Warlock is a support hero that excels at team fighting, healing allies and damaging enemy heroes.

  • He can heal an ally or damage an enemy for 180/300/420/540 HP using his Shadow Word ability.
  • Using his Fatal Bonds ability, he can bind 3/4/5/6 targets together, causing 25% of the damage taken by one of them to be felt by the others.
  • He can slow enemies in a 650 radius area by up to 84%, using his Upheaval ability.
  • He can summon a powerful Golem and stun enemies in a 600 radius area using his Chaotic Offering ability. The Golem lasts for 60 unless it’s killed.

Warlock Item build

When playing Warlock, your item build should improve your mobility, mana pool, survivability, ultimate ability and capacity to help your teammates. Subsequently, these are some of the key items you should consider buying in Dota 2 esports:

  • Arcane Boots: they greatly improve your mana pool and your ability to regenerate it.
  • Magic Wand: this is a good early game item on any hero.
  • Infused Raindrop: gives you good mana regeneration and protection against magical damage.
  • Force Staff: an excellent choice on any support hero. The HP regeneration, intelligence and added mobility are always very valuable. This item also gives you the ability to save allies from time to time.
  • Glimmer Cape: good for escaping, initiating, increasing magic resistance and helping allies in difficult situations.
  • Aghanim’s Scepter: improves your ultimate ability, allowing you to summon two Golems instead of one.

Warlock Abilities Explained

Fatal Bonds

Binds 3/4/5/6 enemy units together, making them share 25% of the damage dealt to the original target. The effect lasts for 25 seconds.

Shadow Word

Can either heal an ally or damage an enemy for 180/300/420/540 HP over 12 seconds.

Upheaval

Reduces movement speed by 7%/14%/21%/28% per second in 650 radius area. The more it’s channeled, the more it slows, up to a maximum of 84%. The slow effect lasts for 3 seconds after the heroes have left the target area. Can be channeled for up to 16 seconds from a range of 1200 units.

Chaotic Offering

Summons a Golem and stuns all enemy units in a 600 radius area. The Golem lasts for 1 minute or until it’s killed, and it is under your direct control.

Best Warlock Talents

  • +125 cast range / +5% Fatal Bonds damage – Definitely take the cast range bonus.
  • -7s Shadow Word cooldown / +40% XP gain – The XP gain bonus is no doubt substantial, but at this point you’re already close to your peak. So the first option will generally help you more.
  • 250 Shadow Word AoE / summons a Golem on death – The first option is generally much more useful and synergizes well with your level 15 Shadow Word talent.
  • magic immunity for the Chaotic Offering Golem / +20 Chaotic Offering Golem armor – If the enemy lineup has a lot of magical damage or multiple disables, the first option is better. Otherwise you should take the second.

Warlock Skill build

When playing Warlock, you should start with a point in Shadow Word followed by a point in either Fatal Bonds or Upheaval. At level 7 your skill build should be 1-4-1-1. Afterwards you alternate between Fatal Bonds and Upheaval, putting points in your ultimate and taking talents whenever you can.

When to pick the hero

Warlock is the right choice whenever you want to have good sustainability in the laning phase and very strong team fight potential in the subsequent stages of the game. In particular, he is good against lineups that have a lot of melee heroes, being able to use all of his abilities effectively against them.

Secure Important Objectives

Warlock is a support hero that can improve his team’s laning phase and fighting potential. Whenever his ultimate is available his team can usually force a favorable fight around an important objective. In turn, this should help your team secure more victories and climb Dota 2 ranks more efficiently.
