If you’ve watch any of the previous PGL events throughout this year, such as PGL Cluj-Napoca and Bucharest, then you should already have a strong idea about what to expect here. The PGL Astana 2025 event kicks off with a Swiss format group stage, which has been a popular choice for PGL this year, even if other tournament organizers haven’t preferred it. Then, it’s a standard eight-team Playoff bracket in a sprint to the finish.
Group Stage (May 10th – 14th)
- 16 Team Swiss System Format
- All matches are best-of-three
- Top 8 teams proceed to Playoffs
Playoffs (May 16th – 18th)
- Single-Elimination bracket
- All matches (excl. Grand Final) are best-of-three
- Third-place decider match played to decide 3rd and 4th
- The Grand Final is best-of-five

Looking at the slate of teams attending PGL Astana 2025, there is one big favorite standing out among the rest: Team Spirit. Given the lack of Vitality, Falcons, and MOUZ, it looks like a clear runway for Team Spirit to get a second tournament win of 2025 under their belt after BLAST Bounty at the start of the year. Anything less than the top spot would be immensely disappointing for Team Spirit, especially as they head to the BLAST.tv Austin Major just after.
In terms of underdogs, The MongolZ and Aurora will also fancy themselves to get their first trophies of the year. These two teams have been kept on the fringes of the game’s pinnacle by the sheer quality of the top four rosters, but they can take great solace in the fact that beating Team Spirit at PGL Astana would likely mean a free run at the trophy. That’s a big ask, of course, but they seem the next best-placed to do it.
