Fortnite as a Battle Royale and a platform has become one of the most important titles in gaming history. With multiple game modes, an entire engine to play with for creation, and modes without building, the name can seem like a bit of a throwback these days! The title has evolved tons but is still carries a name that has more to do with its original defense and horde mode though. So why is Fortnite called Fortnite?
There are a few reasons behind the titling that are worth thinking about. There’s the base pun. However, half of the meaning behind that pun is referencing game mechanics which have never been relevant to the Battle Royale. Let alone the changes to the building mechanics since older seasons of Fortnite. If you want to know why is Fortnite called Fortnite, this is where the name comes from and what it means.
Fortnite first launched in 2017, but the game originated as something different. While it’s now dubbed Fortnite Save the World, originally there wasn’t a Battle Royale. The game was simply Fortnite. The game’s name was a pun.
The word fortnight means two weeks. It’s a term more in use in British English, where it’s quite common. However, Fortnite’s international appeal sometimes means that gets lost. The game’s title is a deliberate pun on that word, instead pushing together two words related to gameplay, Fort and the Night.
Forts have an obvious meaning to why Fortnite is called Fortnite. Players have to build forts. In Save the World the building is a lot more focused on actually putting up Forts, not just cranking 90s and boxes like we see the best Fortnite players doing.
Save the World’s original concept involved holding zombies off for 14 days, and nights. Hence why is Fortnite called Fortnite? It’s a minor pun and a bit of wordplay, but that’s where the title got its name.
Over the years, Fortnite has become much more than that simple defense game. It can be easy to forget why Fortnite is called Fortnite, that’s the meaning behind the term though.
The question of why Fortnite is called Fortnite might be more common as the game has grown. Especially since the Chapter 5 updates.
Loading the game up now, you could play a Lego Minecraft-like game, a racing game, any number of crazy creative experiences, and even Fall Guys. None of this involves anything like the original premise of building forts to last the night!

Increasingly, Fortnite’s name might not be immediately obvious to players. Although, Fortnite as a brand is pretty well known. People might not know all of the details, but they’ve probably heard of it. Even as Fortnite embraces this wider definition, keeping the name makes more sense than just rebranding Battle Royale as Fortnite. Those core games are still what people think of as Fortnite.
Fortnight, is a term which can be used to mean two weeks. However, it’s possible the game has overtaken the word it’s a play on for a lot of the world.
A lot of people don’t seem to know what a fortnight is, and mainly think of the game when they hear it! Even in Fortnite isn’t really about forts and lasting through the night anymore, the name is synonymous with the Battle Royale.
