Troll Warlord Dota 2 Guide – A True Hybrid Carry in Patch 7.07d

Troll Warlord is an agility hero that can be played as a safe or mid lane carry. He is very versatile and can alternate between a ranged and a melee form. Here are the areas in which Troll Warlord excels:

  • He has excellent mobility when he’s in melee form: 335 movement speed without any items.
  • He has very high attack speed, thanks to his Fervor, Berserker’s Rage (melee form) and Battle Trance abilities.
  • He can slow enemy movement speed by 40% for up to 4 seconds when he’s in ranged form.
  • He has a 10% of bashing enemies and stunning them for up to 2 seconds when he’s in melee form. When an enemy is bashed, he also takes 50 damage.
  • He can damage surrounding enemies and blind them for 5 seconds when he’s in melee form, causing them to miss 60% of their attacks. He also gains 6 bonus armor when he is in this form, so he’s very well equipped to deal with physical damage.

The Ultimate Troll Warlord Item build

Being a hero that relies almost exclusively on right click damage to farm, destroy buildings and kill enemies, Troll Warlord heavily depends on good items to have a significant impact on the game. However, once he obtains his core items, he becomes one of the hardest Dota 2 heroes to beat. Here are some of the most important items you should consider buying:

  • Stout Shield: gives you decent protection in the early game.
  • Phase Boots: the added speed from its active is excellent on any melee hero that needs to stay close to its targets, and the +24 bonus damage also synergizes well with Troll Warlord’s abilities.
  • Quelling Blade: this will improve your last hitting and your farming speed after the laning phase.
  • Magic Wand: this is a good early game item on any hero.
  • Vladmir’s Offering: gives you mana and health regeneration, lifesteal, armor and damage.
  • Hood of Defiance: an excellent alternative to other health regeneration items like
  • Sange and Yasha: gives you excellent stats, damage, movement speed and the ability to slow your enemies even further.
  • Silver Edge: gives you great stats, damage and initiation. Also helps you to survive in certain situations.
  • Black King Bar: if you’re facing a team that has a lot of disables and magical damage, you should buy this item either before or just after the S&Y.
  • Blink Dagger: can help you close the distance when fighting against heroes that like to attack and use spells from afar.
  • Manta Style: allows you to remove a lot of debuffs and confuse your enemies. It also gives a nice boost in multiple areas: movement speed, damage, attack speed and stats.
  • Linken’s Sphere: nice to have against long duration single target stuns and powerful ultimate abilities that pierce magic immunity: Duel, Rupture, Doom, Fiend’s Grip etc.
  • Satanic: this can be good in the late game if you have high damage, as it will basically bring you back to full HP with just a few attacks.
  • Battle Fury: this item is good when facing illusion based heroes like Phantom Lancer, Naga Siren and Terrorblade, because it makes your basic attacks do cleave damage.

Troll Warlord Abilities Explained

Berserker’s Rage

Allows you to swap from ranged to melee form (and vice versa). When you’re in melee form, this ability gives you +6 bonus armor, +10/20/30/40 movement speed, -0.2 base attack time and +10% bash chance, with 20/30/40/50 bash damage and 0.8/1.2/1.6/2 seconds bash duration.

Whirling Axes (ranged form)

This ability can be used when you’re in ranged form. It deals 75 damage and slows movement speed by 40% for 2.5/3/3.5/4 seconds.

Whirling Axes (melee form)

This ability can be used when you’re in melee form. It deals 75/125/175/225 damage and blinds enemies for 5 seconds, causing them to miss 60% of their attacks. Lasts for 3 seconds.

Fervor

Whenever you attack the same target multiple times, you gain 15/20/25/30 attack speed bonus with each attack. Stacks up to 7 times.

Battle Trance

Gives everyone on your team +60/120/180 bonus attack speed for 5 seconds. This skill can really turn the tide of battle in Dota 2 esports.

Top Talents to pick on Troll Warlord

  • +200 health / +10 agility – The agility is generally better than the health.
  • +50 Whirling Axes damage / +3 max Fervor stacks – You should always take the second option.
  • +50 damage / +20% evasion – Troll Warlord already has very good evasion thanks to his Whirling Axes ability, so the 50 damage is generally more useful.
  • Battle Trance dispels / -6s Whirling Axes cooldown – If enemies still don’t have Monkey King Bars, take the second option. Otherwise take the first.

Skill Build Order

When playing Troll Warlord, you generally start with a point in Berserker’s Rage and then go for a 4-1-1-1 or 1-4-1-1 build for the first 7 levels. Afterwards you alternate between the 2 remaining spells (of the first 3), putting points in your ultimate and taking talents whenever you can.

When to pick the hero

Troll Warlord is very strong against lineups that mostly rely on physical damage, lack high bursts of magical damage, and have carry and midlane heroes that don’t naturally buy a Monkey King Bar.

Troll Warlord is also good whenever you need a lot of attack speed in order to kill certain heroes. For example, Enchantress or Phoenix.

A carry that beats other carries

Troll Warlord is a carry hero that can beat most of the other heavy right clickers in the game, thanks to his abilities. If a combination of mobility, attack speed and protection against physical damage is what you need, you should consider picking him for the carry role.
