How to catch Ditto in Pokémon GO

Ditto is one of the rarest Pokémon in all of GO, so many trainers might be wondering how to catch Ditto Pokémon GO version. In normal console games, a Ditto transforms into a Pokémon, but when you encounter it, it transforms back. It may then transform into whatever you are using against it, but it does at least reveal itself as a Ditto right away. This is not the case in Pokémon GO, which makes it a lot more challenging to find one. Here’s how to do it, though.

How to catch Ditto Pokémon GO

Unfortunately, the Pokémon which can be a Ditto change and it’s a small list. There are only a few creatures that Ditto can transform to at a given time in Pokémon GO and without looking it up, you’d struggle to know which ones to target. Every once in a while, there’s an event which changes the spawns. Right now, based on the previous event, here are the Pokémon that can be Ditto:

  • Diglett
  • Grimer
  • Snubbull
  • Corphish
  • Starly
  • Roggenrola
  • Tympole
  • Litleo

Ultimately, the chance that one of these ends up a Ditto Pokemon GO is pretty rare Pokémon. They feature a one-in-50 chance, or 2%, of turning into Ditto. That’s pretty slim, which is why they are so difficult to find. During the events that they are featured, the rates do go up so it is much easier to find them. However, those events don’t last very long so take advantage of them when they come around.

Shiny Ditto in Pokémon GO

In terms of a shiny variant, Ditto does have one in Pokémon GO hacks. It’s one of the best off-color Pokémon in the entire game, to be truthful. The classic pink is replaced by a cool blue. There’s an important distinction between this shiny variant and a shiny of any other Pokémon, though: You won’t know until you catch it. Just like you won’t know if a Pokémon is a Ditto until the catch, you won’t know if it’s a shiny, either.

When the animation for Ditto pops up, pay close attention, because it will pop up on screen. If it’s blue, it’s the shiny. If it’s pink, it’s the normal. It won’t do the flashing that a shiny Pokémon often does.

Additionally, if you encounter any of the above Pokémon and they are shiny, they will not be a Ditto. A shiny Pokémon cannot transform into a Ditto, so rest assured that the shiny you found will remain as such. Shiny Dittos can only appear after they’ve been caught.

Tips on how to catch Ditto Pokémon GO

When you encounter any of the above listed Pokémon, it is advisable to catch them if you are looking for a Ditto. They are the only chance you have of finding one. When you encounter them, simply catch them as normal. Throw a Pokéball at them and use whatever berries you feel are necessary. It will catch as normal, though if a low CP or seemingly easy catch jumps out of the ball, it could be a Ditto.

Once you catch it, it will not say “Gotcha!” like it does for a regular Pokémon. Instead, it will read “Oh?” just as it does if you catch a Zorua. The transformation animation will begin there and you will see the Ditto appear on screen.

Furthermore, if a Pokémon transforms into a Ditto for you, it will be a Ditto for everyone else, too. Anyone you are playing with in the same area can catch the exact same Pokémon and it will transform for them, too. It could be shiny for one of you, but the odds of it being shiny for both are very slim.

Dittos can be powered up using the candy they have but they do not evolve. In battle, they will transform into whatever they are facing, so they’re not completely useless after catching them.
