Doom Dota 2 Guide – The Enemy is Doomed to Fail in Patch 7.14

Doom is a tanky off laner who has one of the strongest single target spells in the game. He can farm a lot of gold very quickly through Doom and has a lot of mid game team-fight potential through Scorched Earth, Infernal Blade and any spell from a neutral creep.

The ability to adapt to the game and choose a spell that suits your needs the most is very helpful for his team. You can alter his skill build either to allow him to farm more or be more aggressive in the mid game – Infernal Blade and Devour can be swapped depending on the needs of your team. However, he is very vulnerable to physical damage as he has low armor and very low agility gain.

Complete Doom Spell guide

Devour

Doom destroys the target creep, gaining whatever abilities it has and gaining bonus gold after a short duration. Upon using Devour, you gain the full gold and experience of the consumed creep immediately and the bonus gold later. You can max Devour either secondly or lastly depending on the role that Doom needs to fulfill in the match. If you are playing a semi-carry position, you should max Devour secondly to get the extra GPM boost. Jungle creeps give different abilities and you should Devour creeps that give you spells and passives which benefit you in your current situation. For example, in the early game, the HP regen from the Satyr Tormenter is helpful in many situations. On the other hand, the advantage from the Alpha Wolf in the late game will increase your and your teams DPS.

Scorched Earth

Doom gains increased movement speed and HP regen whilst burning all enemies in close proximity. You should max Scorched Earth first because of the utility it provides you in the early and mid game. Scorched Earth has a very long cooldown, so be mindful about when you use it in team-fights and when laning. You can use it to escape enemies when you’re low on HP or to chase enemies through the extra movement speed and burn aura it provides. It will cause trouble for even the best Dota 2 players that lane against you.

Infernal Blade

Doom strikes the target, burning them for a percentage of their maximum HP and mini stunning the target. You should max Infernal Blade secondly if you need to fight in the mid game more than farm. At level 4, it will burn 20 % of the enemy’s HP with a 4 second cooldown which is very strong in the early and mid game.

Doom

Doom curses the target, dealing damage over time, silencing and preventing the target from using items. Aghanim’s Scepter extends the duration of Doom as long as Doom is near the Doomed target, applies a Break and removes positive buffs. The target of this spell varies constantly on the fight itself and the heroes on the enemy team. Generally, prioritize any core casters such as many mid heroes. After this, prioritize other cores or heroes that are preventing your allies to accomplish their goals.

What Talents to pick on Doom

Level 10: +10 Scorched Earth Damage/Heal or +16% Scorched Earth Movement Speed

In almost every game, the extra damage and heal is a better choice. At almost all levels, it’s roughly an extra 150 HP/damage which is very significant. The only time the extra movement will be more worthwhile is if you need to catch heroes that are very hard to lock down or if you’re facing lots of slows then it will help you to escape.

Level 15: +150 Devour Bonus Gold or +20% Evasion

The extra bonus gold more than doubles the amount of gold you get from each Devour at level 4. This is a massive boost to your GPM and should never be overlooked. With the extra Devour gold, you can buy an item that can give you evasion. Overall, there is almost no situation where you would rather choose the evasion over the gold. It can be only be a better choice if you are almost unkillable as it is and are facing lots of physical damage and intend to end the game in the early or mid game, then it can be a justifiable choice.

Level 20: Devour Targets Ancients or +40 Doom DPS

Both of these talent choices are fairly situational. If you are likely to kill the Doomed target with the extra 640 damage, then the DPS may be worth it, especially if you have an Aghanim’s Scepter or Refresher Orb. Otherwise, the ability to Devour ancient creeps will give you a large power spike in the late game.

Level 25: +100% Cleave or +3% Infernal Blade Damage

The extra Infernal blade damage is good if you are facing lots of tanky heroes with high HP, as the percentage will translate well into damage. The Cleave is a bit more underwhelming, as most of your damage comes from Doom and Infernal Blade, which doesn’t cleave. If you have lots of damage/attack speed items it can be a decent choice, as you will be able to deal with things like illusion and creep heroes more easily.

What Items to build on Doom

Starting Items

  • Boots of Speed
  • Wind Lace
  • Stout Shield
  • Clarity
  • Iron Branch
  • Tango
  • Healing Salve

Doom is usually played in the off lane as he can rotate between his lane and the jungle very well. You will need a Stout Shield in almost every game to block physical damage and trade more hits. If you are threatened in your lane by strong supports, then Boots of Speed or a Wind Lace will let you move between the jungle and lane more easily and escape kill attempts on you more easily.

Early Game Items

Orb of Venom

If you’re in a lane where you are able to harass enemies with Infernal Blade, then an Orb of Venom will let you chase enemies down more easily.

Tranquil Boots

Tranquil Boots are a good choice if you are facing lots of harass from your lane. They also let you jungle more easily.

Phase Boots

Phase Boots are usually the boots of choice on Doom as they increase his movement speed which allows him to chase enemies more easily and grants him more right-click damage.

Drum of Endurance

A Drum of Endurance gives you some more movement speed and some early game stats. This gives you even more early game team-fighting potential

Mid Game Items

Blink Dagger

Doom requires some form of initiation and gap-closing. A Blink Dagger allows him to blink on top of enemies and immediately Doom them, preventing heroes that would otherwise be hard to lockdown to escape in many situations.

Shadow Blade

A Shadow Blade is another great initiation item on Doom. It is preferred in situations where a Blink Dagger won’t be as useful as a potential Silver Edge, for example if they have strong passives or lots of damage over time of aura damage items. Heroes like Venomancer and Radiance are good examples of when a Blink Dagger may be less useful.

Black King Bar

You will need a BKB in most Dota 2 esports games as Doom needs to lead the fight on the front lines and chase targets for Doom without being bursted down or kited.

Shiva’s Guard

Doom has very low armor throughout the game and a Shiva’s Guard helps to alleviates that largely. The extra intelligence also helps your mana-pool and slows enemies, making them more vulnerable to being chased by Doom.

Solar Crest

Solar Crest is another item that offers a lot of armor and some evasion to tank up against physical damage. It’s a good item against other tank heroes, as it can be used offensively to increase the damage they take.

Vladmir’s Offering

Vlad’s gives you a lot of armor and damage and gives your team a lot of early game team-fighting potential. This is a good pickup when you need to be aggressive in the early game.

Pipe of Insight

A Pipe of Insight is a good item to pickup in the mid game if you are facing lots of magical damage.

Late Game Items

Aghanim’s Scepter

Aghanim’s Scepter can be a good pickup if you are playing against heroes that are hard to lockdown or are strongly weakened by being Doomed with a Break. It’s especially a good pickup against heroes that are hard to lockdown and have relatively small HP pools, such as Weaver or many intelligence heroes.

Assault Cuirass

AC adds even more armor to Doom and makes him an even stronger physical damage dealer in the late game. It will also tank your team up against it and make your team deal more damage.

Heart of Tarrasque

In some games you will just need to tank up and be able to soak more damage and in these games, a Heart of Tarrasque is needed. Given Doom’s low armor, it is often better to get some items that provide armor before getting a Heart.

Octarine Core

Octarine Core will reduce the cooldown of Doom and give you spell lifesteal on Doom, Scorched Earth and Infernal Blade. When combined, these will give you lots of sustainability in team-fights, making you harder to take down and allow you to use Doom sooner.

Refresher Orb

A Refresher Orb will allow you to Doom 2 targets in the same team-fight which is needed against lineups that have several strong cores who are vulnerable to Doom.

Situational Items

Silver Edge

A Silver Edge is a natural extension to your Shadow Blade if you chose to get one rather than a Blink Dagger.

Heaven’s Halberd

Heaven’s Halberd gives you lots of strength and evasion which works well on Doom and provides you with the ability to disarm carries.

Lotus Orb

A Lotus Orb is a good item on Doom because it gives you lots of armor and mana and reflects single-target spells. It’s also a good item if you are getting silenced in team-fights a lot.

Linken’s Sphere

A Linken’s Sphere is a good option if you’re facing strong disables such as Duel or Reaper’s Scythe.

Blade Mail

A Blade Mail can be a decent mid game item against heroes that can quickly burst you down.

Radiance

A Radiance is aimed more towards a Doom who aims to fill a semi-carry role. Often this is hard to achieve lots of farm in the off lane, but if you are able to farm your lane, you could go for this item. It will make you farm faster, and when combined with Scorched Earth it will deal a large amount of damage to all nearby enemies. If you follow this route you’ll carry games more often and thus climb Dota 2 ranks quicker.

Hand of Midas

A Hand of Midas can be a good item if you are able to farm your lane and get it relatively early. Mainly, it’s only really good if you intend to fulfill a semi-carry role.

Aeon Disk

An Aeon Disk can be a good item against lineups with lots of disables. It will also make you a lot harder to kill and give you a chance to cast Doom before you die in case you get initiated on and stun-locked.

Nullifier

A Nullifier can be a good item against heroes with buffs that make them hard to kill. The armor it provides is good on Doom as well as he has quite low armor.

Interesting Doom Match-ups

Carries with few spells

Heroes like Drow Ranger, Lifestealer and Viper are all very strong heroes against Doom’s ultimate unless he has an Agh’s. This is because these heroes gain most of their strength from their passives which Doom does not normally disable.

Linken’s Sphere/Octarine Core

Doom is reflected by both of these items, so you should keep track of these items and their use/cooldowns.

Mobile heroes

Heroes with spells like Blink or Leap can be hard to lockdown. Doom’s ultimate is a very good spell at preventing enemies from escaping and being able to contribute much in team-fights.
