How to get Espeon in Pokémon GO

Eevee has several evolutions in Pokémon GO. Its Psychic-type evolution is very popular, so trainers are likely wondering how to get Espeon in Pokémon GO. The Eevee Pokémon currently has eight evolutions that can be achieved and it’s very unlikely that any more come to the game. The first three, Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon, are usually random evolutions within Pokémon GO since they were the first ones in Generation I. The next five (Espeon, Umbreon, Glaceon, Leafeon and Sylveon) have to be done certain way. Here’s how to get Espeon in Pokémon GO.

How to get Espeon in Pokémon GO

Espeon can only be evolved to during the day. Several Pokémon across the generations have unique evolution tricks. Some of them have to have the device held a certain way, others have to battle in raids first and others have to be the buddy for catching several Pokémon. Espeon has several boxes that need to be checked first.

The first step is to make it your buddy Pokémon. Do this by clicking on your current buddy and scrolling to the bottom. There, you can click to swap buddies. It will ask you if you’re sure. Proceed from there and search for the Eevee you want to evolve. You may want to appraise some and see which one is the best. Furthermore, you may want a shiny Espeon. Eevee was the subject of a Community Day in 2021, so you may have one. This is what a shiny Espeon looks like.

Shiny Espeon trades the purple for a green hue

If this is the one you want, go ahead and select the shiny. If not, then select a regular one to be your buddy. After that, you will need to walk 10 kilometers (or a little over six miles). After five, it will grant you a candy, but that’s largely irrelevant to the evolution. This takes time, so it may be a little while until you get an Espeon. The next step is to evolve, though you do have to have 25 candies to do so.

If you do and you have walked the requisite amount, then there is just one stipulation: It has to be daytime. Normally, nighttime begins at 8 pm local time in Pokémon GO. As long as it is before that time, you can evolve and it will turn into an Espeon.

Name trick for Espeon in Pokémon GO

The first time you evolve to a certain Eevee evolution, you can use the name trick. Every single evolution has a name that triggers the evolution. For Espeon, this is Sakura. Name your Eevee that and it should allow you to evolve without having to go through any of the above struggles.

The rest of the Eeveelution names are:

  • Pyro – Flareon
  • Rainer – Vaporeon
  • Sparky – Jolteon
  • Kira – Sylveon
  • Tamao – Umbreon
  • Linnea – Leafeon
  • Rea – Glaceon

Unfortunately, this only works once. After it has been used, the names will do nothing and you will have to do the above guide. If you already have an Espeon, chances are the name trick has been used. To check, try naming the Eevee and if the evolution silhouette changes from a question mark to something, then that name is valid. If it stays a question mark, then you can’t use the name.
