Luna Dota 2 Guide – The Moon is your Weapon in Patch 7.14

Luna is recognised as quite a squishy carry. However, she is very capable of dealing a tremendous amount of damage to everything in her path, including heroes, creeps and buildings thanks to her Moon Glaives.

Her ultimate allows her to quickly burst down enemies the fewer targets there are around her. Due to this and the fact that she has increased night vision, she is a great team-fighting hero.

Ultimate Luna Spell guide

Lucent Beam

Luna stuns and damages the target enemy. This should always be maxed firstly because it gives you the most kill potential out of all of your spells. You also need points in it to deal any damage with Eclipse at level 6. It has a really low cooldown, which means it can be used several times in one engagement, and can be used to harass your lane opponent. It has a long range, so it’s often worth casting it if your support is moving in to harass the enemy.

Moon Glaives

Luna’s regular attacks bounce and strike nearby enemies units. This is maxed secondly because it allows you to farm jungle camps and creep-waves much more quickly. It also allows you to pressure towers in the early and mid game much more effectively, as the attacks will bounce off buildings as well. Having points in Moon Glaives will push the lane out, so try to keep the lane as pulled back as you can by denying your creeps a lot, keeping good creep equilibrium and having supports pull the lane. The bounces do not provide lifesteal.

Lunar Blessing

Usually Lunar Blessing is gotten at level 1 and then maxed lastly. This is because it will really help you to last-hit in the early levels, as Luna has very low base damage. The extra damage will also affect your best hard supports in Dota 2 and make them deal even more harass damage. In the late game, Lunar Blessing also provides Luna with far night vision, allowing her to scout out enemies from a farther distance and allows her team to have more information when team-fighting at night.

Eclipse

Luna strikes nearby enemies with a number of Lucent Beams, dealing damage equal to the level of Lucent Beam and turning day to night for 10 seconds. These beams to not stun and there is a max number of times that the same enemy can be struck. Aghanim’s Scepter allows Luna to cast Eclipse on an allied target so that it follows them, or have it cast on an area. The total number of Lucent Beams, the rate at which they strike and the duration of Eclipse are all increased and the limit of strikes per unit is removed.

If you die during its effects, Eclipse will be cancelled. The range of the spell is quite low, so make sure you are able to be relatively close to enemies after you cast the spell. At level 1, the total number of strikes is equal to the max number an enemy can be struck, which means that you can often get solo kills if the enemy is alone.

Talents

Level 10: +200 Cast Range or +20 Attack Speed

The attack speed is almost always the better option here. It increases your DPS and directly affects your Manta Style illusions as well. The extra cast range affects only Lucent Beam and arguably Hurricane Pike. This is the top choice for all the best Dota 2 players.

Level 15: +24 Lunar Blessing Damage or -4 Lucent Beam Cooldown

The extra damage is usually a better option as it will help you deal more damage in fights and farm a bit faster. It’s a great option if you have allies that right-click a lot in team-fights as they can also make use of the extra damage. The reduced Lucent Beam cooldown can be good if you are going for a magic damage build or if you need more disables on your team.

Level 20: +100 Lucent Beam Damage or +10 All Stats

If you have an Aghanim’s Scepter, then the extra Lucent Beam damage can be a very strong talent. The extra stats will tank you up a bit and make your illusions a bit stronger as well. If you have gone for more of a right-click build, then the extra stats are probably a better choice. It can perhaps be a good choice if you’re against heroes that are very vulnerable to magical damage, as it will effectively add 500/800/1100 potential magic damage to Eclipse.

Level 25: +0.25s Eclipse Ministun or 25% Lifesteal

The lifesteal is usually always a better option as it gives you much more sustainability in fights. It also stacks additively with Satanic, which means that you can have a massive 50% lifesteal on your attacks in the late game. The Eclipse ministun can very strong if you have an Aghanim’s Scepter, or if the enemy line-up has lots of channelling abilities or abilities with long cast times. Even when they do, the lifesteal is still a very strong talent.

The Best Luna Item Build

Starting Items

  • Healing Salve
  • Tango
  • Iron Branch
  • Enchanted Mango
  • Ring of Protection
  • Wraith Band

Luna’s base damage is quite low in the early levels, and although Lunar Blessing helps, it isn’t necessarily enough, especially if your last-hits are being contested. A Wraith Band gives you lots of damage, although at the cost of being able to afford less regen. You can do this in lanes where you don’t expect to take much harass or against opponents who can jungle very easily if they get zoned out.

An Enchanted Mango is a great item on Luna because it provides you with a bit of regen and can be built into a Magic Wand. The burst mana regen can help you to get kills with Lucent Beam as well, but if your lane opponent can easily farm their jungle, you might be able to get away with a Wraith Band into a fast Ring of Aquila.

Early Game Items

Ring of Aquila

A Ring of Aquila is a great item on Luna because it gives her some mana regeneration, increases her pushing power even more and increases her last-hitting damage.

Power Treads

Power Treads are the boots of choice for Luna because they give her lots of agility and attack speed which benefits her illusions greatly.

Magic Wand

A Magic Wand gives Luna some more sustainability in the early game. It can gain charges in early skirmishes as you can fight quite well as long as you have Eclipse up.

Mask of Madness

A Mask of Madness is a great item on Luna because it can be disassembled into a Butterfly and a Satanic later in the game. It gives you a massive boost to your DPS and you don’t really need to cast spells after your initial Lucent Beam and Eclipse. If you against lots of minus armor, you will probably want to skip this as you may end up getting heavily punished for it.

Yasha

A Yasha helps you to farm a bit faster, move around the map more quickly and deal a bit more damage in the early and mid game. This should be the first part of your Manta Style.

Dragon Lance

A Dragon Lance gives you more attack range which is very important for Luna, as she has rather low attack range for a ranged hero. This helps you to attack from a safer distance and gives you lots of stats for you and your illusions.

Mid Game Items

Hurricane Pike

If you’re facing heroes that can slow you, burst you down or kite you with spells like Power Cogs, then you will probably need a Hurricane Pike.

Manta Style

The illusions from Manta Style benefit from Luna’s very high agility and stat gain as well as from Moon Glaives. When combined, these things make them very effective at destroying buildings and dealing a massive amount of damage in team-fights. The defensive purge from Manta Style is also very helpful for Luna, as it spares you from having to use BKB.

dota-2-luna-main

@ Dota2HQ

Black King Bar

A BKB is necessary on Luna in almost every game. Being able to become magic immune allows you to move around the battlefield without being disabled and chase enemies down with Eclipse much more easily. Luna is also very squishy, and this helps to keep you alive in team-fights. This is simply a no-brainer if you’re chasing those Dota 2 ranks.

Butterfly

A Butterfly gives you a lot of agility and attack speed which your illusions also benefit from. The evasion is also very strong in helping you to tank up against physical damage dealers and 1v1 carries more easily.

Late Game Items

Satanic

A Satanic gives Luna the ability to sustain herself in longer team-fights in the late game. Overall, it’s a very strong late game item.

Eye of Skadi

If you need more lockdown on your team against heroes with very high movement speed or mobility spells, then an Eye of Skadi is a great pickup. It will tank you up, give you a bit more damage and greatly strengthen your illusions.

Monkey King Bar

An MKB may be needed against heroes with high evasion. The attack speed is great on Luna and is affected by her illusions as well.

Boots of Travel

Travels free up another item slot for you and give you move movement speed than Power Treads do. This helps you to kite enemies more easily and chase them down with Eclipse more easily.

Moon Shard

If you have 6 items already, then you should consume a Moon Shard for the extra attack speed.

Situational Items

Linken’s Sphere

A Linken’s Sphere may be needed against heroes with strong single target disables. the stats it provides are great for Luna and overall it can be a very strong item. It’s generally not worth getting a BKB and a Linken’s Sphere, as this limits your offensive capabilities, however there are situations where they both may be needed.

Daedalus

If you just need to deal more damage in team-fights or be able to burst down a hero faster, then you may need a Daedalus. While your illusions and glaives don’t benefit from the crit, it will still give you a massive DPS boost.

Assault Cuirass

An Assault Cuirass can be a decent item on Luna if you’re facing lots of physical damage and/or minus armor. The attack speed and minus armor aura helps you to dish out more damage, although overall it doesn’t benefit illusions very much. Still, this items sees a lot of use in competitive DPC Dota.

Aghanim’s Scepter

An Aghanim’s Scepter can be a strong item on Luna if you are against heroes who are somewhat vulnerable to magical damage and if your team is capable of snowballing in the mid game. If you’re against heroes that can kite you with invisibility or mobility spells easily when you use Eclipse, then it might be a slightly worse option.

Refresher Orb

If you have gone for an Aghanim’s Scepter, then a Refresher Orb can be a strong item. It can also be good if you are in the very late game and are 6 slotted. In this case it can be placed in the backpack when on cooldown and used to refresh the cooldowns of BKB and Eclipse. Alternatively, you can get it after getting an Aghanim’s Scepter in the mid game. Eclipse stacks fully if you use it multiple times, so you don’t need to wait for the Eclipse duration to end.

Match-ups that can mess up Luna’s games

Shadow Demon

Shadow Demon is a very strong support hero against Luna because he can create 2 very powerful illusions of her and slow her through magic immunity. There isn’t much you can do against a Shadow Demon other than trying to position yourself to the best of your ability.

Illusion/creep heroes

Although you can clear illusions and creeps rather quickly with your Moon Glaives, they may end up soaking a lot of the damage from the Lucent Beam strikes of Eclipse. Just be careful about how you use Eclipse in team-fights.
