Fortnite Release Date: When Did Fortnite Come Out?

Fortnite has gone from early access to being a central pillar of gaming. It seems like it’s been around forever. There was a time when Fortnite was a brand new title, though, one that players had to give a chance to. A game that wasn’t sure to keep running, let alone be a runaway success like this. When did Fortnite come out, and when did the game make this leap up to its current mega-title popularity?

There are now loads of Fortnite seasons, and many millions of players have spent so much time on Fortnite. To some, Fortnite might have been released in Chapter 1, but they got involved only in Chapters 2 or 3, or even later at this point! But when did Fortnite come out, and how long has the game been up and running?

If you’re wondering how long Fortnite has been out, it does vary a bit. The game wasn’t always a huge metaverse. It wasn’t always even a Battle Royale! The way that the game has grown means there are a few different release dates, but the answer to what year did Fortnite come out is pretty simple.

When Did Fortnite Come Out?

The answer varies on which part of Fortnite you’re asking about! The Battle Royale that makes up the bulk of the latest Fortnite news isn’t the original game. As most probably know, the game originated with Save the World, the original game built around forts. Battle Royale came later.

Fortnite released on July 25, 2017. This is when the original game launched in early access as a horde PVE game. The next question is: How long has Fortnite been a Battle Royale? That side of the game came later when Epic Games decided to jump in on the growing genre. Little did anyone know how big this title would become, completely eclipsing the original Save the World.

When Fortnite Became a Battle Royale

If you’re wondering how long has Fortnite been out, specifically the Battle Royale, it’s since September 26, 2017.

This is just a few months after the original came out. Players didn’t have all that long with the title before we got our 100-player game mode.

The title did remain in Early Access for quite a while though. The Early Access title became quite the joke after a while as the game moved from form to form with constant updates, never quite coming to full release. Fortnite had a lifespan that would dwarf most games, even Live Service games, yet never was actually published. Eventually, Epic got sick of the joke and we did lose the early access label! Although some still miss the days when Fortnite was a bit rougher around the edges, as we see with the boosts in Fortnite player count in OG.

Eventually, Fortnite came out of early access on June 29, 2020. This also coincided with the original game mode, now redubbed Save the World, stopping receiving major updates. While this was a disappointment to a lot of fans, the Battle Royale has had near-constant updates. It’s even received a ton of expansions like Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, Festival, and Reload.

While the answer to when did Fortnite come out is earlier, it’s a bit later for the other modes. If you mean full release, it’s been out since 2020! However, the game’s early access was hardly an early beta. 2017 is the better answer to what year did Fortnite come out.

The Fortnite Future is Bright

The title has gone through four Chapters and a lot of seasons in that time. It’s only been out around eight years, but the game still feels fresh thanks to the near-constant updates. We’re even still seeing the game  grow massively. Like the later Chapter 5 addition of Fall Guys. Who knows where Fortntie will stop growing and it’ll finally feel like everything that’s getting released has been.
