STW stands for Save the World. It’s not some vague idea about what you should be doing in some game modes. It’s the original game mode for Fortnite.
Back before Fortnite Battle Royale existed, Save the World was Fortnite. It was originally just called Fortnite. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the reasons behind why is Fortnite called Fortnite, since Save the World is a bit more focused on building actual forts the nighttime cycle. STW was a second title added on later.
After a little while of Battle Royale growing in popularity, Epic added the Save the World part to the original game’s title. To better clear up which game was which. Over time, Fortnite has come to refer more to the Battle Royale than STW even. Although, its player base isn’t exactly happy about this.
