Street Fighter 6 Gets First Major Esports Event at CEO 2023
The first Street Fighter 6 Major event is coming sooner than we expected, at CEO 2023. The fighting game tournament is the first to make the jump to the next-gen version of Street Fighter. This first Street Fighter 6 Major is going to be the inaugural test for the title on an esports level, but with some caveats about the format as it runs on the PS4.
CEO, or Community Effort Orlando, is one of the longer-running fighting game events. This year’s competition has a decent lineup of games, including x and x. However, this first Street Fighter 6 Major is definitely going to be a highlight. Although, some fans have doubts about the format and technicalities of the event.
First Street Fighter 6 Major at CEO 2023
CEO 2023 is going to be taking place over June, bringing together the major fighting game players for each of its featured games. Street Fighter has been a constant presence at these tournaments. The last iteration of CEO drew some criticism from Smash players for its prize pool. However, there’s good reason to think this year’s event will be an improvement. The 2023 version of the tournament is going to feature 12 games, but the Street Fighter offering is going to be a particular focus. This will be the first Street Fighter 6 Major, making the jump from Street Fighter 5.
The game has some limited bet as ran so far and already looks pretty polished for competitive-level play. This first major will be just days after the release though. This is going to be an early peak at what pros are doing with the game, and how the balance is on an esports level. If you’re planning on jumping in on release date, this tournament will show just how high the skill level can get.
Street Fighter 6 is going to be available at the tournament, Although, it’s going to be played on PS4s. This is a move that surprised some players.
Just recently, the Capcom Cup had been announced with tournaments on PCs. That’s a format a lot agree makes for a more stable tournament setup. Although, CEO isn’t the only tournament going with PS4s. Since the acquisition of EVO by Sony, that tournament is played exclusively on PlayStation consoles too.
No Hitboxxes and Controllers at CEO 2023
Being played on PS4 is a change, but it also means much stricter conditions on controllers that are available for players. Playing on PS4 will naturally limit the controller options. We might have the first Street Fighter 6 Major at CEO 2023, but hitboxx players are going to be out of luck. The choice of controller is controversial in most fighting games. This move for the Street Fighter tournament isn’t outright banning different controllers, but it’s making it much harder to use unconventional gamepads.
The move for CEO 2023 will bring the tournament in line with EVO, arguably the centerpoint of the fighting game community’s esports tournaments.
CEO 2023 looks set to be a fun event for all the games featured. As the first Street Fighter 6 major, it’s going to be particularly exciting for this franchise. While the platform news is disappointing for some, it might be a sign of things to come from competitive fighting in 2023.
