Beastmaster Dota 2 Guide – Control Your Inner Beast in Patch 7.14

Beastmaster has an incredibly strong ability to pick off almost any hero in the game after farming some items. He has a very powerful aura spell for his team, and his main aim is to be help his team focus down one hero and increase their physical damage.

His summons provide his team with lots of vision and utility ranging from stuns and slows to nukes. He is very flexible in terms of which items are good pickups on him. This is because of his decent stats and ability to adapt to his teams needs.

Complete Beastmaster Spell guide

Wild Axes

Beastmaster throws his axes toward the target point, each axe striking all enemies in their path as they return to him and increasing the amount of damage they take from Beastmaster and his units for 10 seconds. This is usually maxed firstly because it helps you to burst down enemies very quickly, especially if you get a Helm of the Dominator or Necronomicon. You can also use it to break trees and deal some damage to enemies that are fleeing on low HP as it has very long range.

Since the axes chop down any trees they pass through, you can use them to destroy the trees in your lane to allow you to see incoming ganks. Because of this, they are very effective against heroes like Nature’s Prophet and Monkey King. When you initiate onto enemies with Primal Roar, make sure to use Wild Axes to increase the amount of damage that you can deal when following up.

Call of the Wild

Beastmaster summons a number of controllable units depending on the level of the spell. It can summon a Boar, a Hawk and another random neutral creep. The Hawk provides lots of vision around it at level 4 but can be killed quite easily. This spell essentially provides you with a moving ward with flying vision as well as a large amount of push potential and physical damage and it stacks very well with the increased attack speed from Inner Beast. However, the damage increase is not as much as what you receive from maxing Inner Beast before it, which results with this spell usually being maxed lastly.

You can use the Hawk to scout for incoming ganks in your lane as well as others, if you suspect the enemy to gank somewhere specific. You and your team can teleport to the Hawk with Boots of Travel which means that you can use it to gank enemies very easily, especially with heroes like Tinker. The slow from Boar makes it a very good way to prevent enemies from escaping, especially at level 4 and/or when paired with an Orb of Venom.

Inner Beast

Beastmaster increases the attack speed of all nearby allies. This increases the DPS of not only your allies but also of you and your Boars. It also makes Necronomicon a great pickup as their DPS will be higher than usual. This is maxed secondly because it gives your team as well as your units an edge in everything they do, whether that’s taking a tower, killing Roshan or just team-fighting. For this reason, it should always be prioritized after Call of the Wild.

Primal Roar

Beastmaster stuns the target enemy, pushing all enemies between you aside and slowing them whilst increasing Beastmaster and his units’ movement speed. This pierces Magic Immunity and is considered the strongest single-target stun in the game. With this ability you can focus down the best Dota 2 players with your Boars and Necronomicon. It has a relatively long cooldown, so make sure you don’t waste it. In the early and mid game, try to use it at every opening you get, although maybe not on supports. Note that you can use Primal Roar on couriers if you see a potential opportunity where you could kill it. You should focus on removing their carries or their initiators to give you an edge in team-fights.

Talents

Level 10: +30 Movement Speed or +25% XP Gain

The XP gain is quite nice as it helps you to get your Wild Axes maxed and get your other talents faster. There is an argument that could be made for the movement speed, especially if you re against fast enemies, but the XP gain is pretty much always a safe bet.

Level 15: +40 Boar Damage or +7 Armor

The increased Boar damage is very powerful, as it almost doubles its DPS. If you are against heroes with strong wave clear, or heroes that can otherwise kill your Boar very easily, then it may be better to get the extra armor as it may be more reliable. The armor may also be a better choice if you are facing heroes that can deal a lot of physical damage to you.

Level 20: +500 Health or +100 Wild Axes Damage

At the time point at which you are level 20, you are likely to be quite hard to kill, usually due to mobility items like Blink Dagger or Force staff and/or tanky items like Assault Cuirass or Solar Crest. For these reasons, you generally won’t need the extra HP. If you are taking a lot of damage in team-fights or if for whatever reason dying in fights, then the HP will probably be needed. The increased Wild Axes damage is quite significant as it affects each of your 2 axes, potentially increasing the amount of physical damage they can deal to 440 before reductions. If you don’t need to tank up, or if you are against illusion or creep heroes then you should probably get the extra damage.

Level 25: +2 Hawks or +40 Inner Beast Attack Speed

The increased attack speed will almost double the attack speed that Inner beast provide which is very significant for your allies in the late game. If you have lots of allies that can benefit from the increased attack speed, it is probably a strong choice. The extra Hawks will increase your map control and help you scout out more of the map in the late game which can be very helpful, especially when moving as a team or scouting Roshan. Be careful not to feed the extra hawks, as they have a bounty of 60 gold and 77 experience each.

What Items to build on Beastmaster

Starting Items

  • Stout Shield
  • Tango
  • Healing Salve
  • Clarity
  • Enchanted Mango

For an off lane Beastmaster, you will almost always want a Stout Shield in Dota 2 esports. Basic regen items such as Tangos and a Healing Salve are needed on you, and you can get either a Clarity or Enchanted Mango. The Mango will make sure that you will have burst mana regen equal to the amount that your ultimate costs, allowing you to use it when you would otherwise not have enough mana. In contrast, a Clarity will help to sustain your Call of the Wild summons and jungle a bit more easily through the presence of the Boars.

Early Game Items

Orb of Venom

If you’re able to get some farm out of your lane, you should consider an Orb of Venom. It stacks very well the slow from your Boar and when combined lets you easily chase down a hero without a mobility spell. If they have very mobile heroes, it might not be as useful.

Blight Stone

A Blight Stone is also a decent pickup in the laning phase. It makes all of the damage that you and your Boars deal hit a bit harder which is particularly useful when jungling.

Infused Raindrop

A Raindrop is a cheap answer to any mana issues you may be facing and will tank you up against magical damage.

Power Treads

Power Treads give you more strength and attack speed which is great for Beastmaster as he can make use of both. If you will be very active in the early or mid game, then you should get Power Treads instead of Travels, as they give you a bit more power in the early and mid game than BoTs do.

Phase Boots

Phase Boots are very strong on Beastmaster, as they help him to close the gap on his enemies after using Primal Roar to initiate. The extra physical damage stacks nicely with the damage amp from Wild Axes as well.

Tranquil Boots

If you’re taking a lot of damage in your lane, you may need Tranquil Boots. These will help you to have a presence in lane even through the excessive harass damage. In most games, you won’t need Tranquil’s and can opt for Power Treads or simple brown boots into Boots of Travel later.

Helm of the Dominator

A Helm will give you yet another attack speed aura which is good for all of your summons. It will also let you dominate a Creep, which works well because it adds to the number of summons you can have and your ability to solo kill enemies.

Medallion of Courage

A Medallion of Courage will increase the amount of physical damage that you and all of your summons deal to the target enemy. It will also provide some helpful mana regeneration.

Necronomicon 3

Necronomicon 3 is widely considered a core item on Beastmaster because of the immense solo kill potential that is gained from it. You should use it immediately after using Primal Roar on a vulnerable target to deal a large amount of physical damage and drain lots of mana from the target. Inner Beast works so well with Necronomicon because it increases the damage that the summons deal. If you are able to get a Necro 3 in the mid game, you will have a very strong ability to push, split-push and solo kill or pick-off solo targets.

Mid Game Items

Vladmir’s Offering

Vlad’s is another great item on Beast. It increases all the damage that your Necronomicon summons and Boars deal by 15%. The lifesteal will also help to sustain them as well as yourself. It’s also a good item for your team, especially if you’re fighting a lot in the mid game.

Blink Dagger

A Blink Dagger helps you to be more successful when trying to pick off a hero or initiating a team-fight. It makes it much easier for you to get close enough to get a Primal Roar off. If your team lacks much initiation, then a Blink Dagger will help.

Force Staff

If you find that you’re struggling to move around the battlefield, or if you nuked down quickly when focused by a target, then you can get a Force Staff. It will also help you to close the gap for your Primal Roar.

Shadow Blade

A Shadow Blade is another item you can use to initiate a fight or gank a hero. If possible, try to get the bonus damage off by attacking the target before using Primal Roar, but remember that the stun is the most important part, so if an enemy is running away from you and you’re in range, it’s often better to just Roar them from invisibility so you don’t risk them getting away. A shadow Blade is a great pickup if you will need a Silver Edge against some strong passive abilities. It may also be preferable to a Blink Dagger if you’re facing a carry with Radiance or some other hero that can easily trigger Blink Dagger, like Zeus or Venomancer.

Boots of Travel

Boots of Travel are generally the preferred boots of choice on Beastmaster. This is because they give you the ability to split-push very well with your Necronomicon, Boars and attack speed aura. You can also teleport to your Hawk which means you can join team-fights very easily, even if you’re on the other side of the map.

Solar Crest

A Solar Crest will increase your solo kill-potential by amplifying the damage that you and your summons deal to a target stunned by Primal Roar. When not used, it will tank you up with armor and evasion, which is great against lineups with lots of physical damage.

Pipe of Insight

A Pipe of Insight will passively tank you up and protect your team against magic damage. A Pipe is another great item that benefits your team and helps your team even more in team-fights.

Late Game Items

Shiva’s Guard

A Shiva’s Guard is a good item against illusion and creep heroes and when you need to tank up against physical damage.

Assault Cuirass

Assault Cuirass is another great item for Beastmaster that will help you climb Dota 2 ranks. It increases the DPS of you and your summons, as well as tanking them up a bit and making you an even stronger pusher. It’ a good choice when you need to tank up against physical damage.

Refresher Orb

Refresher Orb will allow you to cast Primal Roar twice in one fight. This is particularly powerful in the late game against very farmed carries. If you have a lot of items already and need more control, then you should consider a Refresher Orb.

Black King Bar

A Black King Bar will be needed in games where you are unable to contribute anything because of the amount of lockdown or magical damage on the enemy team.

Situational Items

Aghanim’s Scepter

An Aghanim’s Scepter can be a decent item, but is by no means core on Beastmaster. It reduces the cooldown to 45 seconds and increases the range from 600 to 950. This means that it can be a good choice in games where you’re facing split-pushers that are hard to lockdown or if you are fighting very often. In passive games where you team-fight once in a while, you won’t really need it, because the cooldown isn’t as important then and the range is easily subsidized by a mobility item like Blink Dagger or Force Staff. Even in the situation where it can be a good pickup, an item like a Scythe of Vyse might be better as it gives you more lockdown, and any mobility will make up for range. Overall, it’s not a particularly useful Agh’s upgrade.

Silver Edge

A Silver Edge is a good pickup against enemies with strong passive abilities. It also lets you gank and initiate fights more easily as you can sneak up while invis and get close enough to use Primal Roar.

Heaven’s Halberd

Heaven’s Halberd is a strong item against physical damage carries that deal a lot of damage to your team. With Primal Roar, you’ll be able to control the enemy carry very easily. Halberd will also tank you up through more strength and evasion.

Gem of True Sight

A Gem of True Sight is a good item against heroes with invisibility or if you want to control the map through ward vision. Having a Gem along with your ability to summon a Hawk will give you a massive amount of map control. It also gives you more reliable true-sight than Necronomicon which is a better choice against heroes with invisibility.

Bloodthorn

If you’re against heroes with evasion or that are hard to lockdown then a Bloodthorn can be a great item choice. It also causes the attacks to crit of your Boars and Necronomicon units.

Scythe of Vyse

If your team lacks enough lockdown against slippery heroes like Anti-Mage or Puck, then you may need a Scythe of Vyse. When combined with Primal Roar off, you’ll be able to keep a single-target locked down for a very long time.

Lotus Orb

Against lineups with lots of single-target debuffs and/or silences, a Lotus Orb can be a great choice. It will purge you of any silences or slows when activated and will reflect any single-target spells. This will let you stand on the front lines of a team-fight more easily and attack the target that has been Primal Roared more easily, for instance.

Linken’s Sphere

A Linken’s Sphere is a great item against single-target spells that are very powerful and aren’t blocked by Lotus Orb, such as Duel. You can also use it on allies as they will usually be a larger priority for your enemy.

Meteor Hammer

You can use a Meteor Hammer to help you push towers which you will be able to do very effectively with Inner beast and Call of the Wild. You can also use it after using Primal Roar to keep the enemy stunned for longer and allow your units to keep attacking for longer.

Aeon Disk

An Aeon Disk can be a good item if you are being initiated on in team-fights by spells like Flaming Lasso, or if you are facing lineups with lots of status effects.

Nullifier

A Nullifier can be a great item on Beastmaster against heroes with strong buffs like Ghost Shroud or heroes without innate escape spells. The mute and slow will allow you and your units to keep the target slowed for almost the full 5 seconds, as the enemy will be attacked frequently by all of you and wo’t be able to use items that could save them after you use Primal Roar, that is, if you do end up casting it. The extra armor will also help to tank you up a fair amount.

Interesting Beastmaster Match-ups

Heroes with strong channeling abilities

Heroes like Enigma and Bane will have a bad time against Primal Roar, provided you position yourself well in fights. You’ll be able to cancel their abilities even if they are magic immune. You may have trouble if they pick up a Glimmer Cape and don’t have true-sight, but otherwise you should be able to cancel their abilities in most situations.

Tinker

Tinker tends to hide in trees and can be easily killed when Roared. You can scout the trees with your Hawk and cut them down with Wild Axes. Watch out for a Linken’s Sphere, and if Tinker does get one, try to use the mana burn ability from your Necronomicon to trigger it before using Primal Roar. Be aware that his March of the Machines will kill your Hawk, so be careful about how you maneuver it.

Monkey King

Wild Axes will destroy a large area of trees which is great against MK. It’s often hard to see which exact tree he jumps to, but that’s not an issue when you have a spell like Wild Axes. This means that you can easily stun him for 4 seconds by very easily destroying his tree, during which time you can summon your Necronomicon units and kill him. The stun duration is actually as long as a level 3 Primal Roar.
