What was the format of the MLBB M6 Championship 2024?

The MLBB M6 Championship 2024 was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from Nov. 21 to Dec. 15. The tournament comprised the top 23 teams worldwide from the various regional leagues from the MLBB Esports Ecosystem. The prize pool increased in 2024 from $900,000 to $1,000,000. The tournament was divided into 3 phases:

  • Wild Card Stage
  • Swiss Stage
  • Knockout Stage

Let us look at the format for each MLBB M6 Championship 2024 stage.

The Wild Card Stage

  • The first phase of the tournament was the Wild Card Stage. Within this, eight teams were split into two groups.
  • The teams competed in a single round-robin format with each match being a B03. The top team from each group then advanced to the second phase of the Wild Card Stage.
  • The two teams faced off in a best-of-5 series in the second phase. The winner of this match qualified for the M6 Swiss Stage.

The Swiss Stage

  • The second phase of the tournament was the newly introduced and exciting Swiss Stage. In this phase, the top 16 teams faced off against each other.
  • Similar to other esports titles that incorporated the Swiss stage format, teams needed to win three matches to qualify for the next phase of the event.
  • The first two matches of each team were a B01 series. Following this, the teams that had won 2 games each played decider matches, which were a B03 series.
  • Teams that won this series qualified for the tournament’s knockout stage. Teams that lost their first B03 played another B03 match to see which teams qualified further.
  • By the end of the Swiss Stage, the top 8 teams qualified for the knockout stage. The remaining eight teams, on the other hand, were eliminated from the tournament. The Knockout Stage

The final stage of the MLBB M6 Championship 2024 was the knockout stage. Within this, the top 8 teams played in a double bracket format to see which team qualified for the Grand Finals.

Each team’s first match within this phase was a B03. Following this, all the remaining matches were a B05, with the Grand Finals being a B07.

Fnatic ONIC, from the Philippines, emerged as the world champion after showcasing its dominance in the event. The team’s key player, Kelra, was the FMVP, thanks to his incredible performance against Team Liquid in the Grand Finals. Fnatic ONIC outplayed Team Liquid in the Grand Finals with a scoreline of 4-1.

Benefits of the Swiss Stage format in the MLBB M6 World Championship

It was great to see MOONTON implementing new changes to the M6 World Championship, making it more exciting for fans. This time, the Swiss Stage ensured that there was no luck-based group draw. As a result, there weren’t any ‘group-of-death,’ ensuring all teams had an even chance to qualify for the Playoffs.

Additionally, this format also ensured that some fan favorite teams faced off earlier in the tournament, bringing in more viewership and excitement to the tournament.
