In most cases, Volibear is played as an AD Tank in League of Legends. However, he has a couple of abilities that deal Magic Damage. Volibear is also a fighter, and he needs to be on top of the enemy champion to do damage. In the current patch, Volibear players should be looking to build items like Sundered Sky, which gives both attack damage and solid health.
With Volibear healing through his W, this goes well with the passive on Sundered Sky, which grants excess healing as bonus health, making him a pain to deal with. From there, you should primarily build tank items that benefit both Magic Damage and Attack Damage.
Here are Volibear abilities in League of Legends:
- The Relentless Storm (Passive): Whenever Volibear uses his auto attack on a minion, monster, or champion, he stacks relentless storm. His auto-attacks and abilities grant Attack Speed, and when fully stacked it causes his Attacks to deal bonus magic damage to nearby enemies.
- Thundering Smash (Q): Volibear becomes ghosted for 4 seconds, and his next auto-attack is empowered, dealing bonus Physical Damage. Thundering Smash also stuns the desired target in place for 1 second.
- Frenzied Maul (W): When Frenzied Maul is active, Volibear can strike the enemy target, dealing Physical Damage and applying 100% effective on-hit effects. During this time, the enemy is marked as wounded. When an enemy is wounded, Volibear’s W deals 50% more damage while also healing him.
- Sky Splitter (E): Volibear summons a lightning bolt at a target location for two seconds. If he is in the target area, Volibear gains a shield and adds Ability Power for that duration. The lightning bolt also deals Magic Damage and slows the enemy for a short duration.
- Stormbringer (R): Voli leaps to the selected target area, granting displacement immunity. During his ultimate, Volibear gains ghosting, added health, a longer attack range, a buff to Frenzied Maul, and is larger in size. Stormbringer also disables enemy turrets if they are within the ultimate location. This ultimate lasts for 12 seconds.
Some players enjoy experimenting with some off-meta builds, playing Volibear hybrid AP/AttackSpeed, we think he thrives best as Tank/Off-tank AD champion.
