Overwatch 2 is currently experimenting with a few moves to revitalize the title. Like trailing original team sizes. Anyone hoping that this would mean a return to more classic Overwatch gameplay is in luck though. Overwatch Classic has just been announced.
First teased a few days ago, Blizzard has now confirmed Overwatch Classic is coming this week! A new mode which is going to recreate the original Overwatch experience. Players don’t need to wait until the 6 v 6 trials to test this back out. Although, it’s doing more than just switching up the team size.
Overwatch Classic is going to be a complete re-visit of the game’s opening meta. Complete with a lack of features like roles, and the balance being reverted back. When can you get involved?
A new classic mode of Overwatch is coming to the game, for a limited four-week period. This will be a direct re-creation of the game’s first meta. Complete with fewer heroes and a different balance. Kind of like the popular Fortnite OG event.

Overwatch has had so much development over the years, it’ll be fun to see how the modern OW player base deals with the original version of the game. Back when players could pick any hero, without being tied to a more stable team format. Along with a simpler system for most heroes, before they were balanced more exactly to support years of esports events.
Overwatch Classic will be an interesting change. It’s not just bringing back the popular form of the game first seen in the Overwatch League, but taking it back to its launch patch. When a lot of the polish and different features. A 21-hero game with just 12 maps to choose from.
One major change between modern Overwatch and this mode is not restricting players’ hero choice. You can a whole team of one roll if you really want to. Along with the original version of heroes, like Mercy’s entire team revive that was removed.
The game mode is sure to bring back some lapsed players of the game but how long will it be back for? It’s beginning on November 12th and running through until December 2nd. This will be a few weeks long, not a permanent return to the past.
This game mode will likely see higher player numbers during its run. After that though we’ve got some trials for new formats for the game too when we move on to the next season.
