Centaur Warrunner Dota 2 Guide – Initiate Fights like a Boss in 7.15
Centaur Warrunner is a tanky offlaner who excels as a team-fight initiator. He has the highest strength gain of any hero, and as such has a very large health pool throughout the game. This is offset by relatively low armor, however.
His skill-set allow him to close the gap against enemy heroes very easily and to disable and deal damage once close. Return is a very unique spell which deals return damage to any enemies which attack him, based on his strength value. This makes it very effective to buy items which increase your strength, such as Heart of Tarrasque.
His ultimate affects everyone on the team, effectively giving the hero a global presence which is very impactful in both aggressive and defensive situations.

Complete Centaur Warrunner Spell guide
Hoof Stomp
Centaur slams the ground with his hoof, stunning and dealing damage to all nearby enemies. This spell is usually maxed secondly after getting one level in it early to keep you alive against melee heroes. This is because it is better to have more levels in the damage and stun earlier than Return, which scales with your strength. It is most often gotten at level one, as it can be used to stun melee enemies. However, if you are playing mostly against ranged heroes, you may find more value in getting Return at level one. The spell has quite a long cast animation, so you can try to fake-out the cast animation to zone pursuing enemies away from you. If you use it to try to catch enemies, try to get as close to them as you can before casting it, as they may have time to move away.
Double Edge
Centaur cuts into the enemy target, dealing damage to all enemies in a small area around the target as well as dealing half damage to himself. This damage is never lethal, which means you cannot deny yourself with it and is dealt as magic damage, which means it is reduced by Hood of Defiance. This spell is maxed first as it provides a large amount of kill potential in the early game. At max level it can deal 400 magical damage, which is a massive amount, especially against squishy support heroes. You can use this spell to push out creep-waves and clear jungle camps in the mid and late game and harass enemies with it in the early game if you have Tranquil Boots.

Return
Centaur Warrunner returns some of the damage dealt to him from attacks based on his strength value. The damage is dealt upon the attack reaching Centaur. This spell is usually maxed lastly after getting one point early to help you trade hits with the enemies more effectively. This spell is very strong given Centaur’s high strength gain and it’s the reason that getting multiple Heart of Tarrasque on Centaur can be good. Stacking Hearts along with this passive will make Centaur one of the hardest Dota 2 heroes to take down.
Stampede
Centaur Warrunner leads a charge, giving all allied heroes and any units under their control hasted movement speed. In addition, any enemies who are run into are slowed and take damage based on Centaur’s strength. Aghanim’s Scepter provides 40% damage reduction to all of his allies and allows them to run through impassable terrain. The damage can only be applied once, regardless of how many heroes run through an enemy. The best ways to use the spell is either at the begging or end of a team-fight, as it helps your allies to initiate more easily or escape if it’s a bad fight. It’s a very powerful spell in the early game as it can be used to save your cores or help your team to catch important enemy heroes. In addition, it does not have a particularly long cooldown.
What Talents should you pick on Centaur Warrunner
Level 10: 10% Evasion or +10% Magic Resistance
The talent choice at level 10 depends almost entirely on what damage types the enemy team mostly has. If you’re playing against almost entirely physical damage, then the evasion is usually more helpful than the magic resistance. In general however, the magic resistance is more preferred as it’s generally more effective in tanking you up in the early and mid game.
Level 15: +75 Damage or +15% Return Strength Damage
The extra Return Strength Damage is almost always the better option. It’s very significant as Centaur has very high strength gain and tanks a lot of damage in team-fights. The extra damage can be good if you are playing a lot of squishy heroes who have low armor.
Level 20: +300 Double Edge Damage or +20 Strength
The extra strength is almost always a better option as it helps you to tank more damage in team-fights. The strength also translates to more return damage from the passive and Stampede. On the other hand, the extra double edge damage can be good if you are playing against a lot of squishy heroes or if you are able to use Double Edge against several enemies effectively. For example, if you have heroes such as Dark Seer, Magnus or Enigma, it may be good as you will be able to damage several heroes at once.
Level 25: Gains Return Aura or +1.5s Hoof Stomp Duration
At level 25, it’s usually better to get the Return aura. This is because in the late game, you usually have a very large amount of strength, especially if you have a Heart of Tarrasque. This means you will return a lot of damage to attacking enemies. Overall, it’s a very strong talent as it provides your team with a large increase to your team’s damage output. It has a 900 range aura, so try to stand near the allies you want to keep alive in team-fights or who are being focused. The extra Hoof Stomp duration can be good if you need more control on your team. It increases the stun duration to a total of 4.25 seconds which is quite a long duration for a 13 second cooldown AoE stun.
The best Items for Centaur Warrunner
Starting Items
- Stout Shield
- Tango
- Healing Salve
- Enchanted Mango
- Iron Branch
Centaur Warrunner requires a Stout Shield and lots of regeneration for the offlane. Having more than one Enchanted Mango can be good as it ensures you never run out of mana for Hoof Stomp or Stampede. Both of these spells do a very good job at keeping you and your allies alive and can be the gap-closer you or your allies need to get kills.
Early Game Items
Tranquil Boots
Tranquil Boots are the boots of choice for Centaur Warrunner because they provide a lot of health regen to make up for the health cost of Double Edge. It allows you to farm jungle or neutral creeps faster as you can use the spell more often. It also helps a tanky hero like Centaur heal up his large health pool in between fights. This can help with sustain early on if you don’t have of the best hard supports in Dota 2 at your side.
Magic Wand
A Magic Wand can be a great early to mid game item on Centaur if you’re playing against lots of spell-casters. It should be gotten in almost every game, and if not, you should probably leave it as a Magic Stick.
Blink Dagger
A Blink Dagger should be the first major item you get in most games after perhaps a defensive item such as Hood of Defiance or Vanguard. This is because it makes it much easier to land Hoof Stomp as a means of team-fight or gank initiation.
Hood of Defiance
A Hood of Defiance is a great item to get in the early game if you’re playing against lots of magical damage. It’s especially strong on Centaur because it reduces the self-damage from Double Edge, making it more efficient to use.
Vanguard
A Vanguard is a great item to get in the early game if you are playing against lots of physical damage. If you’re able to farm the lane effectively, it can be very good to get the spell early as it will tank you up a lot against creeps, towers and heroes in the early game.

Mid Game Items
Pipe of Insight
Pipe of Insight allows you to block a large amount of magical damage and further increases your magic resistance. This allows you to use Double Edge without losing any health and makes you even tankier.
Blade Mail
A Blade Mail is a great item against heroes who can deal a large amount of burst damage, particularly if it’s physical. It makes it much easier for you to act as the front-lines of your team without dying as quickly. It doesn’t have much synergy with Return however, as the passive only works when you are getting attacked, and enemies will avoid attacking you while Blade Mail is active.
Crimson Guard
A Crimson Guard can be a great item if you’re playing against lots of physical damage dealers, as it can be used to tank up your allies considerably. It can also be strong against pushing lineups, as the active is applied to buildings as well.

Late Game Items
Aghanim’s Scepter
An Aghanim’s Scepter can be an incredibly strong item on Centaur, as it reduces the incoming damage of allies by 40% for 4 seconds. This can be incredibly strong against heroes such as Faceless Void or any heroes who can burst your allies down quickly. It provides a bit of strength as well which makes Return deal a bit more damage to attackers.
Heart of Tarrasque
A Heart of Tarrasque is an incredibly strong late game item on Centaur Warrunner because of the sheer amount of strength it grants you and the large amount of health regeneration. The strength adds more damage to both Return and Stampede, and if you have the Return aura, you will deal a large amount of damage to attacking enemies. You can get more than one Heart if you don’t need any other item.
Shiva’s Guard
A Shiva’s Guard can be a great item in the late game if you are playing against lots of physical damage. The armor and attack speed slow will tank you up a lot, especially since you have a very large health pool, as this increases your effective hit points even more. The active slow and nuke can be used to clear illusions or creeps and helps to chase down and control enemies even more. This is usually not a problem with Stampede, but it can be a nice follow up to Hoof Stomp.
Assault Cuirass
An Assault Cuirass is a great item to get if you’re facing lots of physical damage dealers. The extra attack speed, armor and minus armor aura are great when you also have lots of physical damage dealers on your team. The armor will help your teammates a lot and the minus armor aura will also allow your right-clicks to deal more damage. Centaur has surprisingly strong attack damage since he has such high strength gain, which makes Assault Cuirass a great item to transition you into a more of a semi-carry role.
Situational Items
Lotus Orb
A Lotus Orb provides you with lots of regen and armor as well as a strong defensive ability. It’s a great item to get when you’re facing lots of debuffs and/or single target spells. This allows you to front-line even more effectively, and makes enemies less likely to use their spells on you, allowing you freer movement across the battlefield.
Heaven’s Halberd
A Heaven’s Halberd can be a great item to get in the mid game if you need to deal with any strong physical damage dealers who can deal a lot of burst damage. It provides a lot of strength and evasion, both of which are very valuable for Centaur, and the active is very powerful against many heroes.
Force Staff
A Force Staff can be a good item if you are playing against heroes such as Clockwerk or Tusk, as they can prevent you from moving around the battlefield effectively. It can also be good in situations where it may be dangerous for you to stay on the front lines, for example if the enemies have heroes who can kill you quite easily. In these cases, having a Force Staff will allow you to Blink into a fight and use Hoof Stomp and immediately Force yourself back out of danger. Overall it’s a very situational item, but it may be helpful in some matches, especially in situations where you’re caught off guard by enemy Dota 2 wards and need a quick escape.
Black King Bar
A Black King Bar can be a great item if you are playing against a large amount of magical damage or more importantly, a large amount of disables. Generally, a Pipe of Insight will be enough to deal with most damage, especially since you have a very large health pool. However it may be very helpful to deal with disables, as these can make it hard for you to move around or use your spells effectively and some enemies such as Invoker or Skywrath Mage may still be able to cause you a lot of trouble.
Radiance
A Radiance can be a great item on Centaur. The hero stays on the front-lines of his team a lot and is very hard to bring down. He usually stays alive for most of the fight, and as such may be able to deal a large amount of damage over time with the item. It can be good if you need a bit more damage on your team, or if you’re playing against a lot of heroes with Blink Daggers, or if you don’t really need to get items which tank you up further. The extra right-click damage also allows you to deal a surprising amount of physical damage to enemies, especially given your high strength gain.

Interesting Match-ups for Centaur Warrunner
Lifestealer
Lifestealer’s passive heals him for every attack based on how much strength the enemy has. This naturally makes him a very strong hero against Centaur Warrunner, who has the highest strength gain in the game. There are many items you can get to tank up against him, but in general, the hero will always be able to deal a lot of damage to you, and won’t particularly be put off by Return. In addition, it makes buying Strength items even more double edged, as it makes Return and Stampede deal more damage but also allows Lifestealer to heal more and deal more damage to you.
Ursa
Ursa is quite good at dealing with Centaur because after using Stampede to initiate, you generally lack mobility. This means that Ursa can get on top of you and easily build up lots of stack of Fury Swipes, and since the hero usually buys both lifesteal and some form of lockdown, he doesn’t really care about taking Return damage, since he will be able to heal up for quite a lot of the damage he deals.
Timbersaw
Timbersaw deals a lot of pure damage with his spells which is quite strong against a tanky hero such as Centaur. He can also reduce your primary stat by 15% which is very significant, since you have a massive amount of strength gain per level. This makes you a lot less tankier than you would be otherwise, which makes him a strong counter to you.
Breaks
Breaks from any source such as Silver Edge or a number of spells are quite strong against Centaur, as they prevent Return from working. This makes it much less scary for enemies to attack you, which in effect makes you a lot less tanky and more kite-able. Squishy carries are much less likely to avoid hitting you if they don’t take lots of damage in doing so, which can make Breaks very strong against Centaur if they have relatively squishy carries.
