Ubisoft Says ‘Any Franchise’ Could End Up With An XDefiant Faction’

XDefiant was released globally on May 21 to a stellar reception, with hundreds of thousands of players pouring into the free-to-play FPS ecosystem. It took a fair while for XDefiant to finally be released, given that it was pushed back several times, but now that it’s here, fans are enjoying it. Ubisoft recently addressed the nature of the ‘faction system’ in XDefiant, stressing that any Ubisoft title could contribute a new group of operators to the sensational first-person shooter.

The unique draw of XDefiant is that every faction is taken from a Ubisoft franchise. So far, we’ve seen the likes of Splinter Cell, The Division, and Far Cry all surface in the shooter with playable characters created from their respective universes. On the topic of what comes next in XDefiant, Ubisoft recently confirmed that no game is off the table – any franchise could end up with a faction in XDefiant.

This Could Be Interesting

The most recent addition to XDefiant was the GSK faction, being pulled in from Rainbow Six Siege. As Ubisoft’s flagship paid-for FPS title and a leading esports game, it made so much sense for Rainbow Six Siege to be represented in XDefiant – and that’s what has happened in the game’s first season. It has already been confirmed somewhat that one of the next factions will be based on Assassin’s Creed, which just about writes itself.

However, Ubisoft’s lengthy catalogue of titles that have surfaced over the last twenty or thirty years presents a phenomenal opportunity. Per the game’s executive producer, Mark Rubin, ‘there really isn’t anything off the table’, and as long as it makes sense and can be worked competitively, it could surface in XDefiant. That means that games like Raving Rabbids, Skull & Bones, Just Dance, and even Star Wars Outlaws could find themselves being brought into XDefiant as a new faction.

Eventually, Ubisoft will run dry on the franchise front, but thanks to the longevity of some games, there are no limits to the number of factions that could be introduced to XDefiant. For instance, Far Cry alone has a lengthy series comprised of around eight major releases, each of which boasts unique factions.

I’d love to run around XDefiant’s maps as a Rabbid, but that’s just me.
