What Weapons Are Still Hitscan in Fortnite?
What Fortnite hitscan weapons do we still have? At one point, pretty much everything outside of snipers was hitscan but that changed in Chapter 5. We’ve now got to deal with bullet drop and other added mechanics. It has been a controversial change, but we do still have a handful of Fortnite hitscan weapons and they could be coming back in the future.
These are the Fortnite hitscan weapons that are still in the game and why some players think they might be coming back soon.

All Current Fortnite Scan Weapons
Most of the weapons in Fortnite seasons past Chapter 5 Season 1 have been projectile. However, there are a handful of close-range and unique weapons which are still hitscan. These are the current Fortnite Hitscan weapons:
- Sovereign Shotgun
- Gatekeeper Shotgun
- Hammer Pump Shotgun
That’s it! Everything else is projectile, although there is variety in the projectiles. SMGs for example use very fast-moving projectiles that can feel like Hitscan. This was a bit more exploitable early in the Chapter where mods were more powerful. Our current batch isn’t really capable of being more than SMGs. ARs and longer-range weapons are all hard projectiles too, even the energy-based Stark Rifle re-enabled this season.
Why Did it Switch over?
Those are the current Fortnite hitscan weapons, but there’s a lot more than that which used to be hitscan. Before Chapter 5, ARs were hitscan as was pretty everything except snipers and DMRs. Why did Epic change it?
No official reason was given in Chapter 5, beyond adding complexity to the gunplay. However, we can look at the main thing we know about balancing changes in Chapter 5 compared to earlier, Zero Build.

When it first launched in Chapter 3, it wasn’t supposed to be permanent. Epic works ahead of time for Fortnite seasons. Chapter 4 had Zero Build imposed upon it. While it was a year old, the map, seasons, and content were still all designed for builds. Look no further than that map’s Jungle death trap for confirmation of that.
We know that Chapter 5 in Fortnite is the first designed with both Builds and Zero Builds in mind. If you’re getting beamed by a hitscan weapon, you build. You can’t in Zero. The mode kind of breaks the rock-paper-scissors set-up of Fortnite with Builds, weapons, and mobility. Removing hitscan for most mid-range weapons does fix that flaw.
If you’re getting absolutely beamed at the mid-range (where boxing typically saves you) hitscan now makes that harder. You can burn mobility and the enemy tracking you is much harder. Projectile wapons might be frustrating for Builds players, but it’s definitely made the game more Zero-friendly. However, Fortnite Hitscan weapons might be coming back.
If Fortnite Hitscan Weapons Coming Back?
We have a few reasons to think Fortnite hitscan weapons might be back for Chapter 6. Starting with some recent surveys they’ve put out, which have heavily asked about Hitscan returning. With the clear outcry against ditching hitscan, it seems inevitable that the feature will return in the future.
Hopefully, we get the hitscan weapons back in Chapter 6, but it hasn’t shown up in Fortntie leaks yet. Although, metas like C5 S4’s with so many Hover Jets definitely show hitscan probably would have been a better for this Chapter too.
