What does the Nullifier do in Dota 2?

Nullifier is one of the late game Dota 2 items, which was introduced in Dota 2 Update 7.07. In this article, we take a look at what the Nullifier exactly does in Dota 2.

During its initial debut, the item muted and dispelled the target, making it a very strong counter to even the strongest late game carries. And don’t get us started on what a nightmare it was for a support player to be a target of an enemy hero with Nullifier.

For what it’s worth, Nullifier is now a mere husk of its original feature. After the patch 7.25 and thousands of terrifying matches, where Nullifier was overpowered, it received a massive nerf.

What makes the nerf so impactful is that the item no longer mutes enemies, which was what made it such a powerful late game disable and counter against defensive items. This is especially true when used against late game heroes that rely on their active skillsets and items to be at their best or escape method.

Now, Nullifier’s Nullify ability only dispels a target over time. It certainly is still useful in situations, where your opponent is heavily buffed with various buffs and has magic immunity, such as Bristleback, or against supports that buy Aeon Disc, which will be rendered obsolete when the target is being nullified.

However, the former effect, Mute, was a much powerful counter when it prevented the target from using active items. For instance, a Hurricane Pike can still be used to further the distance from a Nullifier user as an escape tool.

Is it worth buying the Nullifier in Dota 2 Patch 7.35?

Ranking as the 151st among the most popular items, it’s clear that Nullifier isn’t as popular as it once was.

This has much to do with its high cost to buy, at 4375 gold, with very minimal stats gain. Purchasing the item just to use Nullify, just isn’t worth the value and gold, when there are much better late game items to offer better utility and stats.

Many late game carry items, such as Manta Style, Linkens Sphere, Silver Edge, and even a cheap Blink Dagger can disjoint the Nullifier’s projectile. Albeit the speed of Nullifier’s projectile is now faster at 1800 ms (from 1100 ms previously) as of Dota 2 patch 7.36.

In hindsight, it’s now merely an item that position-5 hard support players fear, because there aren’t any reliable forms of counter against Nullifier for us. Even when the Nullifier is effective at catching hard support heroes, it’s not a loss because the Nullifier owner essentially invested in an item just to eliminate the lowest-value player in the game.

Surely most hard support players would gladly take the blunt of a Nullifier, if it means their carry allies don’t.
