Faceless Void Dota 2 Guide – Strongest 1v1 Hero in Patch 7.17

Faceless Void is a very strong safe-lane carry who excels in team-fights and staying alive. The low cooldown of max level Time Walk allows him to chase, flee and survive engagements with ease. The Bash from Time Lock and the AoE disable of Chronosphere make Void one of the strongest 1 vs 1 heroes in the entire game, as it almost guarantees him several seconds to attack his enemies unhindered.

At level 25, he becomes incredibly strong whichever talent he chooses. The 25% Backtrack can make him even harder to bring down, especially if he gets lucky with dodging large nukes and the extra Chronosphere AoE makes it even easier for him to disable his enemies. Time Dilation offers a large amount of team-fighting potential, as enemies may not be able to use their spells for a longer time and may be significantly slowed.

His skill and item builds are very flexible, which allows him to adapt to whatever situation he is in. Overall, Void is a very potent hero who can be hard to kill and can out-carry most carries in the game.

Complete Faceless Void Spell guide

Time Walk

Void jumps to the target point and also restores any health lost in the past 2 seconds. While he leaps, he is invulnerable to all damage and spell effects. Although it does not disjoint projectiles, you can effectively leap into them to negate their effects. This spell is usually maxed either first or secondly depending on how much you need it in your lane. It provides Void with a lot of potential utility, as he can use it both offensively, to reach fleeing enemies, or defensively, to reach a safer place or to heal up any lost health.

If you’re taking a lot of harass damage in your lane, then it will help you to sustain yourself in the early game. Otherwise, if you have a mostly uncontested lane, it may be better to max Time Walk after Time Lock. Be careful about using Time Walk to initiate onto an enemy, as you won’t be able to use it for 6 seconds, during which time the enemy team could counter-initiate your jump and kill you.

Time Dilation

Void locks the cooldowns of all nearby enemies for several seconds, slowing their movement speed by 14% for each cooldown frozen. This is a great team-fight spell, as it can prevent enemies from fighting back for a significant period. However, due to the nature of the spell, it is usually best to leave this spell for the mid game, as you are unlikely to engage in many team-fights in the early game. It can be a great spells to use at the end of Chronosphere, as it will keep enemies disabled for even longer, allowing you to chase them down more easily.

Time Lock

Void gains a chance to bash an enemy, dealing bonus damage and stunning them for 1 second, or 2 against non-hero units. Time Lock does not stack with other bashes – the bashes from Skull Basher and Abyssal Blade do not work on Void. This spell is usually maxed first, as it gives Void a lot more solo-kill potential, especially when he hits level 6. However, if you are in a hard lane it may be better to max it after Time Walk, as this will increase your survivability. The bash from Time Lock pierces spell immunity, which allows Void to come out on top of almost any 1 vs 1 engagement. Void can also lifesteal off of the damage dealt from Time lock, which makes items such as Mask of Madness especially effective on him.

Chronosphere

Faceless Void freezes all units in the target area, preventing them from moving or making any actions. Void also moves at increased movement speed inside the area. Aghanim’s Scepter decreases the cooldown to 60 seconds. Chronosphere will reveal any invisible units and also fully works against buildings. Enemy units cannot be pushed out of its area or pass through it with most position altering spells, but they can be hooked by Meat Hook and swapped by Netherswap, for example. Chronosphere is one of the strongest team-fighting spells in the entire game, as it can potentially stun enemies through magic immunity in a very large radius, especially with the level 25 AoE increase talent.

How to use it:

In the early game, this spell should be used to kill enemies who don’t have any back up and can easily be picked off with a few lucky bashes. Even if you don’t kill them during the Chronosphere, you will usually be able to use Time Walk to chase them down and finish them. Be very careful of trapping your any allies in its AoE damage. It can also be quite easy to be greedy with the spell in such a way that you try to catch many enemies in its area at once but due to some delay fail to hit any. Try to secure Chronosphere on the most important enemies in a team-fight and lay into them the best you can.

Be aware of how the heroes on the enemy team will react to your Chronosphere if they are not caught in its AoE. For example, if the enemy team have a Pudge, it will be important to try to catch him in it, because otherwise he will try to hook out his most important ally who is caught in it. Many heroes will react by using whatever spells they have to make it harder for you to kill their allies. Consider what everyone on their team will do, and try to use your Chronosphere around them and their respective spells.

Best Faceless Void Talents

Level 10: +20 Damage or +8 Strength

The extra damage is almost always a stronger alternative. It’s very impactful on Void as it will help you to farm a bit faster and kill enemies a lot quicker. Void also usually builds around lots of attack speed, which means each attack will hit harder. The extra strength can be good if you are behind a bit or if you’re simply taking a lot of damage in fights and need to tank up a bit more. It can be especially helpful if the enemy team have lots of control in the form of silences or stuns, as it may help you to live long enough to cast Time Walk. Unless you really need the extra strength however, the damage is almost always a better alternative.

Level 15: +100 Time Lock Damage or +300 Health

At level 15, it’s generally still the same idea with the level 10 talent choice. The extra Time Lock damage is quite significant, especially as you gain more and more attack speed and you increase the rate at which you will proc them. The extra health offers you quite a lot of survivability however, much more so than the 160 HP from the 8 strength at level 10. If you find yourself taking a lot of damage in team-fights, then the extra health can be a very helpful alternative, as it may provide you with enough of a window to cast Time Walk and restore a bit more health.

Level 20: +40 Attack Speed or +500 Timewalk Cast Range

Both of these talents are very strong on Void, but in general, you’ll get more utility out of the extra Time Walk cast range. It will help you to chase fleeing enemies a lot more easily and also gives you a bigger chance of getting out of a bad position, as it almost doubles the cast range of the spell. However, if you’re not playing against particularly mobile heroes or if you’re unlikely to need the extra jump distance to escape your foes, then the extra Attack Speed will increase your damage output. It will help you bring down tougher foes more easily, as it will also increase your chances to get Time Lock bashes and is particularly strong if you have other proc items such as Maelstrom or Monkey King Bar.

Level 25: +25% Backtrack or +175 Chronosphere AoE

Backtrack gives void a chance to completely negate an instance of incoming damage. This can be an incredibly strong talent against heroes who have burst damage spells or can deal large amounts of damage in relatively few attacks. It can also be very strong in tanking you up, as it can effectively work as un-counterable evasion against carries in the late game, as it is not disabled by Break. Overall, it’s a very powerful level 25 talent, which will help Void to more easily challenge enemy carries toe-to-toe.

What Items to build on Faceless Void

Starting Items

  • Tango
  • Healing Salve
  • Stout Shield
  • Enchanted Mango
  • Iron Branch

Void’s starting items should help to stay in lane for as long as possible, as doing so will allow him to farm the lane for longer, and without being zoned out of the lane as easily. A Stout Shield, Healing Salve and Tangos are almost always necessary in Dota 2 esports, and in many situations where you expect to take a lot of harass or damage in the lane, you’ll need two sets of Tangos. With any gold left over, you can purchase some Iron Branches. Void has quite high base damage and decent damage at level one, which means you usually won’t need a Quelling Blade, unless your last-hits are being strongly contested. In this case, it’s almost always better to get one from the side-shop, as it would otherwise leave you with less gold for regen.

Early Game Items

Power Treads

Power Treads are usually the most effective boots to get on Void, since they provide more damage and attack speed. The attack speed provides him with more chances of getting Time Lock bashes off and scale into the mid and late game a bit better than alternatives such as Phase Boots or Boots of Travel.

Mask of Madness

Mask of Madness works very well on Void for a few reasons. Using it after Chronosphere will allow you to attack enemies very quickly for half of its duration, which will help you to get lots of Time Lock procs. In addition to this, you will also Lifesteal off of the damage dealt from Time Lock procs, which will effectively help to sustain you. This means that you can also use it while farming to help restore your health between fights and throughout the early and mid game. However, it will prevent you from using Time Walk for 8 seconds, and will also reduce your armor, which can be risky against physical damage dealers, particularly if they are ranged and can attack you from outside of Chronosphere.

Ring of Aquila

A Ring of Aquila provides Void with lots of helpful early game stats. It provides more agility, damage, armor and mana regeneration. All of these stats help you to have more of an impact in the early game, and the mana regeneration will help to sustain your mana-pool so that casting Time Walk won’t completely wear down your mana-pool and allow you to cast Chronosphere when it’s off cooldown without being too low on mana.

Mid Game Items

Shadow Blade

A Shadow Blade is a very strong mid game item to get on Faceless Void because it allows you to hunt down enemy cores and very easily kill them with a Chronosphere. In most games, you won’t team-fight until the mid-to-late game, so using Chronosphere to net you kills on the enemy cores will slow their farm rates down and is likely to allow your team to take more objectives uncontested. Try to look for windows of opportunity when Chronosphere is close to coming off cooldown, as you can take into account travel time to reach the enemy to be more efficient with your time. Be careful about going on enemies close to their towers or shrines, as their allies may be able to teleport in and help them out.

Black King Bar

A Black King Bar is core item on Void in almost every game. This is because any hero who you fail to catch inside of the Chronosphere will try to stop you from killing their allies by stunning you or zoning you away through lots of magic damage. It will also allow you to go on enemies without Chronosphere a bit more reliably. This is because in the early-to-mid game, you won’t be able to fight very effectively without Chronosphere, as you may be killed if you are controlled by the enemy team. Therefore, the ability to become magic immune will allow you act as more of a carry even when Chronosphere is on cooldown or simply without having to use it. The best Dota 2 players always get this item at some point in their games.

Maelstrom

A Maelstrom is another great item on Void because it’s a relatively cheap mid game item and provides Void with lots of benefits. Void lacks a way to flash-farm very effectively, but a Maelstrom will increase his farm rate. The lightning proc will also allow you to deal more damage to enemies caught in Chronosphere, as the lighting procs will bounce to enemies caught in its AoE.

Late Game Items

Aghanim’s Scepter

An Aghanim’s Scepter is a great item on Void in many situations. It reduces the cooldown of Chronosphere to 60 seconds, which means that he can team-fight much more effectively a lot more often. The cooldown is halved from level 3 Chronosphere and this can be strong if you are struggling to fight properly without it, which may be the case if you are very far behind, are playing against mobile heroes or if you need more control on your team. It can be particularly strong if you’re team-fighting very often, despite not having Chronosphere off cooldown.

Daedalus

A Daedalus can be a great late game item if you need more damage. The problem with Daedalus is that it doesn’t grant any attack speed or any utility. For example, A Butterfly provides you with damage, attack speed, evasion and an active which allows you to move quickly, and an MKB provides you with Accurcay and a bonus damage proc chance. A Daedalus provides raw damage, and this can be good if you’re struggling to bring down bigger, tougher enemies quickly. However, it may not always be a better alternative to items which provide lots of attack speed, as they help you to get more Time Lock procs which deal bonus damage.

Mjollnir

A Mjollnir is a great upgrade to maelstrom. It provides a massive increase to his attack speed which will help to get more Time Lock bashes and also allows the user to place a powerful defensive active. The active can be placed on Void and utilized effectively, since it’s not a problem if Void is attacked since he can usually use Time Walk to restore any health lost to attacks.

Butterfly

A Butterfly provides Void with a number of great helpful stat increases and a helpful active. It provides agility, attack speed and damage, all of which help you to hit harder and faster, which allows you to get more Time Lock procs. The evasion will also allow you to fight enemy carries toe-to-toe more easily and tank up more physical damage. The active can be used to help you catch up to or flee enemies which, when used with Time Walk, will make you very mobile and hard to catch up to.

Moon Shard

A Moon Shard should be gotten as a 7th item, or perhaps 6th if there is no other item you need. The increased attack speed is great on Void because it really helps you to keep enemies stun-locked through Time Lock bashes.

Situational Items

Linken’s Sphere

A Linken’s Sphere can be a strong item on Void. It provides a lot of stats and lots of regen in addition to the Spellblock passive. It may be necessary against heroes with strong single-target spells such as Doom or Duel, as these spells prevent you from fighting and will often get you killed. However, in most games you will need both a Linken’s Sphere and a BKB, since a Linken’s won’t let you front-line as effectively as a BKB would. When your Linken’s is popped, be careful of enemies looking to follow-up with other single-target spells, so consider using Time Walk to get to safety.

Monkey King Bar

A Monkey King Bar provides a large amount of damage, some minor attack speed and a massive increase to his accuracy in addition to a bonus magical damage proc. It may be necessary against heroes with lots of evasion, as it helps to ensure that you don’t miss your attacks. This is especially important because missing attacks also prevents you from potentially bashing them with Time Lock, which helps to control enemies and deal more damage.

Nullifier

A Nullifier provides lots of damage and a small amount of armor, and the active is incredibly powerful against heroes who rely on using their items to keep them alive. Heroes who have low inherent mobility but are able to survive because of items such as Black King Bar or Eul’s Scepter will be much easier to kill and in many cases you’ll even be able to solo-kill them.

Silver Edge

A Silver Edge is a great upgrade to a Shadow Blade, and is often necessary against many heroes with strong passives. It provides a lot of stats and the break will allow you to fight enemy carries more easily, or at least forcing them to use their Black King Bar.

Battlefury

A Battlefury can be helpful against heroes such as Phantom Lancer who spawn a large number of illusions. However, Faceless Void doesn’t flash-farm the same way heroes such as Anti-Mage do, which makes the item a bit less useful. An early Battlefury also delays Void’s other early and mid game items, which in effect delays his ability to team-fight earlier on. Overall, it can be good in some situations, but in general, doesn’t really fit his most optimal play-style.

Manta Style

A Manta Style provides Void with lots of useful mid game stats and the ability to create powerful illusions and purge yourself of most negative de-buffs. This can be great if you’re playing against a lot of spells which you can purge or disjoint or in other ways block. You can also make small plays where you use your illusions to block an enemy Pudge from hooking his ally inside of Chronosphere, as they will move at the same hasted movement speed as the real Void.

Interesting Faceless Void Match-ups

Low cooldown spells

Heroes such as Bristleback and Skywrath Mage have spells with very low cooldowns. If you catch them out while they are on cooldown by using Time Dilation, they won’t be able to use them for a relatively very long time. Try to keep a track of when these enemies use these spells, as doing so will also guarantee a slow and make it easier for you to lock them down.

Rubick

Rubick can steal Chronosphere and Time Walk relatively easily, provided you don’t use Time Dilation to prevent him from stealing either. Be very careful about using Chronosphere if Time Dilation is on cooldown, as he may steal it and use it on your own team. Chronosphere does not affect you, however you do not gain the movement speed bonus.

Phoenix

Almost all of Phoenix’s spells can be used offensively to make it harder for Void to get kills on his allies inside of Chronosphere. On the other hand, he also makes a great ally, as his spells can be used to deal a lot of damage to enemies, and he can utilize Supernova very effectively.

Pudge

Pudge can use Meat Hook on his allies who are affected by Chronosphere, so try to make sure that either you catch him inside of it, or that you use Chrono after he has already used it. Keep an eye on whether he has an Aghanim’s Scepter or not, since even if he does, he will be able to hook again in 4 seconds.

Vengeful Spirit

Vengeful Spirit can use Nether Swap on her allies to prevent you from killing them inside of Chronosphere. Play similarly as if you would against a Pudge, and try to either use it after she has used her ultimate or catch her inside of the Chrono. She can also make a strong ally, since she can use Wave of Terror on the enemies inside of Chrono.

Shadow Demon

Shadow Demon has many ways to deal delayed damage which Void will not restore after using Time Walk. He can also use Disruption on his Chronosphered allies to shield them from your attacks and any damage from your teammates. Demonic Purge is also very strong against Void, as it often forces him to use Time Walk earlier than is optimal. In most cases, you will need a Linken’s Sphere against him.

Dazzle

Dazzle can use Shallow Grave on any ally affected by Chronosphere, so either catch him inside of it, wait until he has used it, or attack a different target.

Team-fight ultimates

Any ally with a powerful team-fight ultimate which deals AoE damage is a great ally to Faceless Void, as they can drop whatever spells they have in their arsenals on top of the heroes you catch in Chronosphere. Lich , Witch Doctor and Jakiro are particularly strong, as enemies will be locked within the range of these spells and will often take a tremendous amount of damage as a result.
