How to beat Giovanni in Pokémon GO version
Giovanni Pokémon GO is the top boss that anyone in the game will face. Team GO Rocket is the villain of the game (if there truly is one) and Giovanni is their shadowy, mysterious leader. The grunts obey Leaders Arlo, Cliff and Sierra. Those three bow to Giovanni, though. He is the ultimate leader and the hardest battle most trainers will ever face. It is imperative to have the right counters. Here’s how to beat Giovanni Pokémon GO.
Beat Giovanni Pokémon GO: How to take down the top dog
Giovanni always starts with a Persian, which is a Normal-type Pokémon. That means you must have a very strong Fighting-type in your party. You should really only have one because the others he has will most likely not be weak to Fighting, rendering it useless on the second one. This is why you have to have a strong one. Recommended Pokémon include:
- Hariyama with Counter and Dynamic Punch
- Terrakion with Double Kick and Sacred Sword
- Conkeldurr with Counter and Focus Blast
- Machamp with Counter and Dynamic Punch
- Lucario with Counter and Aura Sphere
If you don’t have these moves, try using TMs to switch them or at least use Charged TMs that fill up fast and are Fighting-type.

Giovanni begins battle with a Persian
His second Pokémon varies from person to person. It can be either a Nidoking, Kingler or Kingdra. You may have to fight him once to find out and then recoup. If he uses a Nidoking, try using a Mewtwo with Psychic and Psystrike or Psychic as its Charged Attack.
Should he use a Kingler, counter with a Raikou with Thunder Shock and Wild Charge or a Roserade with Bullet Seed and Leaf Storm. If the second Pokémon is Kingdra, you will need to use a Dialga with Dragon Breath and Draco Meteor. You can also try a Dragonite with Dragon Tail and Outrage.
Defeat Giovanni’s Shadow Pokémon
Finally, the third Pokémon will be whichever shadow Pokémon Giovanni has stolen in Pokémon GO spotlight hour. In the past, it has been Mewtwo, Registeel, Latios and more. Currently, it is Regice. To defeat the Shadow Regice, which will be very powerful, you will need to try the following:
- Terrakion with Double Kick and Sacred Sword
- Reshiram with Fire Fang and Fusion Flare
- Metagross with Bullet Punch and Meteor Mash
- Chandelure with Fire Spin and Overheat
- Lucario with Counter and Aura Sphere
- Conkeldurr with Counter and Focus Blast
Be sure to power these up and try to use three-star IV Pokémon or high health Pokémon if at all possible.
Tips for taking down Giovanni Pokémon GO
Giovanni is no walk in the park. The grunts are easy to take down and the Leaders put up a small fight, but Giovanni is tough. He very well may take you down a few times if you’re not perfectly equipped to take him down. That means having the right typing and right moves. When you begin the battle, tap furiously on the charged attack button.
This will save time from moving your finger down to the button when it’s time to hit it. It will also get in a move or two before your enemy begins attacking. Whenever you get a Charged Attack, use it immediately if he has any shields left. He is programmed to use a shield if he has it, even if he will die right after using the shield. Be sure to block his charged attacks when possible. Even if it’s not effective, it’s going to be strong enough to take a large chunk of your health. To put it simply, you really can’t tank any attacks from Giovanni.
When his Pokémon faints and he throws a new one in, there’s a significant delay between that and his first attack. Be sure to attack furiously in that time. If you get an extra Charged Attack, it may be wise to save it for the final Pokémon he has. When he gets to his new Pokémon, it’s a good idea to switch to the one prepared as a Giovanni Pokémon GO counter. If you start with a Hariyama and he brings in his Kingler next, you probably need to switch to your Raikou. This will also slow him down a bit as he won’t attack when you switch.
Once he has no shields left, you can use your Charged Attacks more strategically. When they’re full health, you should always use them. When they’re low, you may need to estimate if you can kill the Pokémon and save it for the next.
If you are struggling to defeat him, you can always change out Pokémon or simply power up the ones you’re using. If they’re dying just before you can get another attack or not lasting long enough to start, try powering them up. The health points they gain can make a major difference.
How to find Giovanni Pokémon GO
Giovanni doesn’t come around very often in Pokémon GO. Only when there’s a new Shadow Pokémon to save do trainers usually get the chance to fight him. This will prompt a Special Research. In it, trainers will have to eventually (on the second stage) take down all three Leaders. This will require, more or less, defeating 18 grunts and taking the mysterious components (make sure you have inventory space to get them). After defeating all three, you will get Giovanni’s Rocket Radar.
When you have that, be sure to pay attention to when the balloons fly in. If there’s a Team GO Rocket balloon and you have the Radar for him, it will have the boss in it. If he shows up at a Pokéstop, the odds are good that that is actually a decoy grunt. The balloon never fails, though. An ellipses will pop up as the text dialogue if the boss is there.
From there, you can proceed with the above information and attempt to take down the boss. When you defeat him, you will have the opportunity to catch the Legendary he used against you to rescue it. It can be shiny as long as there’s a shiny version already in the game.
