Gyrocopter Dota 2 Guide – Strong Lane Presence in Patch 7.14

Gyrocopter is usually played as a carry in the safe lane. He has a very strong lane presence through Rocket Barrage and Call Down. Flak Cannon and Rocket Barrage allow him to farm stacked camps in the mid and late game, and team-fight very effectively.

In some games you can opt to max Rocket Barrage lastly, which may sometimes be preferable against lineups where you don’t particularly want to stand near the enemy and the ability to attack from a range is advantageous and safer.

His item build is very situational as well, although he tends to fall off in the late game because his spells become less impactful as enemies buy BKBs and other defensive items. He has relatively short attack range, no innate mobility spell and is relatively squishy.

Complete Gyrocopter Spell guide

Rocket Barrage

Gyrocopter rapidly fires rockets at nearby enemy units. This spell can be used to farm creep camps very quickly and can deal a lot of damage to a single target on a low cooldown. It should almost always be maxed first as it deals a massive amount of magic damage at level 4 and can be used to farm and fight. When you use Rocket Barrage, try to stay as close to the enemy as possible, without putting yourself at risk. Try to move close enough so that you can regularly attack the enemy whilst staying in range for Rocket Barrage. Rocket Barrage is one of the main reasons Gyrocopter requires items that provide movement speed, as he needs to be able to chase enemies down. It can be good to pop Rocket Barrage when melee enemies go on you, as they will be forced to take a lot of damage. If you are against heroes who are dangerous to be stood close to, either because they can burst you down or disable you, then it may be better to ignore Rocket Barrage and max your other skills instead.

Homing Missile

Gyrocopter places a missile which, after a few seconds, launches after the target enemy. The missile tracks the enemy, gaining speed as it travels. You can get one value-point in it in the laning phase if you need more kill potential, or if you know you won’t be able to farm much in the mid game and as such, won’t be able to make much use out of Flak Cannon, although this is usually quite rare. In the laning stage, try to launch it from where the lane opponent will not be able to destroy it, as it only takes 3 hits to kill, which most ranged heroes can manage easily if not immediately threatened.

Homing Missile has recently received several buffs and is now a stronger spell than it has been previously. It launches faster, travels faster and deals a fixed amount of damage. It will also find a new target within a 700 range if the main target dies, prioritizing heroes. This makes it a very strong disable in almost all stages of the game.

Flak Cannon

Gyrocopter attacks all nearby enemies for a number of attacks. Flak Cannon is usually maxed secondly as it allows you to farm creep waves and neutral camps much more quickly and allows you to contribute a lot to team-fights from a safer distance. In the late game, Flak Cannon allows Gyrocopter to mow down the entire enemy team if he has enough damage. The search range from Flak Cannon is greater than Gyro’s regular attack range, which means that if you are within the 1250 search range of Flak Cannon, you need only attack the nearest enemy target to deal damage to enemies. This can also be done by A-clicking the ground. Flak Cannon has a very long cooldown, so if you expect a fight to break out soon, avoid using to clear creeps unless absolutely necessary.

Call Down

Gyro calls down 2 missiles at 2 second intervals after casting, damaging and slowing enemies caught in the target area. Aghanim’s Scepter adds the Side Gunner passive, which attacks a random nearby target at 1.1 second intervals. Call Down provides vision over the target area which means that you can prevent enemies from juking and evading the damage of Rocket Barrage. Call Down has a very low cooldown, which means it can be used to farm big creep waves or large jungle stacks and most likely be ready for the next team-fight.

Best Gyrocopter Talents

Level 10: +200 Health or +25 Damage

The extra HP can be good because Gyro has no innate mobility and is relatively squishy and extra HP helps with these issues. However, the extra damage helps you to farm faster and deal more damage to the entire enemy lineup when activating Flak Cannon. If you can get away with the damage, then you should take it in most cases. However, if you’re playing from behind, then the extra HP will help to keep you alive for longer.

Level 15: +11 Rocket Barrage Damage or +3 Flak Cannon Attacks

The extra Flak Cannon attacks are almost always a better choice in Dota 2 esports. They scale better into the late game because you rely on Flak Cannon to deal lots of damage to the enemy team in the mid and late game. There are very few situations where the Rocket Barrage Damage will outweigh the benefits from the extra Flak Cannon attacks.

Level 20: -25s Call Down Cooldown or +50 Movement Speed

The Call Down reduction brings the cooldown down to 20 seconds which is makes it a very strong spell to defend the high-ground with. It’s also very strong if the enemy team don’t have much or any magic immunity or if you need more control on your team from the slow it provides. The movement speed will help you to chase enemies and position yourself for Flak Cannon more easily. It will also help you to escape and kite enemies that can burst you down.

Level 25: Global Call Down or 3 Homing Missile charges

The Global Cooldown can be very strong against split-pushers or if you are missing barracks. It’s especially strong if you took the reduced Call Down cooldown. It can help you to chase enemies that are very mobile or hard to lockdown, as you can use it to scout their position after, for example, blinking away and slowing them. The Homing Missile Charges are also very effective at locking down enemies that are very slippery. They have quite a large cast range as well, and they are very effective in most situations. If you need more stuns, then the extra Homing Missiles can be a strong choice. Otherwise, the global cast range on Call Down can be very strong as well.

What Items to build on Gyrocopter

Starting Items

  • Healing Salve
  • Tango
  • Iron Branch
  • Circlet
  • Ring of Protection
  • Wraith Band
  • Clarity

Gyrocopter has quite low base damage, which means he needs more damage in the early game to help him last hit. There are a number of starting items you can get, depending on which items you want to build into in the early game. You can get a Wraith Band for a Ring of Aquila, Iron Branches for a Magic Wand or a Circlet for either a Wand or a Ring of Aquila later. You can get a Clarity if you expect to be very active in your lane and casting lots of spells.

Early Game Items

Phase Boots

Phase Boots are generally the Boots of Choice on Gyrocopter as they allow him to chase enemies with Rocket Barrage more easily. The movement speed also helps him to escape from enemies, given that he has quite limited mobility.

Ring of Aquila

A Ring of Aquila gives Gyro some more damage to last-hit with, some mana regen to let him cast his spells and farm a bit faster, and some more tower push which works well with Rocket Barrage and Flak Cannon.

Magic Wand

A Magic Wand is a good pickup as it helps to sustain your mana in the early and mid game and gives you a bit of HP regen as well.

Mask of Madness

A Mask of Madness will give you some sustain while you farm the jungle and let you deal more damage in team-fights. Make sure to use it after you have cast your spells, as you won’t be able to cast any spells for the next 8 seconds.

Dragon Lance

A Dragon Lance improves your very low attack range and gives you some decent early and mid game stats. It can be built into a Hurricane Pike if you need the mobility and defensive capabilities it offers.

Mid Game Items

Sange and Yasha

A Sange and Yasha will give you more movement speed, tank you up a bit and give you some more damage. Overall, it’s a great mid game fighting item which suits Gyro’s needs very well.

Hurricane Pike

A Hurricane Pike may be necessary against some hardest Dota 2 heroes that can burst you down if they get on top you. It’s great against heroes like Lifestealer, Ursa or Monkey King.

Black King Bar

A Black King Bar can be a good item on Gyro because it allows you to stand and deliver all of your Flak Cannon attacks without being burst down by magical damage. Gyro is quite squishy as well, and with no innate mobility spells, magical immunity is very valuable for him.

Butterfly

Butterfly is a great item on Gyrocopter because it gives him lots of damage, attack speed and evasion which is very helpful against enemy carries without true strike. You can also use Flutter to move in and out of fights more easily. Overall, Butterfly gives Gyro more of everything he needs

Late Game Items

Monkey King Bar

Monkey King Bar gives Gyrocopter lots of damage on all of his Flak Cannon attacks and gives them true strike. Attack modifiers aren’t applied to the Flak Cannon attacks, but true-strike is an exception to this, which makes it very good against heroes with evasion.

Satanic

A Satanic tanks Gyrocopter up a lot and allows him to sustain himself in long team-fights through the lifesteal it provides.

Divine Rapier

If you need more damage in the late game, a Divine Rapier is a very good item on Gyrocopter as it applies the damage to all nearby enemies through Flak Cannon. Usually you would get this as a last resort item if you don’t have enough damage on your team, and you can always get more than one.

Moon Shard

If you need more DPS without wanting to commit to a Rapier, then you can get a Moon Shard. The increased attack speed is nice, although given that Flak Cannon is a limited number of attacks, it doesn’t help in mowing down the enemy team any more.

Situational Items

Linken’s Sphere

If you are facing strong single-target spells, then you may need a Linken’s Sphere to increase your survivability in fights. It also provides some decent stats.

Blade Mail

A Blade Mail can be a good item against heroes that can burst you down quickly such as Clinkz, Ursa or any number of carries. It allows you to go up against other carries with Rocket Barrage without worrying about taking too much damage from them.

Diffusal Blade

A Diffusal Blade is a great item against heroes with strong buffs that make them harder to kill, such as Windrun or Ghost Shroud. It provides a large amount of agility and lets you chase down enemies more easily as you can land your spells much more easily.

Mjollnir

A Mjollnir can be a good item on Gyro if you need to deal with creep or illusion heroes. The best Dota 2 players won’t really rush it, but it remains a great situational pick nonetheless.

Aghanim’s Scepter

An Aghanim’s Scepter can be a good item on Gyro if you need more DPS. It will proc any attack modifiers, although Gyro doesn’t tend to have many anyway.

Heaven’s Halberd

If you need a disable against strong carries and you have a Sange and Yasha, you can disassemble it and build a Halberd. You can even disassemble the Halberd and build a Butterfly with the Talsiman of Evasion in the late game.

Manta Style

If you don’t quite need to get a BKB, but need to deal with a few silences or slows, you can get a Manta Style, as it will purge you of most debuffs when used.

Silver Edge

If you need to deal with some strong passive abilities, then you can get a Silver Edge. The stats it provides you with are decent, and you can use it as a form of survivability in many situations.

Eye of Skadi

The stats from Skadi are very strong for Gyrocopter as it will tank you up and give you more damage. The MS/AS slow is also very strong against carries and will help you to 1v1 them in the late game. This slow is only applied to the main target you are attacking, but it is nonetheless a strong late game item if you need to tank up against lots of damage.

Nullifier

If you are facing enemies with strong buffs or items that make them hard to kill, a Nullifier can be a strong item. The armor it provides is decent on Gyro, but the massive damage it provides is great as it is applies to all enemies when you activate Flak Cannon.

Interesting Gyrocopter Match-ups

Illusion/Creep heroes

Gyro’s immense amount of AoE damage and low cooldown spells make him very good at dealing with illusions and creeps/summons.

Magic immunity

Heroes with high magic resistance or magic immunity are able to resist or simply block a significant amount of Gyrocopter’s damage output. 3 out of his 4 spells are Magical damage, which means that they will only take damage from right-clicks and Flak Cannon when magic immune.

Burst damage

Enemies with large amounts of burst damage, be it magical or physical, are very strong against Gyrocopter. This is because he has no innate survivability or mobility spell and is quite squishy. Usually a BKB is purchased to prevent yourself from being brought down with magic damage, but the physical damage is potentially an issues unless you buy lots of items such as Satanic, Butterfly or Skadi to tank you up.
