Omniknight is an offlane hero with excellent defensive abilities which make him perfectly suited for this role:

  • He can heal himself and his allies using his Purification ability.
  • He can give himself and his allies spell immunity for up to 7 seconds, using his Repel ability.
  • He can make every allied unit in a 600 radius area around himself immune to physical damage for up to 8 seconds, using his Guardian Angel ability.
  • He can slow the attack and movement speed of his enemies by up to 34/34%, using his Degen Aura passive.

What Item to build on Omniknight

Omniknight’s item build should generally be designed to improve his mana pool, mana regeneration, mobility, durability and capacity to help teammates. Here are some of the most efficient items for this hero:

  • Stout Shield: gives you good protection in the early stages of the game.
  • Soul Ring: gives you 6 strength, good health regeneration and the ability to replenish your mana.
  • Magic Wand: gives you health regeneration, stats and the ability to instantly restore health and mana using its charges.
  • Quelling Blade: improves your ability to land last hits in the laning phase.
  • Arcane Boots: they greatly improve your mana pool and your ability to regenerate it.
  • Mekansm: gives you HP regeneration, armor, stats, and the ability to heal yourself and your teammates in key moments. Can and should be upgraded into Guardian Greaves.
  • Blink Dagger: gives you excellent mobility and a way to better position yourself during fights.
  • Crimson Guard: gives you armor, HP regeneration, stats and the ability to grant your teammates +2 armor and 60 physical damage block per hit for 12 seconds.
  • Shiva’s Guard: gives you 15 armor, 30 intelligence, and slows your enemies’ attack speed by 45. You can also use its active to deal 200 AoE magical damage and slow their movement speed by 40% for 4 seconds.
  • Pipe of Insight: this item gives you high HP regeneration, great survivability against magical damage and the ability to make your allies more survivable as well.
  • Force Staff: gives you 10 intelligence, +5 health regeneration and added mobility.
  • Heaven’s Halberd: gives you 20 strength, 25 attack damage (45 in total), 25% evasion and the ability to disarm enemy heroes.
  • Lotus Orb: this item is a good choice if your opponents have ways to silence and prevent your teammates from using their spells during fights. Furthermore, the armor, mana and regeneration you get from the item are all valuable.
  • Radiance: greatly boosts your offensive and farming potential, but it’s often better to build more defensive items such as the ones listed above.
  • Aghanim’s Scepter: increases the duration of Guardian Angel by 2 seconds and turns it into a global spell, which means that it affects allied units everywhere on the map.

Omniknight Abilities Explained

Purification

Allows you to heal an ally or yourself for 90/160/230/300 HP. At the same time, all enemy units around the affected target (260 radius) are damaged by the same amount. The damage type is pure.

Repel

Allows you to make yourself or an ally magic immune for 4/5/6/7 seconds.

Degen Aura

Slows attack and movement speed of nearby enemy heroes (300 radius) by 10/18/26/34 and 10%/18%/26%/34% respectively.

Guardian Angel

Makes allied units in a 600 radius around yourself immune to physical damage for 6/7/8 seconds.

This ability can be upgraded with an Aghanim’s Scepter, which turns Omniknight into one of the best hard supports in Dota 2.

The best talents for Omniknight

  • +75 Purification AoE (radius) / +90 gold per minute – The gpm talent is much more valuable.
  • +90 damage / +35% XP gain – The damage is generally more useful than the bonus experience gain.
  • +3 mana regeneration / +12% Degen Aura – The second option is almost always better.
  • +3s Repel duration / +200 Purification damage & heal – The first talent turns your Repel into a full Black King Bar (10s duration), while the second one greatly improves your Purification. Both are excellent, so it’s really a question of what you need more to succeed.

Skill build

When playing Omniknight, you generally start with a point in Purification followed by a point in Degen Aura and then another one in Purification. At level 7 your skill build should be 4-1-1-1. Afterwards you alternate between Repel and Degen Aura, putting points in your ultimate and taking talents whenever you can.

When to pick the hero

Omniknight is a great pick when facing a team with multiple melee cores that heavily rely on physical damage. He’s also a good choice if you want to be able to make an ally magic immune, both for offensive and defensive purposes. Tossing Repel on the best Dota 2 player in your team will win you games more often than not.
