Spectre Dota 2 Hero Guide – Haunt Your Prey in Patch 7.07d
Spectre is an agility carry hero with enormous mid to late game potential. Here are some of her most important strengths:
- She can damage enemies and slow their movement speed using her Spectral Dagger ability. This ability also gives her bonus movement speed and unobstructed movement, allowing her to phase through otherwise impassable terrain.
- She gains bonus pure damage when fighting enemies who are alone. The target also suffers from a 40%/50%/60%/70% vision reduction.
- She can disperse up to 22% of the damage she receives, making her enemies take it instead.
- She can instantly join her team during fights all over the map thanks to her Haunt ability, which allows her to create one haunting illusion for each enemy on the map and then swap places with any of these illusions during their duration (5/6/7 seconds).

What Items to build on Spectre
Being a hero that relies heavily on right click damage to farm, destroy buildings and kill enemies, Spectre depends on good items to have a significant impact on the game. Here are some of the most important items you should consider buying when playing this carry to grind Dota 2 ranks:
- Phase Boots: the added speed from this item’s active is excellent on any melee hero that needs to stay close to its targets, and the +24 bonus damage also synergizes well with Spectre’s abilities.
- Quelling Blade: this will improve your last hitting and your farming speed after the laning phase.
- Magic Wand: this is a good early game item on any hero.
- Urn of Shadows: if you don’t want to buy some other sustainability item and can be a part of a few kills, this item will be sufficient to restore your health during the first 15-20 minutes of the game.
- Vanguard: gives you excellent protection in the early stages of the game and synergizes very well with Spectre’s Dispersion ability.
- Ring of Aquila: this will provide good stats, damage, armor and the mana regeneration you need in the early game.
- Drum of Endurance: gives you excellent stats, attack speed and mobility.
- Manta Style: allows you to remove a lot of debuffs and confuse your enemies. It also gives a nice boost in multiple areas: movement speed, damage, attack speed and stats. This item is perfect on Spectre because the illusions inherit her Desolate ability.
- Diffusal Blade: helps you to slow down your enemies and synergizes well with Manta Style, giving your illusions mana burn and extra damage. The +20 agility is also an excellent bonus.
- Butterfly: gives you excellent survivability, damage, attack speed and mobility.
- Eye of Skadi: gives you great stats and the ability to slow your enemies’ attack and movement speed.
- Radiance: speeds up your farm and allows you to deal a lot more damage to the enemy team during your ultimate.
- Battle Fury: gives you excellent sustainability, damage and the ability to farm really fast thanks to its Cleave.

Spectre Abilities and how they work
Spectral Dagger
Draws a shadow path, which can be targeted at a specific enemy unit. This unit takes 50/100/150/200 damage and is slowed by 8%/12%/16%/20%. While traveling along the path, Spectre gains 8%/12%/16%/20% bonus movement speed and unobstructed movement. The effect lingers for 4 seconds after leaving the path.
The shadow path lasts for 12 seconds. All enemy units that touch it have their movement speed slowed for at least 4 seconds, even if they weren’t the primary targets. The primary target (if there was one) has its movement speed reduced for the entire shadow path duration.
Desolate
Allows you to passively deal 20/30/40/50 bonus pure damage to targets who don’t have any visible allied heroes nearby (325 radius). These targets also have their vision reduced by 40%/50%/60%/70%.

Dispersion
Reflects 10%/14%/18%/22% of all incoming damage, making your enemies take it instead. The closer an enemy is to you, to more damage it takes.
Haunt
Spawns one Spectre illusion next to each enemy hero on the map. This illusion follows and attacks its target, dealing 40% of Spectre’s damage and taking 200% damage in return. The illusions disappear when killed or after 5/6/7 seconds. During this time, Spectre can swap places any number of times she wants with any of her illusions. This ability is what makes Spectre so feared in competitive Dota 2 esports.
What Talents to Choose on Spectre
- +15 Desolate damage / +5 HP regeneration – If your HP regeneration is already good, take the Desolate damage. Otherwise the regeneration.
- -8s Spectral Dagger cooldown / +8 all stats – The first option is generally much better than the second, allowing you to permanently increase your movement speed in battle.
- +20% Spectral Dagger slow/bonus / +500 health – If you went for the Spectral Dagger talent at level 15, you should probably do so again, as the bonuses are enormous. Still, if you choose to go for this aggressive combo, make sure you compensate with some strength and HP giving items. Otherwise you may be very easy to kill by the enemy team.
- +8% Dispersion / +20 Haunt illusion damage – The first option is generally much better.
Optimal Skill build for Spectre
When playing Spectre, you should generally start with a point in Spectral Dagger and then go for a 4-1-1-1 build for the first 7 levels. Afterwards you can alternate between Desolate and Dispersion, putting points in your ultimate and taking talents whenever you can.
When to pick the hero
Spectre is a good pick whenever you have strong early game supports that can secure your farm in the laning phase. A Spectre lineup is very much like an Anti-Mage lineup. The biggest problem is surviving the early game and getting enough out of your lane, so that you do not to get too far behind. In the mid game, the challenge is to preserve your structures and map control, in order to be able to continue to farm effectively. If you get to the late game and the networth difference between the two teams isn’t too big, a Spectre lineup usually has a big advantage over the other team.
Spectre is often picked in lineups that use what’s known as the global strategy, usually in combination with a Zeus, an Invoker, a Spirit Breaker or a Nature’s Prophet.
Late Game Carry that always delivers
Spectre is a carry with great late game potential. She can usually do her own thing while her teammates create space and take objectives around the map. When fights occur, Spectre can instantly get involved simply by using Haunt. This alone makes her one of the hardest Dota 2 heroes to play against.
