Since Mewtwo is among the best and most popular Pokémon, many trainers may be wondering how to get Mewtwo in Pokémon GO. Mewtwo is arguably the most recognizable of The Pokémon Company’s creations. It is also among the most powerful and the best-looking. Therefore, many mobile trainers would love to add it to the Pokédex. Here’s how you can do that.
Mewtwo is a Legendary Pokémon, which means it is not always available. Unlike a Charmander which is theoretically available everywhere and at all times, Mewtwo comes in spurts. Legendary raids operate on a schedule. Right now, Tapu Fini is available, but that will change in a few days. After that, whatever replaces it will change eventually, too.
There’s no rhyme or reason to the Legendary schedule most of the time. This means there’s no telling when Mewtwo might return to the cycle. He was just in raids in last summer, so it could be a while. When it does, it will be the only five-star raid at the time. That is the main method of how to catch Mewtwo in Pokémon GO.
It is a pure Psychic type, which makes it weak to Bug, Ghost and Dark-type Pokémon. Get a ton of friends and fill your parties with those types. That will make it easier to defeat and give you a chance to catch it.
The shiny version of Mewtwo can come from raids
Shiny Mewto replaces the purple color with green. It is available and carries a 5% spawn chance in raid battles.
When it is in the raid schedule, there is an alternative way of encountering it. Whichever Legendary is in the schedule will also show up in GO Battle League rewards. Rank 20 unlocks all encounters for the Pokémon reward (usually the third victory), which includes the current Legendary. When Mewtwo is available, those at level 20 can theoretically encounter it.
It will be more difficult to catch without a premier ball, but it won’t flee after 20 unsuccessful throws, so there is an advantage to this method. As of now, only Azelf, Uxie and Mesprit can randomly spawn in the wild, so Mewtwo cannot be found unless it’s in raids.
Armored Mewtwo is an alternate form of the Pokémon that occasionally shows up in raids, but it is also very rare. It hasn’t been available for a while, so it could return before the regular one does. However, this is a totally different Pokémon, so it can’t change into normal form. Armored is also a unique form to Pokémon GO.
Shadow Mewtwo is also a possibility, but once again, that ship sailed recently. Giovani kidnaps a Legendary every once in a while and players are tasked with saving it. He has had Mewtwo, Latios, Regice, Registeel and more. This requires defeating all three Team Leaders (which requires defeating six grunts each) and he is very tough to take down.
Nevertheless, if he kidnaps the Legendary Pokémon again, trainers will have a shot at rescuing Shadow Mewtwo in Pokémon GO and adding it to their Pokédex.
As of now, Mega Mewtwo is not in Pokémon GO, so catching it through a Mega Raid is not possible.
