Basshunter – History & Lyrics for the iconic Dota anthem

Jonas Erik Altberg or Basshunter is a Swedish singer and songwriter, best known for being an incredible DJ and creator of the Dota 2 “anthem”. Although Basshunter released various albums and songs over his two-decade career, his most popular song about playing DotA titled, “Basshunter DotA” remains his most listened song at a whopping 69M views in 2023.

Vi sitter här i Venten och spelar lite Dota.

Those are the iconic chorus of the Basshunter DotA song that all old-school DotA players vibe to. It’s been seventeen years since Basshunter released the official music video that went viral not just on YouTube, but also in various European singles charts.

Basshunter Dota Lyrics – Swedish & English

Jonas recorded the lyrics in Swedish, and here’s a summarized translation of what the song truly is about. It’s a song about playing DotA (spoiler alert). More specifically, the chorus part of Basshunter DotA earlier, translates directly to: “We’re sitting here on vent and playing a little DotA.”

The other catchy lyrics are about the game progress, much like how a typical commentator would speak during a match. For instance, game and running around, pushing (lanes), owning the game, and toying with the opponents.

Additionally, there’s the occasional robotic voice giving English callouts and actual DotA hero voice lines.

Basshunter – Dota – Original Lyrics

[Intro] Vi sitter här i Venten och spelar lite DotA (I hear you, man)
Let’s get it on!
What’s happenin’!
D-D-D-D-DotA
What’s happenin’!

Why are Basshunter Dota lyrics so addictive?

Let’s be frank, for DotA fans, the Basshunter Dota lyrics are nostalgic. Its classic, electronic theme is also a major factor that makes it an addictive song for DotA fans. Or perhaps, we never had an official DotA song that Valve released, so this was the closest thing to having a meaningful candidate for an DotA official song.

Where is Basshunter today?

Basshunter himself is still an active artist, albeit he hasn’t been too involved in creating new songs about DotA.

However, he was recently featured in Netflix’s DOTA anime, the Dragon’s Blood, in a promotional video. In 2021, Netflix released a video, titled, Basshunter Dota Revival, where Jonas himself made an appearance. He sang the OG Dota anthem and played Dota 2 while the video teased scenes of the upcoming DOTA anime.

Basshunter DotA at TI Ceremony

Perhaps there’s just one more wish to cross off the bucket list. Valve has made it a tradition of the International championship to have opening ceremonies, featuring DotA-themed performances or popular artists.

While most TIs have incredible performances, none could plausibly rival the International 10 opening ceremony. That year, another iconic Dota 2 meme song was played: Darude ‘s Sandstorm.

Now that Sandstorm has made its way onto the TI Ceremony, the next big thing would be having Basshunter – DotA play at the International 12. However, we likely won’t keep our hopes too high since we did not get a featured artist performance at last year’s International. Nevertheless…Let’s get it on.
