Alpha7’s PMGO 2024 dream ends in heartbreak as REJECT claim victory

After the first day of the PUBG Mobile Global Open (PMGO) 2024, there was one team that was the talk of the town. Playing at their home in Brazil in the first international tournament for the BR title in the South American country, Alpha7 topped the points table after a dominating performance on Day 1, in front of an electrifying crowd at the PMGO 2024 supporting them.

For everyone, this was it. Alpha7 has been the golden star of Brazilian PUBG Mobile esports, representing the country in almost all international tournaments. However, they have never won a trophy despite several third and fourth-place finishes at the Global Championship (PMGC) and World Invitational (PMWI). After Day 1 of the PMGO, it seemed like the team’s fortunes were turning. With three WWCD of the six matches, Alpha7 was a completely different beast in the lobby, finishing the day at the top of the points table, 20 points clear of the second-placed team.

From there, however, their momentum took a sharp turn downward, much to the dismay of the home fans.

Alpha7 (almost) clinches PUBG Mobile Global Open (PMGO) 2024 trophy

After starting very strong on Day 1, Alpha7 just had to maintain their consistency. The new PUBG Mobile esports points system makes it tough for one team to build a huge lead, but a 20-point head start is very impressive.

In the first match of the second day, Alpha7 started strong, with a third-place finish with eight kills, earning them 13 more points. However, they completely lost momentum from there. Alpha7 could only get 15 more points from the remaining five matches on the second day of the PMGO 2024. However, with their impressive first-day performance, the team only fell to second place in the overall standings, behind Japan’s REJECT, who took the lead with a consistent performance across both days.

A comeback on Day 3 fails to materialize

Alpha7’s players definitely went back on Day 2 to analyze what went wrong. Just one day earlier, they were the unmatched kings of the lobby but lost almost all of that momentum on the second day. PUBG Mobile is a brutal game, and sometimes luck isn’t in your favor. But, luck can’t give you a terrible performance across five games.

Maybe all the team needed was a little bit of time off to recoup ahead of the crucial Day 3. After all, major damage wasn’t done — they were still second on the points table.

Alpha7 started the first match of Day 3 off strong. A fourth-place finish with six kills put them just two points behind REJECT. From here, however, just like the previous day, the team wasn’t able to capitalize.

While they managed to pick up good kills in the next three games, it was REJECT’s back-to-back second-place finishes across three games that put them really far ahead of Alpha7. The team needed a miracle final two games while ensuring REJECT fell early in the games to have a chance at the trophy.

However, Alpha7 wasn’t able to pull it off and was rejected (pun intended) from lifting the PMGO 2024 trophy.

REJECT walks home as the champions of the PMGO

Amidst all the drama of the home crowd rallying behind their heroes, let’s not forget the rightful champions of the PMGO, Japan’s REJECT.

Japan isn’t considered a very strong region in PUBG Mobile esports, despite having one of the most structured esports ecosystems for the game with the PUBG Mobile Japan League (PMJL). This relegation-based league runs throughout the year and has been active since 2021.

As the inaugural and 2024 champion of the PMGO, REJECT will walk away with $100,000 and have also earned Japan an extra slot at the PUBG Mobile World Cup, which will happen at the Esports World Cup 2024 in Saudi Arabia.
