The Sony PlayStation 5 was the most popular console in the US last month. According to figures from the NPD group, the PS5 was the best-selling console in terms of dollar sales and sold units for the five-week period between August 27 to October 1.
The PS5 has been notoriously difficult to buy for over a year after its launch in November 2020. Sony has had to battle supply chain issues, such as chip shortages, as well as the logistical difficulties posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recently, however, they’ve increased shipments to the United States by 400% from last year, according to stats shared by Senior analyst at MST Financial David Gibson. Gibson notes that the huge spike in the number of units being shipped is partly to prepare for the launch of God of War: Ragnarok’s November 9.

Despite all the new games, total video game content sales went down by 7% in September compared to previous year. The subscription market did improve though, as well as hardware spending now that the PS5 availability issues have been sorted.
It’s been a relatively slow year without many major game releases, but September saw five new games ranking among the top 10 best-sellers in the US. FIFA 23 tops the charts despite its release so late in the month.
Madden NFL is the next on the list. It was the best-seller in August following its release, and has now slipped down to second place after FIFA. Four out of the top six best-sellers in the US are all new releases – Madden NFL is followed by the latest title in the massively popular NBA series, NBA 2K23, which was released in the first week of September.
The remake of The Last Of Us Part I was popularly received as well, and it is the fourth-best seller on the PS5. Speaking of reboots, Saints Row is the next on the list. The game’s release date was pushed back by six months from the originally planned date in February, the additional development time being spent on optimization – but judging by its reception, the wait was worth it. Its sales made way for newer releases, slipping down to number six from second place last month.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, featuring thirteen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video games developed by Konami between 1989 and 1994, came out at the end of August to much critical acclaim.
Elden Ring remains the best-seller of 2022 and it continues in the top ten for September as well, slipping down one place to number seven from last month. Forbidden West, the second iteration of the massively popular Horizon series features on the charts months after its release back in February.
