Key torylines at BGMS 2023

One of the main storylines of the BGMS 2023 is that Global Esports has a chance at making history by defending its title. The Mumbai-based esports organization won the tournament last year in a surprising move with an underdog roster, edging out the fan favorites GodLike Esports.

The team is now fielding a different roster in 2023 but has been in sublime form. They placed third in the League Stage, after a dominant Week Two to directly book a slot in the Finals. Now, it remains to be seen if they can hold the pressure to become back-to-back champions.

Fan favorites Soul and GodLike Esports have been out as illness plagues the BGMS 2023

Ever since BGMI was re-launched last May in India, several third-party tournaments sprewed up. One thing was clear from these tournaments, the fan-favorite squads of Team Soul and GodLike Esports haven’t been able to keep up with some of the new entrants. However, what no one predicted was that neither of these teams could make it to the Grand Finals.

While GodLIke bowed out in the League Stage, Team Soul narrowly missed out on qualification in the Playoffs stage, placing 13th. Some of this can be blamed on an illness that plagued several teams in the BGMS 2023, with many players being admitted into hospitals including members from Team Soul and GodLike Esports.

Blind Esports might continue its domination in the BGMS 2023 despite the loss of Spower

Most of the third-party tournaments that were launched after the game returned were won by just one team: Blind Esports. Their performance was so dominating that GodLike Esports lured away their star player Spower.

However, the core of Blind Esports has stuck together and has continued its great performance in the BGMS 2023. After a mediocre Launch Week, they came back in Week 1 and 2 of the BGMS 2023 with a consistent and aggressive performance. They are now heading into the Grand Finals as one of the favorites.

History and Past Winners

BGMS was launched in 2022. So far, only one tournament has taken place.

At BGMS 2022, the top 24 teams from India were directly invited into the tournament. It happened from June 24 to July 17 with the teams competing for a share of the Rs. 15,000,000 prize pool.

It featured a three-week league stage where the 24 teams fought for the 16 slots in the finals. The finals happened from July 13 to 17, with Global Esports coming in first place.

Global Esports’ victory came as a surprise to all and can be termed as an underdog victory. This was because the team narrowly managed to qualify for the finals, having placed 16th in the league stage.

It was a close fight in the finals, with Global Esports, GodLike, Orangutan, and Team Forever vying for a shot at victory ahead of the final game. However, a third-place finish in the map by Global Esports coupled with 10 kills earned them the title of inaugural BGMS champions.
