How to get Pokéballs in Pokémon GO

Since there is no way to catch anything without them, it is imperative for trainers to know how to get Pokéballs in Pokémon GO. There are three levels: Pokéballs, Great Balls and Ultra Balls. Each level makes it easier to catch a Pokémon, but it is always important to have the first level. You generally don’t want to waste an Ultra Ball on a 36 CP Zigzagoon, for example. Having the lowest level is vital to your gameplay.

Fortunately, they’re not that hard to come by. They’re the most common ball and probably the most common item overall. If you run out, don’t fret: there are several ways to get them. Here’s what you can do.

How to get Pokéballs in Pokémon GO

Pokéballs primarily come from spinning Pokéstops and gyms. If you have item space available and you spin a Pokéstop, most of the rewards will be the classic red ball. Other items, such as Great Balls, revives, potions and more, can come out of a stop, but the majority will be exactly what you need here. If there’s a Pokéstop nearby, head to it to spin and fill back up your Pokéball storage.

A second option if you do not have a stop or gym nearby is to open gifts from friends. Once again, the majority of the items you get in a gift will more often than not be Pokéballs. As long as you have item space, you can open gifts and earn the rewards. If gifts give you items you don’t need, you can always delete them and open more to try and get Pokéballs (this logic applies with Pokéstops as well). Some gifts can give 10 of them at one time.

Pokéballs can come from a lot of different sources

In the Shop every single day, there is a free daily box. This carries a few items, usually around three or four in total. Most of the time, a few original balls will be available in this box. If so, you can redeem it and take those. It’s a very slow way of building up your inventory, but it will help in a bind. On that same note, there are often promotional boxes available. These can sometimes have 50 or more Pokéballs. Unfortunately, these do cost Pokémon coins. Furthermore, you can always just buy the item from the Shop straightaway.

Level up and play more to earn Pokéballs

Every time you level up in Pokémon GO, you receive more items. Most of the time, this comes in the form of revives and other items, but Pokéballs come, too. Here’s what you can get at each level:

  1. N/A
  2. 10 balls
  3. 15 balls
  4. 15 balls
  5. 20 Pokéballs
  6. Additional 15 Pokéballs
  7. 15 balls
  8. Another 15 balls
  9. 15 balls
  10. 20 Pokéballs
  11. 15 Pokéballs

From level 12 on, you get Great Balls and then Ultra Balls, which are also very helpful to have. Walking a lot in a given week also grants Pokéballs. As long as you walk 5km in a week (or a little over three miles), you will earn 20 Pokéballs every Monday. There are rewards that stack for other thresholds of walking, but they don’t include any more regular balls.

Many times, a Field, Special or Timed Research will grant Pokéballs. These usually come in some sort of bulk, too. Be sure to check all your available tasks and try to complete them as soon as possible to reap the Pokéball reward.

The Daily Incense also grants 30 Pokéballs upon use. The idea is so that you can easily catch everything that spawns on it while you walk, but there’s no requirement to catch a single thing. You can just pop the incense and gain the 30 balls and move on.

For now, those are the only methods of getting Pokéballs in Pokémon GO.
