Wraith King is a strength hero that can be played as a safe lane carry. Here are the areas in which he excels:

  • He can deal up to 330 magical damage to an enemy, stun him for 2 seconds and slow his movement speed by 20% for another 2 seconds, using his Wraithfire Blast ability.
  • He and every allied unit around him lifesteals for up to 30% of their damage, thanks to his Vampiric Aura ability.
  • He has a 9%/11%/13%/15% chance to deal 300% damage with his attacks, thanks to his Mortal Strike ability. Each time he kills a non-hero unit by landing a critical strike on it, he gains one charge that can be used at any time to create a Skeleton. A total number of 4/5/6/7 charges can be stored.
  • He can reincarnate at full HP after he dies thanks to his Reincarnate ability.

What Items to build on Wraith King

Wraith King’s item build should be centered around mobility, durability and damage output. Here are some of the most important items you should consider buying if you’re climbing Dota 2 ranks:

  • Power Treads: they give you excellent stats and attack speed.
  • Stout Shield: gives you decent protection in the early stages of the game.
  • Quelling Blade: this will improve your last hitting and your farming speed after the laning phase.
  • Magic Wand: this is a good early game item on any hero.
  • Armlet of Mordiggian: gives you HP regeneration, damage and armor. Thanks to its active ability, which can be toggled, it makes you much more survivable and gives you a great power boost.
  • Blade Mail: gives you good damage, armor, mana and the ability to reflect damage back at your enemies for 4.5 seconds.
  • Blink Dagger: can help you close the distance when fighting against heroes that like to attack and use spells from afar.
  • Radiance: greatly speeds up your farm and allows you to deal a lot of AoE damage in team fights.
  • Desolator: this is often one of the first damages item you should build on the hero.
  • Black King Bar: if you’re facing a team that has a lot of disables and magical damage, you should buy this item somewhere around the 25-35 minutes mark, if you want to be able to fight efficiently.
  • Battle Fury: this item is good when facing illusion based heroes like Phantom Lancer, Naga Siren and Terrorblade, because it makes your basic attacks do cleave damage.
  • Mjolnir: this is another item that greatly speeds up your farm, improves your damage output and helps you deal with illusion based heroes.
  • Assault Cuirass: a very good choice for durability, attack speed, armor reduction and team-fighting (due to the Assault Aura).

Wraith King Abilities Explained

Wraithfire Blast

Deals 330 magical damage to a target, stuns it for 2 seconds and the slows its movement speed by 20% for another 2 seconds.

Vampiric Aura

Gives you and nearby allies 15%/20%/25%/30% lifesteal.

Mortal Strike

Gives you a 9%/11%/13%/15% chance to deal 300% damage with your basic attacks. If you kill a non-hero unit with a Mortal Strike attack, you gain one charge that can be used to create a Skeleton. A total number of 4/5/6/7 charges can be stored. When using charges, you are using all of them at once. Each Skeleton you summon is under your direct control and has 350 HP and 38 attack damage.

Reincarnation

When you die, all enemies in a 900 radius have their attack and movement speed slowed by 75/75% for 5 seconds. After a 3 seconds delay, you come back to life at full HP. Even the best Dota 2 players will often struggle to counter this ability.

Choose the Correct Wraith King Talents

  • +20 attack speed / +40 Wraithfire Blast DPS (80 damage in total) – The first talent is generally more useful and will allow you to farm faster.
  • +5 max Skeletons / +15 strength – The strength talent is much more reliable.
  • +30 Skeletons attack damage / no Reincarnation mana cost – The second option is almost always better.
  • Reincarnation casts Wraithfire Blast / +25% Vampiric Aura lifesteal – If you have multiple right clicking heroes in your lineup that can really benefit from your Vampiric Aura, take the second talent. Otherwise take the first.

Skill build order

When playing Wraith King, you generally maximize Wraithfire Blast first, Mortal Strike second and then Vampiric Aura last. At level 7 you should have a 4-1-1-1 build. Afterwards you maximize the 2 remaining abilities in the order mentioned above, putting points in your ultimate and taking talents whenever you can.

When to pick the hero

Wraith King is a good pick whenever you want to have a carry that can survive a very powerful enemy initiation. Because he has Reincarnation, he can afford to die once and then with assistance from his teammates, turn the fight around. This means he’s also often picked during Dota 2 The International events.

Shrug off blows and carry your team

Wraith King is a durable carry that can make his entire team stronger thanks to his Vampiric Aura and the Reincarnation debuff he places on his enemies. If you’re facing a lineup with a lot of burst damage, Wraith King may be just the hero you need to succeed.
