LCK Summer Week 4 – was the EWC just a hiccup?

The LCK went on a one-week break as T1 and Gen.G took part in the Esports World Cup. While T1 was able to come out victorious, Gen.G’s loss against Top Esports in the quarterfinals came to everyone’s surprise. After achieving a 24-win streak, no one expected Gen.G to drop in the first series in Saudi Arabia.

Coming back to the LCK, there were quite a few doubts regarding their form, but they were able to get it all together quite quickly against Kwangdong Freecs, who they beat with a clean 2-0. Gen.G is yet to be beaten once in the LCK summer regular split, as they are currently on a 14-0 match record.

DK is currently second in the standings and the team has looked much better compared to the spring split. Despite not having some of the cleanest series, they only lost to T1 so far. While Gen.G may look like favorites, we know that ShowMaker is the type of player who can pull off magic things, especially given he’s against his former teammate Canyon.

Gen.G vs DK – Breakdown of the series

With the return to a more traditional mid-bot carry duo setup, DK has been finding more success. Lucid has also stepped up compared to spring, making him a much more consistent player. With so many strong jungle picks open, I think the focus will be put on Lucid and Canyon to dictate the pace of the game.

It’s clear that the mid lane (Tristana, Corki, Azir) and top lane (Rumble, Skarner, Gnar) picks will also be contested so it will ultimately come down to who gets a better draft. In most scenarios, I would still expect Gen.G to win but I highly doubt it will be a walk in the park. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see DK hand Gen.G their first loss of the split.
