Vainglory dev, SEMC partners with Netflix for upcoming game

The developer of the critically acclaimed mobile MOBA title Vainglory, Super Evil Megacorp (SEMC) has announced a partnership with Netflix. The dev will now be working with the subscriber-based media company in its ambitious plans for gaming on the platform.

SEMC and Netflix are working on a new game based on an upcoming release

SEMC is known for Vainglory and Catalyst Black, two picturesque mobile games, and they will now be bringing their talents to another platform – Netflix.

In an announcement, Netflix said that it’s working with SEMC on an exclusive game based on an upcoming release. This means that the game will be based on a completely new IP. The company hasn’t confirmed if this is a show or a movie either. Netflix has a plethora of upcoming releases so it’s difficult to ascertain what this might be.

In a separate statement, Kristian Segerstrale, the CEO of SEMC, offered a bit more insight into the partnership. He said that they have been working on this project for a “few months” now.

He further added that SEMC’s goal of creating “cross-platform” titles with “engaging combat, strategic depth, and highly social experience” hasn’t changed. Based on this, it looks like the upcoming SEMC x Netflix title could be an action game with a lot more depth.

This would be a refreshing change from other Netflix games which tend to be more casual.

Vainglory dev has a lot coming in the future

The past few years haven’t been the best for Super Evil Megacorp. Vainglory was a tremendous game, and it flourished initially with a big esports scene as well. Top organizations from around the world like TSM, Fnatic, and G2 Esports were all competing in the game at some time.

However, many called the ahead of its time due to its high system requirements which made it inaccessible to the mobile-first developing regions of Latin America, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. As a result, it struggled to capture audiences and grow its player base. SEMC tried many things to fix this such as a joystick control mode, the release of 5v5, and even cross-platform with PC but nothing succeeded.

Thus, the game was completely sacked in April 2020, and while the servers for the game are currently live, it hasn’t received a single update for about three years.

The dev’s next project after Vainglory was Catalyst Black. This was released in May 2022 after a long period of testing. The game also received positive reviews but hasn’t been able to be very successful.

Now, the dev has confirmed that they have a lot of exciting announcements coming. Segerstale said that “2023 is a big year” for the company and they have several more announcements coming up.

It’s unclear what these are exactly. The core fans of the dev still want SEMC to resume work on Vainglory. It’s unlikely that would happen, though.
