Broodmother Dota 2 Hero Guide for Patch 7.14

Broodmother is usually played in the mid lane, but can also be played very effectively in the off lane. Through her Spin Web ability, she is able to quickly and easily move between neutral camps and her chosen lane. This lets her farm faster than most other heroes in the game.

If she is able to build up a small army of Spiderlings, she can take towers very quickly and constantly be pressuring lanes whilst simultaneously farming jungle and ancient camps.

Complete Broodmother Spell guide

Spawn Spiderlings

Broodmother injects her enemies with Spiderlings which hatch from the enemy if they die within the next 2 seconds. This spell is prioritized after Spin Web as the Spiderlings really increase your ability to get things done in your game, be it farming or pushing. This spell can be used as a finisher against enemies with low HP or as a farming tool. In either case, it’s most effectively used just before the target dies, so as to spawn Spiderlings.

Spiderlings have two passive abilities that slightly slow enemies they attack and another that allows them to spawn Spiderites from targets that they have attacked in the last 2 seconds and that have subsequently died. These are weaker versions of Spiderlings, with a lesser gold and experience bounty. Note that these can also be spawned through denying your own creeps as well. You can use your spiders to do a great number of things, for example scouting runes, blocking or stacking camps and blocking enemies that are trying to escape from you. You should always try your best to avoid feeding your spiders, and this is best done through practicing microing units.

How to use it:

Spiderlings can be used to farm neutral camps, ancient camps, to push towers and to get kills in the early and mid game. You should try to always have a small army with you, so that you can threaten towers when your lane opponent leaves their lane or farm camps quicker and more easily. If your opponent has for whatever reason left the lane, you should take advantage of this and take their tower as fast as you can. If you have a small army, you can even send them to attack the tower without you or the creepwave and they will deal a massive amount of damage. When you have built up several Spiderlings and Spiderites, you can also use them to harass the enemy out of the lane, especially if they have no form of wave clear or other means of dealing with the spiders.

Spin Web

Broodmother places a web at the target location which provides increased move speed and health regen to Brood when she is stood in it. This is prioritized first because it allows you to move from camp to camp quicker and more easily and also get more farm. As they are able to cover more ground, you will find it easier to get pick offs and survive ganks. You’ll particularly want to focus on taking ancient camps when you get your first major item (Desolator or Radiance). This will help snowball your build and help you climb Dota 2 ranks.

After you have taken both towers in a lane, you can move to a different lane and begin to pressure that lane instead. This is usually only done if you are struggling to break high ground in the lane you are currently in, if there are still towers standing in other lanes or if your team is unable to push as 4 without you.

@ Valve

How to use it:

Place a web in your lane as soon as you can, before the match even starts so that you can cast a second one after the 40 second cooldown. Keep them near enough to one another so that you can move from one into next. This will let you move faster between camps and your lane. You should place them in such a way that enables you to farm nearby camps as well as ancient stacks while also being able to go into the lane to pressure the tower.  It’s important for your Spiderlings as they rely on the increased movement speed to not feed enemies. Spin Webs have the ability to destroy themselves at your command, which you should do whenever you need to move your webs around.

Incapacitating Bite

Broodmother’s attacks apply a movement speed slow and apply a miss chance to the target for 2 seconds. This allows Brood to stand her ground even against farmed carries, provided they don’t have true-strike. This is usually maxed lastly, because while it is a strong passive, it doesn’t allow you to do as much as the Spiderlings and webs do. The slow stacks with the slow from your Spiderlings, and in conjunction with an item like Radiance or Solar Crest, enemies will be missing so many attacks on you if they don’t have true-strike.

Insatiable Hunger

Broodmother gains bonus damage and a massive amount of lifesteal on her attacks for a short period. This is a strong spell to use when pushing towers or picking off a hero. With the massive amount of lifesteal it gives you, it will often be a better idea to stand and fight than it is to try to run away. You should ignore this until you have maxed your Spiderlings and webs for the same reason that your third spell is. That is, those 2 spells let you farm rapidly, give you a massive amount of map control and ability to pressure your opponents. You will still be able to get kills without your ultimate, and you’ll mostly want to farm, which your ultimate doesn’t help with as much.

Talents

Level 10: +200 Health or +75 Spawn Spiderlings Damage

Generally, the extra 60 Spiderlings damage is very underwhelming. This is because it doesn’t really help you farm any faster, and you rarely use it to get kills with, and when you do, an extra 75 damage isn’t very much. If you are very unlikely to die, the extra damage is almost equivalent to another skill point worth of damage in the spell and can help you to farm a bit faster. On the other hand, 200 health is a fair amount and will help you to survive ganks and team-fights more easily, especially when combined with the massive lifesteal from your ultimate. You may be able to live through fights you wouldn’t normally with the extra HP, and probably quite often at that.

Level 15: +35% XP Gain or 20% Cooldown Reduction

The cooldown reduction can be good if you intend to purchase several active items. The problem with it is that Broodmother usually buys passive items such as Radiance, Desolator and Assault Cuirass that make her a stronger pusher and this makes the cooldown reduction much less useful. Your spells have fairly low cooldowns anyway, so it mostly helps you to be able to use your ultimate, spawn Spiderlings a bit sooner, and recharges your Spin Webs which isn’t too important. In contrast, 35% XP Gain will help you to get your other skills maxed, and quickly adds up, especially given how much you farm as a core farmer and pusher.

Level 20: +50 Attack Speed or +20 Spiders Attack Damage

At level 20, extra Spiderling damage isn’t the most significant thing because they are usually quite easily farmed anyway, and they aren’t really used as a damage source in team-fights. Also, it can often be hard to reliably build up a large number of Spiderlings before you push a tower. For these reasons, the increased attack speed is usually a better option. It will let you live longer when your ultimate is active, as you’ll be able to lifesteal more, you’ll be able to tear through towers faster in general, and it will help you farm faster. If the enemy team doesn’t have much AoE damage then the extra Spider damage will help you to pressure and take towers much more quickly.

Level 25: +350 Spiders Health or +60 Insatiable Hunger Damage/Lifesteal

At level 25, Spiderlings are fairly easily farmed by most heroes, but the extra HP will bring the HP of Spiderlings and Spiderites up to 600 and 450 respectively With 50% magic resistance, it can be a decent choice if the enemy team has very little or not AoE damage or creep-clear, but in almost all other cases it’s more valuable to have more damage and lifesteal.

What Items to build on Broodmother

Starting Items

  • Tango (Shared)
  • Quelling Blade
  • Orb of Venom
  • Clarity
  • Healing Salve
  • Sentry Ward

Broodmother’s starting items are a little less conventional than other heroes. A Quelling Blade will help you to last hit with Broodmother’s low attack damage. An Orb of Venom will let you chase down enemies in the early game more easily and when stacked with the movement slow of the Spiderlings will slow a target by 20% whenever you attack them. A Clarity will let you cast Spawn Spiderlings more times and the same effect can be achieved with a Mango. You should be given 2 shared Tangos by your supports, and you will likely not need much more regen as your Webs will also heal you up. If you feel that you may be going to take a lot of harass, you can have a Healing Salve couriered to you. Of course, if you have one of the best hard support heroes in Dota 2 with you then you don’t have to worry about Healing Salve too much.

Early Game Items

Soul Ring

You will want a Soul Ring as your first item because it will provide you with enough mana regeneration to use Spawn Spiderlings often. You won’t need a Bottle because you get enough HP regen from your webs, and it doesn’t give you as much mana regeneration as the Soul Ring does.

Blight Stone

This can be built into a Medallion of Courage or a Desolator. It will slightly increase the DPS of your Spiderlings and of your hero. Usually it’s best to choose between a Orb of Venom or a Blight Stone as you don’t necessarily want to fill up your inventory slots and having both will delay your bigger items a bit.

Medallion of Courage

You can rush a Medallion to get it around 4 minutes. This will allow you to farm neutral and ancient camps faster, harass enemies out of lane and even help score you some kills in the early game. Medallion largely increases the amount of damage that you and your Spiderlings deal and can also be built into a Solar Crest later in the game.

Desolator

Desolator gives Broodmother a massive DPS increase and makes her a much better tower pusher. As a raw damage item, it will also make her lifesteal more health when her ultimate is activate. You should usually decide between a Desolator or a Radiance in the early game because they allow you to do different things.

Radiance

Radiance is a great item on Brood because it makes her much better at farming and pushing. You can farm it quite quickly and if you rush it after getting a Soul Ring, you should get it around 12-15 minutes. Having a Radiance this early will force enemies out of lane, and give you evasion against physical attacks.

Phase Boots

Phase Boots are generally the boots of choice on Broodmother because they let you move around the map more easily and also let you phase through your Spiderlings. You don’t necessarily need to get these first, or even at all, because the movement speed increase from webs is enough for a large part of the game. However, they are a decent pick up after a core item as you will be more likely to be able to kill people then and can make more use out of the increased movement speed.

Mid Game Items

Mask of Madness

A Mask of Madness is a good pickup on Brood because it makes her better at pushing towers, and the silence only prevents Brood from using Spawn Spiderlings. It goes very well with your ultimate it will let you lifesteal massive amounts of HP.

Black King Bar

In most games you will need a BKB on Broodmother. This is because you will otherwise most often find that you won’t be able to use your ultimate and just attack people.

Assault Cuirass

An Assault Cuirass is a great pickup on Brood for several reasons. It increases your DPS, tanks you and your Spiderlings up through armor, and makes you a stronger pusher.

Late Game Items

Manta Style

A Manta Style can be used to purge negative effects, dodge certain projectiles, increase your DPS and make you a stronger pusher.

Bloodthorn

A Bloodthorn is a good pickup against heroes that are hard to lockdown. It will also allow you to crit each of your attacks which is very strong when used with your ultimate as it provides you with bonus damage to crit. The slow from Incapacitating Bite will allow you to chase the target down after using Bloodthorn on them and means that, unlike most heroes, you won’t need an item to slow or stun them after using it.

Monkey King Bar

If you are facing lots of evasion, a Monkey King Bar will provide you with very high accuracy and give you a large increase to your DPS.

Butterfly

A butterfly will give you a large increase to your DPS and also allow you to use Flutter. The increased movement speed from Flutter will allow you to chase down heroes in fights and can be used to replace Boots in the late game if you need more slots.

Situational Items

Solar Crest

A Solar Crest will tank you up against physical attacks and also provide you with accuracy which is helpful against heroes with evasion.

Linken’s Sphere

Linken’s Sphere is a good item against heroes with strong items that can lock you down in your webs. It will give you a few more seconds to try to escape a gank which can be crucial.

Abyssal Blade

An Abyssal Blade will give you a powerful lockdown which is useful against farmed carries. This helps you take down even the hardest Dota 2 heroes. The bash is also very powerful in locking down heroes and it will also tank you up a bit.

Eye of Skadi

An Eye of Skadi is useful if you just need to tank up against their damage. It’s very strong against physical damage dealers as it will slow their attack speed. The movement speed slow is a bit wasted, given that Incapacitating Bite dose the same thing. They do stack however, which means that you will slow the attacked target by a lot.

Orchid Malevolance

An Orchid Malevolance isn’t a common pickup outside of building up for a Bloodthorn, but it can be gotten in the early to mid game if you can make good use of the silence.

Meteor Hammer

A Meteor Hammer can be a decent pick up on Broodmother as it helps her to take towers more easily. You can channel the Hammer from within the trees safely a have your Spiders push in the lane. The stats it provides are decent on Broodmother as well.

Aeon Disk

If you find yourself getting ganked and locked down by the enemy team, an Aeon Disk will help you to split-push and escape more easily.

Nullifier

If you are playing against heroes with buffs that make them harder to kill, then a Nullifier is a great item on Broodmoter. The slow will be triggered on each of the smaller spiders’ attacks.

Interesting Match-ups for Broodmother

Templar Assassin

You will be able to quickly tear through TA’s Refraction charges with your Spiderlings and she has no real way to lane against you well. You need to watch out for Psi Blades however, as she will be able to farm your Spiderlings very easily after she’s farmed a few items.

Axe

When Axe gets a Blink Dagger, he’ll be able to Blink onto you and your Spiderling army and use Berserker’s Call. He will be able to kill them all very easily and possibly even kill you, so try not to have your Spiderlings near you.

AoE damage

There are too many AoE damaging spells in the game to name, but most of them are able to kill your Spiderlings very easily. Special mentions go to Sand King, Tiny and Alchemist who all can very easily farm your Spiderlings.

Dazzle

If you amass a Spiderling army of at least 6 spiders and surround an enemy with them, Dazzle can use Shadow Wave to heal them and deal a almost 1000 physical damage to the enemy.
