal a lot of damage to enemies when stacked with Sticky Napalm which can translate into a lot of healing.
Scythe of Vyse
Scythe of Vyse provides Batrider with a lot of man regeneration, intelligence and a very strong disable. The Hex stacks very well with Flaming Lasso and allows you to keep an enemy disabled for a very long time.
Shiva’s Guard
A Shiva’s Guard provides Batrider with a lot of armor and a strong attack speed slow aura. This item can be very strong against lineups with lots of physical damage dealers. The active slow can also be very strong if your team lacks many forms of disables or if you need to deal with summons or illusions. The slow will also keep enemies in the damaging effects of Firefly for longer.

@ Gamers Decide
Situational Items
Ghost Scepter
A Ghost Scepter can be used to keep you alive against lineups with lots of physical damage. There are generally better items that you can get, but if you are being burst down very quickly be enemies, then the extra survivability can go a long way in keeping you alive.
Aghanim’s Scepter
An Aghanim’s Scepter is quite a unique pickup on Batrider because the utility it offers is very situational. The damage over time it provides is always helpful, but the ability to drag another target can be less helpful against creep heroes and illusion heroes, as it can potentially drag these as well. Despite this, it can be a good item because it makes the spell more efficient and it always has the possibility of dragging a secondary hero.
Gem of True Sight
Batrider can be a very strong gem carrier and often relies on having one because heroes with invisibility can be hard to use Flaming Lasso on effectively. Enemies can also buy Shadow Blade or Glimmer Cape which may make it harder to locate them when you attempt to initiate a fight or a gank. Also a great tool for cleaning up enemy Dota 2 wards.
Lotus Orb
A Lotus Orb provides a lot of armor and a powerful defensive spell which can be used to purge yourself of negative debuffs. It can be particularly strong on Batrider against lineups with lots of single-target disables, as they will disable themselves when trying to save whoever you choose to Lasso. However, in most cases a BKB is simply a better item to get.
Aeon Disk
An Aeon Disk is a very situational item which can be good if you are being quickly burst down in team-fights and unable to get your Flaming Lasso off effectively because of it.
Meteor Hammer
A Meteor Hammer can be a strong item on Batrider. The stun can usually be landed quite easily, as the duration of Flaming Lasso is the same as the channel and landing time of the Meteor Hammer. The damage over time from Meteor Hammer can be amplified with Sticky Napalm as well, which makes it a very effective item on Batrider. If you need more control in team-fights or if your lineup lacks many disables, it can be a very good item.
Aether Lens
An Aether Lens can be good because most notably it increases the cast range of Flaming Lasso. This can be good if you are struggling to lockdown fast enemies or heroes that are hard to lockdown overall as it will effectively extend your reach.
Shadow Blade
Shadow Blade can be used during Flaming Lasso in order to make you move faster and to make it harder for the enemy team to damage or disable you. You can also use it after Firefly in order to catch enemies out who might otherwise be expecting you.

Interesting Batrider Match-ups
Fast heroes
Batrider can be a very strong enemy hero against fast enemies, as his Flaming Lasso can drag enemies in the opposite direction to their escape route.
Ranged carries
Ranged carries such as Drow Ranger and Sniper rely on good positioning in team-fights and Batrider can potentially pull them right into the middle of your team.
Disruptor
Disruptor is very strong against Batrider for several reasons. His Glimpse can pull you back and releases enemies from the grasp of Flaming Lasso. Kinetic Field and Static Storm are also great counter-spells to your initiation.
Vengeful Spirit
Vengeful Spirit’s ultimate can be used on either you or the Lassoed target to cancel the spell. The range of this spell can make it very hard for you to initiate onto the enemy, and there aren’t many items you can get to prevent it either. Be very careful about when and how you use Flaming Lasso.
Abaddon
Abaddon can use his ultimate to cancel the disable from Flaming Lasso and he can use Aphotic Shield on his allies to purge them from the spell as well.
Shadow Demon
Shadow Demon’s disruption can be used on the target which you use Flaming Lasso on. Although it won’t cancel the Lasso, it will protect the target from a large amount of damage which your team could deal.
Oracle
Oracle can use his ultimate ability on the Flaming Lassoed target in order to keep them alive for a lot longer and potentially save them.
Slark
Slark can purge himself of the Flaming Lasso as well as any stacks of Sticky Napalm through Dark Pact, making him very hard to kill at all stages of the game.
