How to romance in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Romance in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth can be difficult.
First things first, you need to know how to track your relationship with your companions. You can do this by holding L1 while exploring. This will show a smiley face icon above your companions’ heads.
The worst is grey, while the best is light blue, and this will change as you improve your relationship. But how do you actually improve these smiley faces? There are a few ways to do so:
Missable Events
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth features numerous missable events over the course of the game that can provide a relationship boost for your romance. These are:
- Chapter 4: Reach 100,000 score or higher in the Junon Parade for a boost with Tifa and Aerith.
- Chapter 5: Win the Queen’s Blood Tournament for a boost with Red XIII.
- Chapter 6: Get a boost with Tifa or Aerith by making sure they wear the same beachwear as Cloud.
- Chapter 6: Get a boost with either Tifa and Red XIII or Aerith and Barret by choosing them to help at the beach.
- Chapter 6: Compliment Yuffie’s beachwear at Costa del Sol for a relationship boost with her.
- Chapter 7: Switch the tracks on the rails, while shooting all the crates possible for a boost with Yuffie and Barret.
Synergy Skills and Abilities
While in battle, you can complete Synergy Skills and Abilities which are unlocked with skill points. You can execute both of these with a romance option, and you’ll gain a relationship boost the first time you do so. Easy!
Side Quests

While adventuring through towns, make sure to pick up Odd Jobs. These essentially operate as side quests, and you can complete them with your Final Fantasy VII Rebirth romance options. You’ll gain a relationship boost every time you complete an Odd Job with your romance partner, so make sure they’re by your side!
Main Quests
As you progress through Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, many of the game’s main story missions will impact your relationship with your romance partner. Like the side quests, make sure they’re with you during these missions.
Personal Conversations
One of the biggest ways to build your romance in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is via your dialogue choices. When speaking to your companions, each choice will have an under-the-hood “star” value. 1 star is the worst, while 3 is the best. Sadly, the game doesn’t tell you which is which, but it shouldn’t be too difficult for you to figure out. Just side with your relationship partner at every turn and make them feel validated during dialogue, and you shouldn’t have too many issues making this work.
Gold Saucer dates

The Golden Saucer dates are the culmination of your Final Fantasy VII romance. When you’ve maxed out your relationship with your partner, you can head to the Golden Saucer in Chapter 12 for an intimate date. There’s no “how-to” here – just enjoy the sweet cutscene between you and your partner. The Golden Saucer dates are what you’ve been working toward across the entire game, with characters opening up and showing themselves as more vulnerable than ever.
