Silencer is a support hero with some very powerful capabilities. Here are some of his main strengths:

• He can slow and damage enemies for 6 seconds in a 425 radius area, and at the same time punish them for using spells during this duration by prolonging it with 4 seconds every time a target uses an ability.
• He can cause a target to take damage and become silenced for up to 6 seconds, using his Last Word ability.
• He can deal additional pure damage with his basic attacks, thanks to his Glaives of Wisdom ability.
• He can silence all enemy heroes around the map for 4/5/6 seconds, using his Global Silence ability.
• Every time an enemy hero dies near him, he steals 2 points of intelligence from that hero.

What Items to build build on Silencer

Silencer’s item build should generally be designed to improve his sustainability, mobility and capacity to help his teammates. Here are some of the most efficient items that will turn Silencer into one of the hardest Dota 2 heroes to beat:

• Tranquil Boots: they improve your ability to regenerate your HP and give you great movement speed.
• Magic Wand: this is a good early game item on any hero.
• Infused Raindrop: gives you good mana regeneration and protection against magical damage.
• Urn of Shadows: gives you good mana regeneration and the ability to heal your allies for great amounts. Every charge is the equivalent of a Healing Salve.
• Glimmer Cape: good for escaping, initiating, increasing magic resistance and helping allies in difficult situations.
• Force Staff: an excellent choice on any support hero. The HP regeneration, intelligence and added mobility are always very valuable. This item also gives you the ability to help allies from time to time.
• Ghost Scepter: gives you immunity to physical damage for 4 seconds, at the cost of decreasing your magic resistance by 40%. This is a good item when dealing with a line-up that’s heavily focused on physical damage.
• Drum of Endurance: gives you good stats, mobility, mana regeneration and is excellent for key fighting and pushing moments.
• Medallion of Courage: gives you good mana regeneration and allows your team to kill Roshan more easily. You can also use its active on allies and foes, depending on the situation.
• Mekansm: gives you HP regeneration, armor, stats, and the ability to heal yourself and your teammates in key moments. Can and should be upgraded into Guardian Greaves.
• Pipe of Insight: this item gives you high HP regeneration, great survivability against magical damage and the ability to make your allies more survivable as well.
• Rod of Atos: gives you very good stats and the ability to root enemies for 2 seconds.

Silencer Abilities Explained

Arcane Curse

Curses enemies in a 425 radius area, causing them to take 14/22/30/38 damage per second and lose 9%/12%/15%/18% movement speed for 6 seconds. This duration is extended by 4 seconds every time affected units cast a spell.

Glaives of Wisdom

Enchants your basic attacks, causing them to deal an extra 15%/30%/45%/60% of your intelligence as damage. The type of this bonus damage is pure.

This ability can be improved by purchasing an Aghanim’s Scepter, which allows you to target spell immune units with it and deal twice as much damage against silenced enemies.

Last Word

Places a debuff on a target, causing it to become silenced for 3/4/5/6 seconds and take 150/200/250/300 damage if it casts a spell or if the debuff’s duration expires (4 seconds).

Global Silence

Silences all enemies around the map for 4/5/6 seconds.

What Talents work best for Silencer

• +25 attack speed / +5 armor – The first option is around 2 times more valuable than the second, but as a support you may not get to use your basic attacks all that much. So you might be better off taking the 5 armor.
• +2 intelligence steal / +90 gold per minute – As a support, you should almost always take the gold talent.
• +30 Arcane Curse damage / +125 attack range – Always take the first option as a support.
• +2s Global Silence duration / +20% Glaives of Wisdom damage – The first of these talents is almost always better.

Skill build order

When playing Silencer, you generally start with a point in Arcane Curse followed by a point in Last Word and then another one in Arcane Curse. At level 7 your skill build should be 4-0-2-1. Afterwards you maximize Last Word and Glaives of Wisdom in this order, putting points in your ultimate and taking talents whenever you can.

When to pick the hero

Silencer is a good pick whenever you need a hero that can stop a strong channeled ultimate (such as Enigma’s Black Hole) or break a deadly combination of enemy spells. He’s also very useful when having strong initiation and wanting to guarantee that the enemy team cannot respond in any way to one of their members dying. For instance, a Clockwerk may stun a target with his ultimate and be in a position to kill it. Usually, the enemy team will respond to this and save the target. But if everyone is silenced, that makes the save attempt much more difficult.

Map-wide silence is tough to beat

Silencer is a one of the best hard support heroes in Dota 2 that can disrupt the enemy lineup’s combos and offer his team a huge advantage in fights. When played correctly, silencer is a very scary hero to go up against, simply because you always have to take into account the possibility of a global silence shutting you down.
