Dragon Knight Dota 2 Guide – Scorch the Battlefield in Patch 7.14

Dragon knight is usually played in the mid lane and is very effective at pushing towers and soaking damage. Dragon Blood makes him very tanky against physical damage, particularly in the early and mid game. Elder Dragon Form also gives his regular attacks strong splash damage, which allows him to very effectively farm stacked ancients and clear illusion heroes.

With an initiation item such as Blink Dagger or Shadow Blade, he can initiate onto heroes with Dragon Tail which is a very strong single-target disable.

Complete Dragon Knight Spell guide

Breathe Fire

Dragon Knight breathes fire in a cone in the target direction, dealing damage and reducing the damage affected enemies deal. This spell is usually maxed first because it gives you a strong nuke and can be used to push creeps. In the laning phase, you should use this on your opponent to reduce the damage they deal so you can last-hit more easily. Breathe Fire can be taken at level 1 if you don’t expect to take much harass damage and think that you can contest last-hits.

Dragon Tail

Dragon Knight stuns the target with his shield in melee range and in Elder Dragon Form this spell’s range increases by 400. At level 1, this spell will stun the opponent for 2.5 seconds which makes it very worthwhile to have one point in it early, although it doesn’t scale very well. For this reason it should be maxed lastly. Having at least one point before or right after getting your ultimate allows you to use it as a ranged stun when in your dragon form. This can be taken at level 1 if you need the stun to get a kill when you’re contesting a bounty rune.

Dragon Blood

Dragon Knight gains armor and HP regen. This should be maxed alongside Breathe Fire as it makes it you much harder to kill in the early and mid game of Dota 2 esports. This is usually gotten at level 1 as it allows you to take a lot of harass from your lane. The HP regen from Dragon Blood makes you a good carrier for a Soul Ring and Armlet of Mordiggian.

Elder Dragon Form

Dragon Knight enters his Dragon Form, increasing his movement speed, allowing his regular attacks to be ranged and gaining bonuses to his attacks depending on the level of his ultimate. Each level gains a new bonus as well as retaining the previous ones. At level 1, it will give your attacks damage over time, which affects buildings as well. This means that you can push towers very easily at level 6 if your lane opponent leaves the lane. At level 2, your attacks gain splash damage, which applies the poison to all damaged enemies. This makes you very good at taking ancient stacks if your supports have stacked them for you. If not, you should begin stacking them yourself before level 12. At level 3, your attacks apply a movement and attack speed slow to all enemies affected by the splash damage.

Best Dragon Knight Talents

Level 10: -20% Breathe Fire Damage Reduction or +2 Mana regen

The Breathe Fire damage reduction will decrease the amount of damage that enemies deal with their regular attacks. This can be effective if you are playing against several melee physical damage dealers. This is because Breathe Fire will probably be too hard to use effectively against ranged heroes, as they tend to spread out more. The extra mana regeneration is generally very helpful across more situations. Most importantly, it will help you to cast Breathe Fire more often which in turn will help you to farm faster.

Level 15:  +300 Health or +35 Damage

If you are behind and need to tank up, then the extra HP can be quite helpful. It can also be good if you just need to tank up and soak a lot of damage. On the other hand the extra damage will help you to farm and take towers more quickly and deal more damage in team-fights. It’s especially good because of the splash attack that you gain from your Elder Dragon Form. In most games, the extra damage is a better option.

Level 20: 2x Dragon Blood Regen/Armor or +120 Gold/Min

The extra GPM will help you get more items for the late game. However, the extra regen and armor will tank you up a lot more. If you think you can end the game shortly, then then Dragon Blood will probably help you more, otherwise the extra GPM can help you to get items that tank you up as well.

Level 25: +40 Strength or +1.75s Dragon Tail Stun Duration

Generally, the extra strength is the better talent in most games. This is because it gives you lots more damage and 800 health which goes a very long way in tanking you up. The extra stun duration can be good if you need more lockdown on your team, which may be the case against heroes that are hard to lockdown, otherwise the strength is almost always a better choice.

What Items to build on Dragon Knight

Starting Items

  • Stout Shield
  • Quelling Blade
  • Iron Branch
  • Tango
  • Tango (Shared)
  • Healing Salve
  • Faerie Fire
  • Enchanted Mango

If you expect to take a lot of harass damage, you may need a Stout Shield, although you have very high armor so it may not be needed in every lane. A Quelling Blade helps DK with his relatively low attack damage, especially if you’re facing a hero with high damage. Buy as much health regen as you expect to take harass, but keep in mind that you have a lot of regen and high armor from Dragon Blood. You can get a Mango for more mana and HP regen as well, and build it into a Magic Wand later.

Early Game Items

Bottle

In the early game, you’ll need some sort of mana regeneration. If you expect to take a lot of harass in your lane then a Bottle along with your Dragon Blood should give you enough HP regen.

Soul Ring

A Soul Ring allows you to spam your Breathe Fire more often, allowing you to dominate your lane more easily and farm neutral camps very easily. The HP regen from Dragon Blood will restore the HP lost from using it. This is a solid strategy to winning early game and securing victories to rise in Dota 2 ranks.

Power Treads

Power Treads are usually boots of choice on Dragon Knight because they tank you up and give you more attack speed. You shouldn’t fight without your ultimate available and being able to tread switch allows you to use Breath Fire more efficiently.

Armlet of Mordiggian

In games where you will need to team-fight a lot in the mid game, an Armlet will increase your DPS and tank you up a lot with a relatively low cost. The HP drain from the active Armlet is somewhat mitigated by the regen from Dragon Blood.

Hand of Midas

A Hand of Midas can be a good item if you expect the game to last into the late game and if you’re getting lots of gold from your lane. Generally, it delays his other items that he needs to be strong in the early and mid game.

Drum of Endurance

A Drum of Endurance can be a good item if you need to fight in the early game. It will increase your movement and attack speed to help you avoid being kited and to chase enemies more easily.

Mid Game Items

Blink Dagger

Dragon Knight requires some form of initiation and chase which can be found in either a Blink Dagger or a Shadow Blade. In most games, a Blink Dagger will give you more mobility and is generally preferred.

Shadow Blade

If you can benefit from having a Silver Edge to break enemy passives, then a Silver Edge is likely to be a better mobility item over Blink Dagger.

Maelstrom

A Maelstrom will effectively give you even more splash damage in your dragon form, but most importantly it helps you to farm neutral camps and creep-waves. DK lacks any way to quickly farm other than to spam Breathe Fire which isn’t always sustainable. Generally, it’s best to get either an Armlet or a Maelstrom as they both increase your ability to fight and farm in the mid game.

Black King Bar

In almost every game you will need a BKB to help you avoid be kited by enemies or getting burst down by magical damage. It will also give you a fair amount of damage and HP. Might not instantly bump you to 10k MMR, but this item will ensure you climb steadily and don’t lose matchups you would otherwise lose.

Sange and Yasha

A Sange and Yasha is a relatively cheap item to build and will give you lot of stats in the mid game. This is a good pickup if you need to fight lots in the mid game or if you need to catch up through some cheap items.

Late Game Items

Assault Cuirass

An Assault Cuirass is a great item on DK because it tanks you up even more against physical damage and increases your DPS. The minus armor aura will make your splash damage deal more damage onto nearby enemies as well.

Daedalus

A Daedalus is a good late game item if you need more raw damage. The critical hits are applied to all enemies within the splash range of your ultimate, which makes it a great item against illusion heroes. Generally, a Daedalus is only gotten when you don’t need any other particularly item.

Monkey King Bar

An MKB will give you a lot of accuracy and lots of damage. You should pick this up if are against enemies with evasion or ones that may get evasion items such as Butterfly and if you need more damage.

Heart of Tarrasque

In some situations, you’ll just need to tank up against the enemy’s damage. A Heart will give you a massive chunk of HP, a massive amount of HP regen and some damage. The regen will allow you to siege the enemy’s high-ground for a long time, and you can have Armlet active a lot longer if you still have it.

Satanic

Satanic is another item that can tank you up a massive amount. The sustainability it provides in team-fights means that you will be able to go toe-in-toe against the enemy lineup much more easily and keep dishing out damage to the enemies.

Moon Shard

A Moon Shard should be consumed after you have gotten 6 items, as the attack speed it provides is an increase to your DPS.

Situational Items

Silver Edge

A Silver Edge should be gotten if you need the Break against strong passives. In this case, you should also get a Shadow Blade instead of a Blink Dagger.

Bloodthorn

A Bloodthorn is an alternative to Daedalus and MKB. It can be gotten if you can make good use of the silence and true-strike. The critical hits from the active will splash onto nearby enemies as well.

Linken’s Sphere

A Linken’s Sphere may be needed in games where you are facing very strong single-target spells.

Eye of Skadi

An Eye of Skadi will tank you up even more and increase your attack speed, armor and mana-pool. The movement and attack slow from Skadi stacks with the slows from your dragon form. Skadi can be a good item if you are facing several carries with lots of physical damage as it greatly reduces their DPS and allows them to be kited and chased very easily.

Heaven’s Halberd

Heaven’s Halberd tanks you up with more HP and evasion and can be used on enemies to disable their attacks.

Hood of Defiance

A Hood of Defiance can be gotten in the early-to-mid game to tank you up against magical damage and also give you some more HP regen. You can build this into a Pipe of Insight if no one else on your team will get one and you are facing lots of magical damage.

Mjollnir

A Mjollnir will increase your DPS and effectively increase the amount of splash damage you deal.

Hurricane Pike

A Hurricane Pike may be needed against melee heroes that can burst you down if they get close. Heroes like Lifestealer, Ursa and Troll Warlord can be kited by Hurricane Pike while you’re in your ultimate form very easily.

Nullifier

A Nullifier can be a good item against heroes with buffs that make them harder to kill. The stats it provides fits Dragon Knight very much and makes it much easier for you to kill heroes without getting kited by mobility items.
