Jayce is an AD Top and Mid Laner that benefits from lethality items to output the maximum amount of damage.
Jayce is unique in the sense he has two ability kits: his melee form and his ranged form. Both sets of abilities differ depending on the form you select through Jayce’s Ultimate.
Most of his abilities are physical damage, but a couple do Magic Damage, although there is no need to build any AP on Jayce, since the biggest damage output comes with using AD items.

- Hextech Capacitor (Passive): Jayce can switch between his ranged and melee forms. When he does so, he gains movement speed for 0.75 seconds.
Melee form (Mercury Hammer):
- To The Skies! (Q): Jayce leaps to the selected target, dealing phyiscal damage and slowing them for a duration.
- Lightning Field (W): Auto attacks grant Jayce mana. When active, Jayce creates an electric field that deals Magic Damage over 4 seconds.
- Thundering Blow (E): Jayce knocks back his opponent, dealing max health magic damage.
Ranged Form (Mercury Cannon):
- Shock Blast (Q): Jayce fires a ball of electricity that deals physical damage to the first enemy hit and all surrounding enemies. This ability moves faster if put through the Acceleration Gate.
- Hyper Charge (W): Jayce’s auto attacks deal extra physical damage while gaining more attack speed when active.
- Acceleration Gate (E): Jayce deploys a gate that grants extra movement speed for a short duration. Shock Blast can be sent through the gate to accelerate the blast and deal more damage.
- Ultimate (R): Jayce can alternate between Mercury Hammer and Mercury Cannon, changing from a ranged champion to a melee champion. Both kits have unique abilities that primarily deal physical damage.
Since all of Jayce’s kit depends entirely on AD, there’s no reason to even consider playing him AP. His only source of magic damage output is through his Lightning Field (W-melee form). You should just go for the classic AD itemization, no need for fooling around with any AP items.
