What’s New in Fortnite Season 3 Chapter 5?
A new season of Fortnite is finally here, Season 3 Chapter 5! This is one of our biggest updates to date. There are new POIs, a new biome, fresh weapons, everything has changed with the game. The Battle Royale has been taken over by a sandy wasteland for this season. We’ve had some more subtle changes too though.
What can we expect in Fortnite Season 3 Chapter 5? We’ve got the full patch notes and everything that’s changed with the latest season.
What’s New in Fortnite Season 3 Chapter 5’s Update?
As we saw in the mini-event before the season began, a sandstorm has wrecked the island. This has left us with a post-apocalyptic map for this season. There are weapons to match and new features like weapon mods (which we’ve been seeing in Fortnite leaks for years at this point!).
These are the big changes in Fortnite Season 3 Chapter 5:
New POIs in the Wasteland

Source: Epic Games
The map has had a big revamp with the latest update. The big change is with a new biome. There’s a dusty area replacing one part of the map with all the new content. There’s a handful of full new POIs here too. These are:
- Redline Rig – An industrial area
- Nitrodome – Race-Track, Gladiator arena, kind of mish mash.
- Brutal Beachead – The Shark has returned, but is now grounded as a desert wasteland
- Sandy Steppes – A revamp for Snooty Steppes
Those are the new POIs. We’ve got more minor changes all throughout the map though.
Nitro

Source: Epic Games
The big new mechanic for Fortnite Season 3 Chapter 5 is Nitro! This is a mechanic focused on speed and explosives! It’s similar to the chili effects we’ve had in the past, but now for people and vehicles.
Nitro is accessible in a handful of ways. There’s the Nitro Splash, a throwable item that gives the effect. There are barrels that work like slurp barrels. Then there’s the medallion that gives the effect permanently. What exactly does the effect do though? It depends on if it’s applied to a car or a person:
Effects on a Car
- Faster Speed
- Ramming does more damage and Knockback
- Use less fuel
- Buffs weapon mods on vehicles
Effects on a Player
- Faster movement speed
- Bash through builds and knockback players while running
- Use less stamina
- Reload faster
- No Fall Damage
These are pretty effective buffs in quite a few ways. We’ll likely see these get used in pretty creative ways across the season. The buffs might be especially interesting for Fortnite esports tournaments later this season.
New Items In Fortnite Season 3 Chapter 5
Nitro Fists

It’s not all about cars in Fortnite Season 3 Chapter 5. There are quite a few new items, like the Nitro Fists. These are robotic fists you can use to do melee damage or fire yourself through the air.
Vehicle Mods

Source: Epic Games
Weapon mods have been the headline for Fortnite Chapter 5 as a whole, but vehicle mods have finally been added this season. These are ways to customize any vehicle you find. There’s a handful of different vehicle mods you can now put on any car you find:
- Machine Gun – A turret you can attach to a car
- Grenade Launcher – A turret to launch grenades
- Spikes Bumper – A bumper that deals extra damage
- Cow Catcher – A returning mod, that lets you demolish builds and players
- Bulletproof Tyres – You can’t pop car tyres anymore
- Off-road Tires – You can drive off-road with these
SUV Skins
All Chapter, we’ve seen cars get more customizable thanks to new skins. This is now extended to SUVs too. Epic will be selling Fortnite skins for these Jeeps too. Nice if you’re particularly interested in seeing more personality in your cars.
Battle Bus is Back

Source: Epic Games
The Bus drops every player off at the start of the game, but in a few select seasons we’ve been able to drive it as a souped-up vehicle. The Battle Bus is back in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3. To get inside it though, you’ll need to take out a squad of NPCs occupying the bus first.
Boom Bolt
A fresh weapon here is a crossbow. This fires explosive rounds which should be good at taking out the newly powered up cars. It’s mod-able too so it has some utility for normal gunfights too.

New Bosses in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3
As is customary at this point, there’s a fresh batch of bosses on the map this season. Each drops a new medallion along with a Mythic weapon. These are all of the bosses in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3:
- Machinist (Redline Rig)
- Ringmaster (Nitrodome)
- Megalo Don (brutal Beachead)
New Items
Those are the biggest changes in Fortnite Season 3 Chapter 5. There’s a bit more in the loot pool that’s been altered though, like new consumables:
- Nuka Cols – New med consumable from the Fortnite X Fallout crossover
- King Cacti – A desert item that heals shield
Those are the big changes in the Fortnite Season 3 Chapter 5 update. There are a few other features like a fresh Battle Pass too. There’s some really exciting stuff to jump into with this new season.
