How to Mod Smash Ultimate
Before you get started modidng Smash Ultimate there’s a few things to keep in mind. You’re essentially using homebrew software on your Switch, something which can be tricky. You might want to do some research on using this software before you start with any mods. In the past certain homebrew methods have been known to get Switches bricked, although the current mods seem quite a bit safer. We’ll be going with the method from GameBanana, the primary source for Smash Ultimate mods.
Once you get mods installed, you can do a lot. Like adding Among Us characters to Smash. To start modding Smash Ultimate, you’ll need a few supplies. A MicroSD card is necessary, plus software Skyline and ARCopolis. Your first step is to start prepping the MicroSD.
You can do this by placing the atmosphere directory from ARCopolis onto your MicroSF card. Then, download the skyline zip and place that in the SD card too, in this location sd:/atmosphere/contents/01006A800016E000/. Then create a path to put your mods in at sd:/ultimate/mods/.
Once this is done, your next process is to add the mods you want to use. To do this download your choice of Smash mod. This part is the same for modding any game, even using the best SF 6 mods. Place the mods into the SD card in their own directory, uniquely named. Don’t put more than one mod in the same place.

Running Smash Mods
Once you’ve loaded up your mods, the next process is to actually run them. To do this you’ll need to launch Smash Ultimate while using custom firmware. Once in, you can enter the ARCopolis mod manager on the start-up of Smash Ultimate, then enable whichever mods you want active.
Modding Smash Ultimate will require some experience with homebrew software on Switch. While this was difficult with the platform’s first release, it has gotten much safer and easier in the time since. Stick with trusted software and you should be able to get your mods running. Although, obviously Smash esports tournaments won’t allow you to use these kinds of mods!
