LoL Esports World Cup 2024 – an eight-team tournament
Following the end of the Mid-Season Invitational in Chengdu, League of Legends will move to the Middle East in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with the Esports World Cup. In what should be one of the biggest esports events of all time, the best teams from the major regions will be facing off for the 1 million dollar prize pool.
The tournament will span just five days but will still give League of Legends teams the chance to prove their worth on the international stage once again.
Invited teams and format explained
Unlike the Mid-Season Invitational, only the four major regions were invited to the LoL Esports World Cup tournament. The top two seeds from spring were considered, therefore the participants are:
Gen.G
T1
BLG
Top Esports
G2 Esports
Fnatic
Team Liquid
FlyQuest
These are the same squads that were part of the Mid-Season Invitational, making it essentially a rematch for all those teams. Aside from FlyQuest, all other seven teams were part of the top 8 that took part in the playoff stage.
That said, there will be no double elimination bracket this time around. The eight teams will be seeded into a single elimination bracket, with Bo3 matches for the quarterfinals and semifinals. Only the final, instead, will be a full Bo5. It’s still unclear how the teams will be seeded into the bracket.
Predictions
Given the short amount of time that has passed since the end of MSI, the LoL Esports World Cup shouldn’t have much difference in how teams are expected to perform. Gen.G and BLG will continue to be the front runners, with T1 and G2 following closely.
Team Liquid, Fnatic, and Top Esports can definitely make the upsets happen while FlyQuest is probably the one with the biggest question marks since they haven’t had the chance to play against the best teams in the world.
